...Ryan Schreiber said that? Um I think he's wrong and also missing the point (unless he means voice in the figurative sense)

Final entry in this list:

xps I’m pretty sure he was talking about his literal voice

harvey wall/barrier (voodoo chili), Saturday, 12 January 2019 22:18 (five years ago) link

my objection comes from that dumbass gq editor’s letter where he asserts that frank will be remembered as the best of his time (this was after he said that writing about music and writing about fashion were the same thing)

maura, Sunday, 13 January 2019 00:14 (five years ago) link

Is this the new guy?

rip van wanko, Sunday, 13 January 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

yep

maura, Sunday, 13 January 2019 02:24 (five years ago) link

There's Frank Ocean, of course. (I think history will exalt Frank Ocean. By which I mean: One day he'll be known as the best, most boundary-shattering and timeless artist of his generation. Duh.)

Number None, Sunday, 13 January 2019 11:13 (five years ago) link

he’s not the best by any means but he’s more important than being “the best”

otm -- like Saul Bellow

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 January 2019 14:01 (five years ago) link

the older the get the more i hate this monomaniacal fixation on who "the best" is. i don't want to go "late capitalism" about it necessarily, but increasingly it seems like if you're not the absolute best in the world at something the general attitude is that you might as well not bother. i say embrace imperfection! it's more interesting. if every album was fucking "dark side of the moon" music wouldn't be worth listening to.

Sigur Ros or Pomplamoose type shit (rushomancy), Sunday, 13 January 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

dark side of the moon is very, very far from perfect

imago, Sunday, 13 January 2019 15:55 (five years ago) link

Both otm, but it's broader than music.

Sure, Rolling Stonish rankings like the best 100 albums or top 10 guitar solos ever!!!! Has always just been to generate disagreement and therefore attention. Why was this ranked so high, it's criminal that they neglected that, lather, rinse, repeat.

In art generally, in life generally, and in work generally, the pressure to be excellent (or else don't bother) is a stifling force that would kill loads of happy sloppy accidents that upholster the world with lovable bits of mediocrity.

Gunther Gleiben (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 13 January 2019 15:55 (five years ago) link

maybe dark side of the moon is perfect, and that's why i don't like it much

imago, Sunday, 13 January 2019 15:59 (five years ago) link

Dark Side of the Moon is boring dreck

Οὖτις, Sunday, 13 January 2019 16:01 (five years ago) link

I was just about to post something like that but wussed out, thanks Οὖτις!

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 13 January 2019 16:02 (five years ago) link

Rushomancy otm, just the idea of ranking stuff anymore I can't really be bothered

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 13 January 2019 16:13 (five years ago) link

on a related point i think the indie ppl loving lofi aesthetics and 'imperfection' more generally were onto something and the criticisms of them were basic and thoughtless (esp when they used some notion fetishism)

ogmor, Sunday, 13 January 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

This is not an opinion I share - I spotted it on Twitter - but MAN does it belong in this thread.

increasingly it seems like if you're not the absolute best in the world at something the general attitude is that you might as well not bother.

Nah, it’s just a music nerd thing. AFAIK, actual musicians (most, anyway) don’t think that way; they just do their thing because they love it and are driven to do it, as artists.

i stan corrected (morrisp), Sunday, 13 January 2019 18:11 (five years ago) link

(I think most interesting musicians seem to be fairly self-effacing in interviews, actually. Most, not all...)

i stan corrected (morrisp), Sunday, 13 January 2019 18:13 (five years ago) link

I like overusing superlatives like “the best” because I seek to make my life as close to a series of breathtakingly beautiful experiences as I possibly can

lmao at that emo paragraph

Gunther Gleiben (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 13 January 2019 20:19 (five years ago) link

dark side of the moon is surprisingly enjoyable

sarahell, Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:18 (five years ago) link

Dark Side of the Moon would've been improved with Bernard Sumner writing the lyrics imo

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

I don’t know any of the lyrics on Dark Side Of The Moon, unless “I have become.............. comfortably numb” is one, but that feels probable

sans lep (sic), Sunday, 13 January 2019 21:23 (five years ago) link

xp - possibly so! It came on the radio the other day, and I thought to myself, "this is kinda okay, actually."

Having a “Berenstain Bears” moment, looking at the Wikipedia page for this album and learning that it is apparently titled The Dark Side of the Moon

"Money" is the best song on the album

^^^ My actual apparently controversial opinion.

Locked in silent monologue, in silent scream (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 January 2019 23:51 (five years ago) link

Lyrical contributions by Bernard Sumner would not have improved it.

^^^ another bold stance on this iconoclastic evening

I'm gonna throw in this possibly controversial opinion:

The Dark Side of the Moon is not one of the top 5 Pink Floyd albums

silverfish, Monday, 14 January 2019 01:57 (five years ago) link

The Division Bell is way better than I remembered, that’s for sure

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 14 January 2019 02:11 (five years ago) link

The Division Bell is also not one of the top 5 Pink Floyd albums

silverfish, Monday, 14 January 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

I'll bite - what are the top five?????

timellison, Monday, 14 January 2019 03:13 (five years ago) link

Money is awesome wtf

brimstead, Monday, 14 January 2019 03:16 (five years ago) link

This is a quality control. Also wrong.
