Maybe the one your thinking of was the Gandhi ceremony that had Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, and Walter Matthau?

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:49 (five years ago) link

sounds like it! i thought Chevy Chase was involved in one. I remember him starting with "Good evening, Hollywood phonies."

Liza as host THIS year would be unimaginably entertaining. Or, just unimaginable.

Chevy did the Last Emperor one.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

man, Chevy hosted solo in '88! I definitely don't recall that. xp

also, Whoopi Goldberg's ran over FOUR hours. And seemed longer.

Those ceremonies had a talent for length, like Prince.

The Chevy-Goldie-Paul Hogan one I was thinking of. Def didn't realize Robert Shaw parlayed playing Captain Quint into a co-hosting role.

That's a crazy ratings drop from 2014 to 2018.

jmm, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

One that I think you can find across the board with network TV shows.

Although, maybe not ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_television_ratings

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 21:13 (five years ago) link

they really couldn't find a funny hollywood-adjacent person to host the show? very weird.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 23:54 (five years ago) link

as someone pointed out, Jim Carrey was by far the funniest person on the GGs

too unpredictable though, and more a TV guy now

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 January 2019 01:20 (five years ago) link

after his run as an ensemble player on a TV show c. 1990-93, he did 27 movies, then did one TV lead in 2018. not sure he's fully outweighed the last 25 years by doing a show that 166,000 people watched.

Green Book has gone, in three days, from recrudescent Oscar frontrunner to the movie written by the guy who tweeted at Trump about personally witnessing Muslims dancing in the street on 9/11, directed by the guy fond of flashing his penis to co-workers as a "joke." I'm fully entertained.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Thursday, 10 January 2019 01:48 (five years ago) link

This is the Trump era where everything up is down, so its momentum might be unstoppable now.

Chris L, Thursday, 10 January 2019 03:36 (five years ago) link

directed by the man who made Bill Murray's hair a wonder in Kingpin.

carrey is mainly a twitter guy now

between the announcers and the different presenters for every award, all the oscar host gets to do is waste time.

i thought glenn close was overdoing it at the GGs, but i looked it up and she's never won a movie globe or an oscar before.

absolutely, if this had actually been planned and written on purpose, it would be a great idea

have missed any and all recent Green Book eruptions

Hosts seemed to have had the shit kicked out of them online by everyone so you can see why it’s a poisoned chalice. Ellen was by far the best this last 10 years or so, does she not want it this time? Haven’t been keeping up with all the hoo-ha.

piscesx, Thursday, 10 January 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link

The only ones I've truly liked in the last 25 years have been Steve Martin and Whoopi (just the first time)

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Thursday, 10 January 2019 16:07 (five years ago) link

Though the answer to "How Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody Became This Year’s Oscar Villains" is "they won the top two Golden Globes."

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link

Here is who I would like to see host The 2019 Oscars Awards:

Whoopy Goldburg, Marky Mark Wallburg, Steve Guttenburg, Steve Carrel, Michael J. Fox, Cardi B, Michael B. Jordan, regular Michael Jordan, Kate Micucci and Aubrey Plaza, John Cho and Kal Penn, Cindy Williams and Hologram Penny Marshall, Hologram Penny Marshall and Hologram Jerry Van Dyke, John Stewart and Steven Colbert and an otter, just an otter by itself, Gabriel Iglesias, Elle Fanning, Steve Aoki, chainsmoking Sean Penn connected to an I.V. that is never acknowledged or explained, Willow Smith carrying Jada Pinkett Smith on his shoulders, Hologram Patricia Schneider (ex-wife of Rob Schneider), a roomba with an otter on it, Drake and Judy Dench, Billy Bush and Fellicia Rashad, Zöe Kravitz, Billy Crystel, Martin Shorts, Will Shortz and Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Lisa Desjardin and Yamiche Alcindor, Manuel Lin-Maranda, Amy Schumer riding inside of a comically large roomba, Charles Barkley, Kirk Douglas, Patti LeBelle, Skrillax, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Dwight Yoackam, Lizz Winstead, Ron Funchs, Peter O'Toole, Paula Poundstone, Jair Bolsonaro, Seth Myers.

if Hawke and Schrader are dissed I can skip the show w/ enthusiasm

Did anyone predict Roma for supporting actress? If so, bravo

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:33 (five years ago) link

Nope.

Morbs, you can get enthused. Schrader did get in, though.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:42 (five years ago) link

Fat Viggo and Fat Bale over Hawke is pretty bad.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:45 (five years ago) link

Hawke not being nominated invalidates the entire thing for me.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link

Richard E Grant! Can You Ever Forgive Me? totally passed me by, anyone seen it?

piscesx, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:49 (five years ago) link

Hasn't been released in the UK yet

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:52 (five years ago) link

Good for Driver, Schrader and the Coens (sneaking in to the Adapted Screenplay category on a technicality), though. Also, "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings" for Best Song made me smile (though I prefer "Surly Joe").

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:53 (five years ago) link

xp ah that explains it.

piscesx, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:55 (five years ago) link

First Reformed getting its only nomination in one of its least deserving categories is classic Oscars.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:58 (five years ago) link

Still, Spike Lee gets his first directing nomination and for a brief moment, I'm fine saying that's all that matters in the Oscar world.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 13:59 (five years ago) link

'Best Director' never makes any sense; some years the actual Best Film doesn't even get a Best Director nom, i still don't know how the F that works.

piscesx, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:01 (five years ago) link

Bright spots:
- Lee gets director
- 2 foreign films in director/cinematography
- HALE CO. in doc feature!
- Terence Blanchard in score
- foreign slate is about as good as it gets, given this is the Oscars

Toughest to swallow:
- Hawke/Washington both axed
- Vice gets all the key nods it needs to win
- First Man not in score

― piscesx, Tuesday, January 22, 2019 9:01 AM

nah, it's easy: for the Academy, you can make one of the year's five to ten best movies without necessarily standing out as a director. It shouldn't ever totally line up, even in critics awards.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:04 (five years ago) link

Is it really Cooper vs. Bale? I had no idea Bale had any strength other than inevitability behind the nomination.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:05 (five years ago) link

- HALE CO. in doc feature!

Actually, RBG aside, doc feature's about as good as that category gets too.

Reform the actors branch!

The Favourite - 10
ROMA - 10
A Star Is Born - 8
Vice - 8
Black Panther - 7
BlacKkKlansman - 6
Bohemian Rhapsody - 5
Green Book - 5
Ballad of Buster Scruggs - 4
First Man - 4
Mary Poppins Returns - 4

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:10 (five years ago) link

The only best picture nominees with the directing/editing/screenplay/acting nominations quadfecta are VICE, THE FAVOURITE and BLACKKKLANSMAN.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY missed screenplay and director.
ROMA missed editing.
BLACK PANTHER missed acting.
A STAR IS BORN and GREEN BOOK missed directing (biggest silver lining of the morning).

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:14 (five years ago) link

I guess I'm on Team Favourite.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 14:17 (five years ago) link

I'd say I listed those three in descending order of win likelihood. Though at this point I'm predicting ROMA to win.

Hawke is so up his own arse these days on the born-artiste tip, hard to root for him
