That Fabiana Palladino single is great - I think she and her brother have both served as touring bass players for Jessie Ware, but I wasn't aware she was releasing her own stuff.

― monotony,

Oh cool, I didn't know there was a Jessie Ware connection. The Spotify playlist gets off to a strong start with Shimmer next to Jessie's Overtime. When Sticky came on as the third song I immediately knew I was going to be in trouble having to narrow my long-list down.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 January 2019 04:48 (five years ago) link

Rocco was definitely playing for her in the Devotion days and I think Fabiana has more recently. Of course they're both descended from bass-playing royalty!

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2019 06:07 (five years ago) link

Voted for the first time! I will actually nominate stuff next year which is a warning more than anything else

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Monday, 14 January 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

I already voted (and I'm with Matt on preferring my ballot to reflect my actual year of listening) but dang that Raveena track is sweet! And the newer one, "Temptation," is the lead single from her debut album, per NPR.

rob, Monday, 14 January 2019 15:18 (five years ago) link

wow @ Raveena's "Honey"

Jeff W, Monday, 14 January 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

OK, have voted. As ever, the last few cuts were incredibly painful.

Jeff W, Monday, 14 January 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

Oh it was more than the last few surely, I didn't play too many but there were some rough times in there. Not boding too well

Talisto - Te Llamé ft. Diego Adrián & Ms Nina Woozy neoperreo reggaeton from Argentina via Stockholm

This is great!

daavid, Monday, 14 January 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

I'll just accept that there's no way to do an in-depth examination of the year when you've started checking stuff mainly in November. I'll be excited to discover everything that I have missed during the roll-out. Thanks to the team for the huge amount of work ! Hope you're all still having fun.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 12:24 (five years ago) link

Oof, I am really struggling with getting things into any order. Arrrrgh.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:27 (five years ago) link

You could do an unranked ballot!

zwei dunkel jungen (crüt), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:28 (five years ago) link

I have an irrational aversion to unranked ballots. Fine with half and half, but I always feel like there is a definite difference in how many points I want to give to things near the top and things near the bottom.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:56 (five years ago) link

i think mine will be halfsies with only two to five ranked this year

nxd, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

oh right I actually have to vote in this so I can maybe see 2/25 things place

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:59 (five years ago) link

my album ranking has been determined long in advance, with 'bolters' fitted in where appropriate (e.g. those aforementioned kyle gann or jean grae/quelle chris albums)

my singles ranking will be done but it's going to be an intense time. the last couple of days i've only be able to listen to a 2019 album, which hasn't helped. scary jokes campaign begins here

imago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

I always end up doing a top 7 or 8 or so ranked and the rest unranked. I feel like deciding whether a song is my 10th most liked or 15th most liked is pretty much impossible anyway. I guess ideally what I would like is some sort of tiered ballot (something like my top 5 ranked, then a group of 10 unranked followed by another group of 10 unranked with less points)

silverfish, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link

The Bill Wurtz track in the master list was erroneously nominated (by me) as Mount Saint Helens Is Going To Blow Up but actually Going should be About, I don't suppose this makes any difference to anyone but I feel it should be recorded here

imago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

most of yuz probably already voted or at least have your list-to-shorten good to go, but if you haven't heard it yet, Sloppy Jane's 'Mindy' is one of the wildest songs I've heard in a while. Ping-pongs between bratty and brooding, with an uncomfortable, paranoia-inducing guitar bubbling underneath the whole time. The album, Willow, has quite a few highlights on it, but this track's my fave. (and apparently the track came out in 2017, but, uh, year of impact? or something? idk it's on the album and nobody even nominated it last year).

Just a warning, the video borders on not safe for work/life (especially if your work has a moratorium on delightful John Ennis cameos), and definitely don't look up anything from their live shows from work. I had only heard the music and started looking them up on lunch break a few weeks ago and whoops nudity.

hokay, voted

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

Fabiano Palladino track is heavenly

thanks to whoever nominated

Number None, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

I did 10 ranked, 15 unranked for both ballots this year. Last year I was disheartened to albums that I liked a lot and put on the bottom of my ballot only get like 5 or 6 points. So now they'll get more.

