and for a volvo ffs

more ham for me myself and i (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 10 January 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

i couldn't finish the whole thing but what was the problem with it exactly? that it's tacky he wrote a story about his brother's suicide for an auto blog and kinda pegged it to the car he drove around? the narrative itself is... fine.

Mordy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

did he get to keep it?

...yes?

in this story about this writer’s brother there is one (1) picture of them both and five (5) pictures of the car as well as numerous paragraphs about what a smooth, enjoyable ride the volvo provided as he made his emotional pilgrimage around to places in ireland of great personal sentimental value

look i know we all love seeing ads everywhere for everything all the time now but this one just left a bad taste in my mouth for some reason 🤷‍♂️

For the world at large, this is the only experience they’ll ever have with him. There’s a weight on me, then, to make it something real.

YOU WROTE ADVERTORIAL ABOUT YOUR DEAD BROTHER FFS

more ham for me myself and i (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 10 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

he's an intern for gawker for cars and needed some car related peg obv to write about his brother - if the writing hadn't felt so sincere i'd hold it more against him but i feel like he did the bare minimum to get published (the "i drove a volvo" line was so perfunctory). i guess i'm just sympathetic :/ he's obv an aspiring writer who misses his brother.

Mordy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:43 (five years ago) link

to his credit, he doesn't delve into a thought exercise about what his brother would have thought about the car

mh, Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:46 (five years ago) link

Editors shouldn’t let this happen.

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:47 (five years ago) link

this is a particularly over the top example of a kind of article jalopnik has been running for like 10 years

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:50 (five years ago) link

at least it was his own brother, his family ... considering how many writers, artists, etc. appropriate other people's personal tragedies or use them to write tone deaf think pieces ... it may be tacky, but assumedly, it's not hurting anyone.

sarahell, Friday, 11 January 2019 02:22 (five years ago) link

compared to the NYT magazine feature story last month about Max Harris' veganism and care for animals that kinda handwaved his lack of care for the guests at his event, where 36 people died ... "volvo gave me a car to drive around Ireland and write about my dead brother" seems kinda sweet

I was wondering wtf was wrong with you all until I hit the line at the end about how they've taken out a lot of the words and phots about the car.

I don't understand plagiarizing and I especially don't understand pointedly plagiarizing like that ^^^. It's trumpian in the absurdity.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:15 (five years ago) link

yeah, as per the plagiarized: "imagine taking the time to re-type and plagiarize this dumbass tweet"

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:35 (five years ago) link

it fucks me up because there are people on twitter who plagiarize constantly but they at least have the foresight to rephrase a little bit

mh, Thursday, 17 January 2019 01:29 (five years ago) link

The relaunched gawker is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 17 January 2019 02:52 (five years ago) link

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 17 January 2019 02:53 (five years ago) link

The original tweet was super cringey, but to like it enough to plagiarize? Oooof.

Kosoff additionally told HR of an exchange in which Griffith took a dismissive stance towards the recruiting of a writer who identifies as non-binary.

Kosoff, who was tasked with recruiting some new editorial staff, wrote in a Slack message that she was going to meet with a potential staffer “who is a person of color and nonbinary (uses they/them pronouns).”

When she returned from the meeting two hours later, Griffith initially laughed off the preferred pronouns.

“lol is [name redacted] a girl?” Griffith asked.

wow, just a straight up evil person, i hope she eats shit forever

walking away from presumably lucrative gigs like this in the current media economy takes guts, so props to them

I was looking up Griffith last week on instagram, twitter and her articles. I couldn't figure out how she landed this job besides her mingling in the monied prep Trump crowd.

Yerac, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 16:36 (five years ago) link

at the same time, they a) took jobs from someone widely known to be a shithead and b) eventually realised, one presumes, that being associated long-term with his shitty project could affect their future job prospects xp

I mean there's clearly different calculus at work when you have a byline etc, but idk there are plenty of shitty, toxic outlets with one or two writers worth reading (the NYT for example)
