Listening vs Hearing

Just discovered this wonderful thread, but I can't contain my curiosity (I suspect I've heard a lot of Imagine Dragons without realizing it and I need to go find out), so this is farewell.

(shit, turns out that I legit had never heard any imagine dragons songs before, but it's too late now)

from the Spin article:

The word “thunder” appears nearly 75 times in their song of the same name.

Thunder! Feel the thunder! STOMP STOMP STOMP! literally music for ages 6-12

rip van wanko, Friday, 11 January 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

Except surely ages 6-12 have made it about farting, so small point for the youth of America

macropuente (map), Friday, 11 January 2019 16:51 (five years ago) link

if a kid could perfectly fart those three stomps, i would be impressed

I have not heard this band and will steadfastly hold that post

Has humanity ever listened to so much music against its volition? Imagine Dragons in the gym. Imagine Dragons at the mall. Imagine Dragons in three out of five movie trailers before the feature presentation, which also features a song by Imagine Dragons. Imagine Dragons at every public sporting event held inside every arena or arena-shaped thing. Imagine Dragons in television commercials for computers and video games and Jeep Cherokees. When the devil met Imagine Dragons at the crossroads back in 2012, he found a way to take all of our souls. He promised to play “Radioactive” in every Uber.

Imagine Imagine Dragons - where people who have never heard Imagine Dragons (like me) describe what they think they might sound like

very disappointed that my idea for a thread already exists, but with a worse name

For the record I think they might be a cross between Styx and Brokencyde, with classic 80s fighting fantasy cover artwork.

this band is very popular and actually well-liked by those who listen to them. i understand that it is unbelievable to these writer folx that anyone could actually like this band (really, i get it, they truly are terrible) but idk why this narrative, that such an act is in reality broadly hated and can only have reached broad exposure thru sheer force on the part of record companies, still gets traction. it wasn't true for creed. it wasn't true for nickelback. it won't be true for the next one.

I guess this is growing up

flappy bird, Saturday, 12 January 2019 03:20 (five years ago) link

its sort of impressive the way they manage to incorporate every single terrible pop rock trend from this decade - mumford-esque twee folk pop, really clunky dubstep integration, terrible sing-rapping, etc

ufo, Saturday, 12 January 2019 03:55 (five years ago) link

and they're from Vegas!

flappy bird, Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:05 (five years ago) link

The one good thing I will say about Imagine Dragons is that the lead singer has been an activist for LGBTQ youth within the Mormon church.
