that's good enough for me, the original katamari games are some of my favorites and there hasn't been a good way to play them in a while

katamari is a top ten all time game for me and i look forward to confusing the hell out of my partner with it

I love the confusing premise and the discrepancy between the problem and the solution in regards to the narrative.

eShop deals in NA http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/treat_yourself_to_a_bargain_or_two_with_the_nintendo_new_years_sale_in_north_america
30% off MK8D, Arms, and Splatoon 2 are as cheap as these games will be in their digital version for probably ever. Mario+Rabbits w/ DLC under $30.

Basically if you have a new Switch for Xmas but no Mario Kart yet, and you're doing all digital, buy Mario Kart now because the base price is never gonna drop and it will probably not be discounted again for 9 months or so.

anyone ever bought from any of the foreign stores ? tempted to pick up splatoon at the price it's on the south africa store
― there are no good podcasts (||||||||), Thursday, 3 January 2019 22:56 (five years ago) link
never tried it, i think it gets attached to your account for that region so you have to change accounts/regions every time you want to play though? not sure about that
feels like bad form to do it for indie games but for full price stuff go at yr own risk
― ciderpress, Friday, 4 January 2019 00:07 (five years ago) link
I don’t think that’s true re switching ?
everything I’ve read says there’s no downside, except slight difficulty in paying

the gaming forum leak crew is getting rowdy again. a Nintendo Direct seems likely next week. I say it every time but Nintendo Direct is just the most amazing marketing tool and I lose my mind over it every time.

Katamari (which I'd never heard of) looks like a trip (in lots of ways), but it's kind of crazy to me that it's being sold for $30 when something like Gris or even Guacamelee is half that.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 January 2019 12:21 (five years ago) link
The prices for Switch games seem crazy.
I can pick up lots of old classics for the PS4 for £10-£15 but all the Swtich games seem to stay North of £40.
Even something like the Harry Potter Lego games which is £15 on PS4 and Xbox is selling for twice that on the Switch
― groovypanda, Monday, 7 January 2019 12:31 (five years ago) link
a) carts are more expensive than discs and b) Nintendo keeps their first party games full price which sets different expectations for the market on their platforms
― ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 13:28 (five years ago) link
also katamari came out like three weeks ago and is not an indie game
― na (NA), Monday, 7 January 2019 15:27 (five years ago) link
it came out like 12 years ago actually imo
― ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link
but yeah that's a Classic Game so they can charge whatever they want for it and people will buy it
― ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link
I still haven't used our switch as a portable (aside from on the couch a couple of times) but I'll pay a modest switch premium just for its being always on, ie no loading time when you turn it on. the ps4 is bad for that & I'll frequently opt to play switch (or a moronic iOS game) just to avoid the tedious ps4 loading. it really should be nothing since ps4 loading is like what, a minute? but still.
xp yes I will buy katamari for whatever, duh
― L'assie (Euler), Monday, 7 January 2019 15:31 (five years ago) link
Katamari is I think about £15-16 in the uk? Exactly what it should be imo (first time the original game's ever been released here so it's a massive treat to finally be able to play it without importing).

If Katamari was $100 it would still be worth it. It looks cute and adorable, but it also makes you want to play each level over and over to improve your scores and etc. Plus, best game soundtrack of all time

I want to pick up a new game at a physical store (the experience!). Any recommendations?
I could just keep getting established Nintendo IP titles because they're reliable but on the other hand I've been hopelessly addicted to Binding of Isaac and kind of want to get hip to another less obvious choice. I'm somewhat well informed about the landscape of games but I want to know what everyone likes the most (those of you here that seem to consume a good variety of titles).
For example:
- I've played the legendary GBC Shantae but how do you like the new one?- Is Cave Story really good?- I'm not usually gravitating to JRPGs or game-that-this-less-cartoony-character-from-Smash-is-from titles but does anything stand out considerably?- Are the newer Mega Man games in those collections providing any incentive to buy or should I just stick to the classics on my Classic Minis- I like the idea of Wild Guns but I've just been so awful at the original on emulator...
I am both aware and horribly out of the loop at the same time.

josh in chi you gotta get katamari. it's a classic game

cave story is great! it's on the shorter side, but during the 10 or so hours you play you'll have a good ol' time
(might be more like 15 or 20 or 8, it's been a while since i played it)

― Nhex, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:53 (five years ago) link
new shantae is just okay, the better one is pirates curse which is on the eshop and still isn't really a classic or anything, just a solid retro platformer
cave story is good, i haven't tried it again in the wake of the millions of indie sidescrollers it spawned but i suspect it still holds up fine
i dunno what other gameplay genres you like, all the good platformers on switch are first party Nintendo games or indie eshop games which don't fit your going to the store to buy something criteria
― ciderpress, Monday, 7 January 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link
could buy Tropical Freeze at the store

I think Link to the Past or Zelda series in general is my ideal game type to address that comment.
I love the randomization aspect to Binding of Isaac and the format so I'm pretty hooked on it. Once you get to know that game it is a deep dive and the thrill of seeing what a seed gives you this time is the key to the addiction. Platformers are great (but TBH I'm just not terribly good at them though I do try) and I'm always attracted to a stand out title.
Love Trop Freeze! I hit a wall (see above) but will eventually try to come back to it.
Turn based RPGs are great and I love the world building but I'm no good at them in general and/or I'm overwhelmed by the fight mechanics. FF6 and Chrono Trigger were kicking my ass on recent attempts and I figured I'm just not as schooled in it. I would usually co-pilot those type of games so the pressure wasn't really on me.
