ciderpress, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:02 (five years ago) link

did 20/20 instead of 25/25 this year because i'm lazy and didn't nominate some stuff

ciderpress, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:05 (five years ago) link

twin sister - top and bottoms

flopson, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:42 (five years ago) link

twin sis crew vote for that one ok?

flopson, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:42 (five years ago) link

assuming it was nominated..

flopson, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:43 (five years ago) link

It's probably too late to rep for anything now, but for what it's worth here are a few tracks I intend to throw votes at:

Raveena - Honey - Raveena is an Indian-American singer making soft, delicate, Strother-sister R&B and this is my pick of her numerous singles which I presume are leading into a longer project of some sort.

Georgia - Started Out - I had no cognisance of Georgia before this single but apparently she had a bit of a push, as "Georgia Barnes", a few years ago as a Kate Tempest-type on Domino records. Anyway she's using a mononym now and is instead mining the "wonky underwater Kylie" aesthetic of Tove Lo's "disco tits".

Brame & Hamo - Roy Keane - this was my pick of songs I'd not previously heard from the Mixmag list. It's basically just the Keane Brothers' version of Dancing In The Moonlight with a donk on it. Lots of fun and certainly less hackneyed than Toploader.

Delta Goodrem - Think About You - A lusty single with sound design that at once reminds me of Selena Gomez' Revival and parts of the last Kelela record (no, really), with one of my favourite dumb couplets of the year: "In a crowded bar, or a restaurant/Everybody doesn't know that you've got nothing on".

monotony, Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:00 (five years ago) link

that one wasn't nominated xp

ciderpress, Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:08 (five years ago) link

i just voted for the album instead

ciderpress, Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:08 (five years ago) link

yeah i voted for jaipur

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:27 (five years ago) link

"Echo Arms" because it is not on the Mr Twin Sister album and then I can not feel guilty for voting for both, please

boxedjoy, Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:36 (five years ago) link

Jaipur for me (but album also).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:47 (five years ago) link

Gutted I forgot to nominate Ought's 'Disgraced in America':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN4MEzle8Hs

Instead will vote extra hard for the album, as I recommend you all to do. Post-punk w/ a singer who echoes Scott Walker what is not to like I dare ask you.

Most beautiful song of last year was Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore's extended take on the Child ballad Fair Annie: https://threelobed.bandcamp.com/track/fair-annie

seandalai, Monday, 14 January 2019 00:34 (five years ago) link

that raveena track is very beautiful

dyl, Monday, 14 January 2019 00:46 (five years ago) link

It can be the 2nd-most beautiful

seandalai, Monday, 14 January 2019 01:21 (five years ago) link

that Baird/Lattimore is excellent, thank you!

sleeve, Monday, 14 January 2019 01:28 (five years ago) link

that raveena track is very beautiful

― dyl

Yeah, that was one of my favourites when I went through the playlist.

I also fell in love with:

Fabiana Palladino - Shimmer
Musya Totibadze - Останусь с тобой
Rina Sawayama - Cherry
Faye Webster - Kingston
Le SuperHomard - Paper Girl
Claire Laffut - Verite
Vendredi sur Mer - Ecoute Cherie
Tessa Violet – Crush

These were all new discoveries for me that might get my vote. Also realised I'd totally been sleeping on the new Dumblonde song and the Lindstrøm/Ronika collaboration. No idea how I'm going to get my tracks list down to 25!

kitchen person, Monday, 14 January 2019 01:54 (five years ago) link

ooh those are great picks monotony, thanks for sharing - "Honey" is especially great. never would have expected delta to come out with a single that sounds like kelela also

ufo, Monday, 14 January 2019 02:30 (five years ago) link

"Power of Two" must be the best non-album Mr Twin Sister track, no?

ƒ©˙∆˚¬ (Whitey on the Moon), Monday, 14 January 2019 03:25 (five years ago) link

tessa violet's schtick and subsequent singles are instantly stale but dang if "crush" didn't hit a sweet spot for me

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 14 January 2019 03:56 (five years ago) link

xxp nor did I, but it was one of the year's most pleasant surprises. There's a remix by Initial Talk that really accentuates its Mariah-in-the-90s-isms that's kinda fun too.

That Fabiana Palladino single is great - I think she and her brother have both served as touring bass players for Jessie Ware, but I wasn't aware she was releasing her own stuff.

