Self-driving robot dog cars

latebloomer, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 03:30 (five years ago) link

self-driving cars because when they're more prevalent they will run over people and man is that gonna fuck up the suspension

I predict self-driving cars will be set loose on the world in large numbers with inadequate safety features. I don't imagine robotic delivery dogs will do one hundredth of the harm the cars will do. Plus the robotic dogs will be given a pleasant woof and ingratiating manners. Children will want to pet them. Vandals will want to torture them. They will be welcome everywhere, until they are so prevalent underfoot that they're more common than cockroaches and we hate ourselves for inventing them, to the point where we cheer like maniacs when self-driving cars begin to plow into the faux-canine hordes and flatten them like tin cans.

i guess i'm lame but i want all this to work

i want electronic self-driving vehicles, powered by solar electricity, to deliver dumb shit to people. and because people are so fucking lazy and terrible that they need things delivered to their front door (or preferably, their mouth - just deliver the food goods directly to the mouth), they want another thing to transport their goods the last mile20 fucking feet, i want the electronic dog to work too

i hope self-driving cars are the only cars, and that they kill 10,000 people a year in the united states. that would be a vast improvement over the 30,000 fatalities and 2.2 million injuries caused by humans driving cars.

i don't give a fuck if dumbshits like elon musk get rich in the process.

if any of you have ever had a friend killed in an accident maybe you sympathize

but all of this is sad because we listened to good music in a car during coming of age road trips with friend as a teenager

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 05:21 (five years ago) link

i'm responding to the hypothetical person who skims self-driving vehicle news for any news of failure, not anyone in this thread btw

i just think it's fucking insane that we transport ourselves around at 70+ mph, killing ourselves and many other people who had no choice in the matter, and see it as a god given right. i would much rather let rich assholes win this one and save millions of lives in the process

"back in the day we used to do donuts in the parking lots of wendy's!" vs "blegh, i'm a little kid that's fucking DEAD because of this nonsense"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 05:27 (five years ago) link

seriously, ROOT for self-driving vehicles that are safe. all your dumb shit x 100000000 does not equal a single human life that will be saved by self-driving vehicles

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 05:28 (five years ago) link

tbh driving is a terrible thing that I would never do if I didn't have to

I have a deep disdain for robotic things that try to charm people so I voted dogs. There's a spot near where I work where you can be served coffee by a robotic arm that waves goodbye to you at the end of the transaction. Most people think it's cute but all I can see is the cynical manipulation of a company whose endgoal involves putting baristas out of a job.

yeah. of course. but the track record of capitalism makes it more likely that the first 10 or 15 years of self-driving cars won't do much better than to approximate the safety record of human drivers, if that, while the grief caused by deaths via software and sensor malfunctions is not likely to feel any better than that caused by deaths via human driver error. maybe worse. mass transit is already much safer than cars but gets no respect, because the profits to be had are so much less.

Yes and yes. And also I've been hit by a car while riding in a bike lane. Feel like robot cars might be able to avoid doing shit like that, maybe.

those that were in vehicles that day, they met a fate I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. those that stayed inside, well, we survived only to begin a new horror. by day, it's ok to move around - hell, you can even ride a bicycle. at night, you lay low, when the remaining self-driving cars have recharged. at that point in time, do not be on anything with wheels. at least if you're on foot, you can dive out of the way. Brian, well...he thought he was safe on his Schwinn. We....I can't talk of Brian right now, it still hits too hard.