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 20:56 (five years ago) link

just realized a couple days back that i never listened to the top 77 trax from last year -- i prob saw the number of good-but-not-great tunes in the top 10 and kept putting it off until i just forgot entirely. now that i've gone back and listened to it all i can happily say that as always there were plenty of gems that i wish i'd been able to discover organically thruout that year. several of the dance tracks especially, particularly those lower on the list. looking forward to what this year's poll brings!

dyl, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 07:11 (five years ago) link

Voted. Unweighted is a godsend.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link

Voted!

I just wanna campaign for this one because it's not on Spotify and too good to fall under the radar:

Sky Ferreira - Voices Carry (Demo)

daavid, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

There are 7 of the 9 songs from the robyn album nominated but the only one i like isn't. I think "ever again" knocks the rest out. Weird.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link

Robyn fans are terrible strategists.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:14 (five years ago) link

centrists are having issues everywhere it seems

anvil, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:19 (five years ago) link

Nego do Borel - Me Solta - hyperactive funk carioca. The video is divisive for a variety of reasons but the song bangs

Heard this while out in Rio a few weeks back and have become obsessed with it.

Though the funk track I heard absolutely everywhere was MC L Da Vinte & MC Gury's "Parado no Bailão". I kept turning to my BF and saying "hey it's the track played on coke bottles again."

Tim F, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

i feel that Robyn point even though I nominated a track myself. I think everyone has their favorite cut.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:02 (five years ago) link

Voted albums. See if I can't around to putting some tracks together.

here's that 2017 Top 177 btw... added a few tracks that were missing!

xps Added the Sky Ferreira track as a possible earlier after listening to the YouTube playlist.

Other favourite find so far is that fantastic Raveena track

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:11 (five years ago) link

the burna boy album is outstanding, i'm glad i got into it before i submitted my ballot

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

Yes, Burna rules. I hope people aren’t sleeping on Simmy’s Tugela Fairy album. Gorgeous South African house, produced by Sun-El Musician (who had his own very good - and nominated - album, but Simmy’s is even better imo). I feel fans of (We Are) KING will find a lot to love here too.

breastcrawl, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:21 (five years ago) link

Simmy's on my tracks ballot. Not heard the album

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:25 (five years ago) link

It’s pretty much perfect. So many great tracks, not a single weak one, and wonderfully sequenced.

breastcrawl, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

i didn't really pick up much from campaigning that wasn't already on my list but i for some reason ignored omar s "games that we play" this year and i really shouldn't have

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:42 (five years ago) link

anyway def voting tomorrow just gotta... figure out an order for my tracks list finally

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 21:43 (five years ago) link

I've got the flu, so spent a good part of this afternoon listening to tracks bigged up in this thread. There are now six or seven strong new contenders for inclusion in my votes. I struggled last year with new music discovery, having devoted most of my time to building my DJ boxes with old music, so this was most welcome.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 22:17 (five years ago) link

both the simmy and sun-el albums deserve space on your lists

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:32 (five years ago) link

the hasty cramming is the most fun part of this whole thing

budo jeru, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:35 (five years ago) link

Sun-el was my best discovery from last year's rollout, and the album was my summer soundtrack. The sun-el thread then led me to Simmy, whose tracks are proving damned difficult to whittle down right now (but I've got it down to three).

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:38 (five years ago) link

Damn, I guess I just figured someone (anyone?!) would've voted for the closest thing to a good New Order 2018 single - The Liminanas' "The Gift" (featuring Peter Hook!). Granted, it's not apex New Order, but definitely in the top end of "Waiting for the Siren's Call"-era New Order.

― Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Thursday, January 10, 2019 8:00 PM (six days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

the closest thing to a good new order single last year was krystal klear - neutron dance

^ brilliant record, in my ballot's top ten

budo jeru, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

this is the first year i've nominated, and will vote soon. also my first time campaigning !

so, what is my favorite* track (song) of the year ? it's called "trouble" by a band called grapetooth. goofy wonky synth-pop with beastie boys-esque shout vocals, almost like the B boys did a half-assed approximation of a "low"-era bowie track with shaggy but compelling results. the music video is also a real joy imo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OOpnSldGpU

*not really it's just tons of fun and i haven't heard anybody talk about it round these parts

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 January 2019 00:03 (five years ago) link

Don't know the band, but 'grapetooth' is a literal translation of the Chinese name for Spain.

xp

does it mean that spain is like a giant tooth full of grapes just dangling off the end of europe ? or is it more like Land of the Purple-Toothed Winos ?

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 January 2019 00:36 (five years ago) link

Sooo...due to uh "IT issues" I think we're going to extend the deadline by a week.