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2019 04:04 (five years ago) link

Pulse Emitter - Xenharmonic Passages
https://pulseemitter.bandcamp.com/album/xenharmonic-passages
exotic tunings, big synth-wizard bells tolling outward towards infinity - listen to "chateau, night"

― monotony,

Oh cool, I didn't know there was a Jessie Ware connection. The Spotify playlist gets off to a strong start with Shimmer next to Jessie's Overtime. When Sticky came on as the third song I immediately knew I was going to be in trouble having to narrow my long-list down.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 January 2019 04:48 (five years ago) link

Rocco was definitely playing for her in the Devotion days and I think Fabiana has more recently. Of course they're both descended from bass-playing royalty!

monotony, Monday, 14 January 2019 06:07 (five years ago) link

Voted for the first time! I will actually nominate stuff next year which is a warning more than anything else

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Monday, 14 January 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

I already voted (and I'm with Matt on preferring my ballot to reflect my actual year of listening) but dang that Raveena track is sweet! And the newer one, "Temptation," is the lead single from her debut album, per NPR.

rob, Monday, 14 January 2019 15:18 (five years ago) link

wow @ Raveena's "Honey"

Jeff W, Monday, 14 January 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link

OK, have voted. As ever, the last few cuts were incredibly painful.

Jeff W, Monday, 14 January 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

Oh it was more than the last few surely, I didn't play too many but there were some rough times in there. Not boding too well

Talisto - Te Llamé ft. Diego Adrián & Ms Nina Woozy neoperreo reggaeton from Argentina via Stockholm

This is great!

daavid, Monday, 14 January 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

I'll just accept that there's no way to do an in-depth examination of the year when you've started checking stuff mainly in November. I'll be excited to discover everything that I have missed during the roll-out. Thanks to the team for the huge amount of work ! Hope you're all still having fun.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 12:24 (five years ago) link

Oof, I am really struggling with getting things into any order. Arrrrgh.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:27 (five years ago) link

You could do an unranked ballot!

zwei dunkel jungen (crüt), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:28 (five years ago) link

I have an irrational aversion to unranked ballots. Fine with half and half, but I always feel like there is a definite difference in how many points I want to give to things near the top and things near the bottom.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:56 (five years ago) link

i think mine will be halfsies with only two to five ranked this year

nxd, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

oh right I actually have to vote in this so I can maybe see 2/25 things place

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 14:59 (five years ago) link

my album ranking has been determined long in advance, with 'bolters' fitted in where appropriate (e.g. those aforementioned kyle gann or jean grae/quelle chris albums)

my singles ranking will be done but it's going to be an intense time. the last couple of days i've only be able to listen to a 2019 album, which hasn't helped. scary jokes campaign begins here

imago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

I always end up doing a top 7 or 8 or so ranked and the rest unranked. I feel like deciding whether a song is my 10th most liked or 15th most liked is pretty much impossible anyway. I guess ideally what I would like is some sort of tiered ballot (something like my top 5 ranked, then a group of 10 unranked followed by another group of 10 unranked with less points)

silverfish, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link

The Bill Wurtz track in the master list was erroneously nominated (by me) as Mount Saint Helens Is Going To Blow Up but actually Going should be About, I don't suppose this makes any difference to anyone but I feel it should be recorded here

imago, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

most of yuz probably already voted or at least have your list-to-shorten good to go, but if you haven't heard it yet, Sloppy Jane's 'Mindy' is one of the wildest songs I've heard in a while. Ping-pongs between bratty and brooding, with an uncomfortable, paranoia-inducing guitar bubbling underneath the whole time. The album, Willow, has quite a few highlights on it, but this track's my fave. (and apparently the track came out in 2017, but, uh, year of impact? or something? idk it's on the album and nobody even nominated it last year).

Just a warning, the video borders on not safe for work/life (especially if your work has a moratorium on delightful John Ennis cameos), and definitely don't look up anything from their live shows from work. I had only heard the music and started looking them up on lunch break a few weeks ago and whoops nudity.

suggest boban (Will M.), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:36 (five years ago) link

hokay, voted

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

Fabiano Palladino track is heavenly

thanks to whoever nominated

Number None, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

I did 10 ranked, 15 unranked for both ballots this year. Last year I was disheartened to albums that I liked a lot and put on the bottom of my ballot only get like 5 or 6 points. So now they'll get more.

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 20:56 (five years ago) link

just realized a couple days back that i never listened to the top 77 trax from last year -- i prob saw the number of good-but-not-great tunes in the top 10 and kept putting it off until i just forgot entirely. now that i've gone back and listened to it all i can happily say that as always there were plenty of gems that i wish i'd been able to discover organically thruout that year. several of the dance tracks especially, particularly those lower on the list. looking forward to what this year's poll brings!

dyl, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 07:11 (five years ago) link

Voted. Unweighted is a godsend.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link

Voted!

I just wanna campaign for this one because it's not on Spotify and too good to fall under the radar:

Sky Ferreira - Voices Carry (Demo)

daavid, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

There are 7 of the 9 songs from the robyn album nominated but the only one i like isn't. I think "ever again" knocks the rest out. Weird.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link
