The best Simpsons episode ever. Fact.

funny thing about the rakes is that when I watched Cape Fear I kept looking for a rake scene, which I assumed they were parodying (say DeNiro/Mitchum steps on one and doesn't flinc). To the best of my recollection, there wasn't one.

That's because, thank god, it gets cut during syndication. You've seen it once, that's enough.

The thing about the rampant cynicism in later Simpsons is that while the jokes evoke laughter at first, they don't hold up upon repeated viewings, an important factor considering its syndication. The worst is when the jokes get old as they're being told. After the humor's worn off, all you have left is the maliciousness for the sake of being malicious. A viewer will close him/herself off to avoid identifying closely with the victim and perpetrator. You have the exact opposite when there's warmth in the telling.

Leee is otm. I think that's why I can't really enjoy the Simpsons like I used to. The one where Homer ran the daycare was the worst, because it made him look like he really didn't give a damn about his kids. In the past no matter what stupid or horrible thing Homer did you knew he cared about his family.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Put my vote with Leee and Nicole too. Dysfuctional isn't the same as heartless. Roseanne fell the wayside much the same way too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mmm. Looking back on the first season it's interesting to see not only how straightforward the show was (was there *anything* like the first-real-episode bit where Bart and Homer played catch for about a full minute to the backing of sappy music and some gentle chat ever again in the show?), but how, well, slow. It's a show that seems to have sped up and disengaged at the same time. In that sense it's reflective of its media surroundings, I suppose.

This thread is a cruel reminder of how I would like the Simpsons Season 2 dvd (probably another reason the earlier seasons don't get rerun in the States, Fox is trying to flog the dvds).

I just realized that Eminem himself could be IN THIS ROOM going off about me at 180 mph and I really wouldn't care. Is there any empty threat thread?

(Not being mean to Nicole, who I heart, as should we all, etc.)

You just say that because you know he scares you and you can't admit to yourself.

Or maybe I should have said I will come after you with a tube of Kim's silver purple lipstick.

I like the blush he has on in that picture, it looks like Nars (Nars, Nas does not have his own makeup line...yet).

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

He actually looks more like Pee Wee Herman's twisted twin loveslave the more I think about it, given the blush.

Nars?

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't give me that. I don't go around expecting people to know the meaning of the reference to the cats of Queen Beruthiel in the Moria chapters in Fellowship of the Ring, do I? Er, wait.

I can't agree with the cruel Simpsons = inferior Simpsons claim and think that even in the past couple of years there've been episodes with great stretches in 'em. (The one where Moe winds up going back to school, for example, generally sucked, but the first five minutes or so where Bart was digging a hole in the back yard and wouldn't explain himself to anyone was mind-bogglingly funny.) Krustee is agreed by one and all, is he not, to be about the funniest thing on two animated legs...yet has there ever been a more degraded character? The Kamp Krustee episode roolz from beginning to end, and is almost gleefully misanthropic.

Apropos of nothing I feel compelled to quote a song that hasn't heretofore been mentioned:

Some folks'll never eat a skunk,
but then again some folk'll...
like Cletus,
the Slack-Jawed Yokel!

i cant stand to watch Season 1...i have the Season 2 DVD but much of that also seems a bit dud (i only call you a-dud compared to a-seasons 3 to 8-a!) now - maybe i've just seen them too many times. regardless i await Season 3 (where things really kick off for me) with the most baited of breath

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Best' is always hard to do, but my favourite is definitely "Insane Clown Poppy", simply for the sequence at the beginning where Bart and Homer fix things using fireworks. Oh, and the "How did you find me? Well, my mom always said that my father was a sad old clown" and the "Somebody here is a snitch" bits are both brilliantly funny.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

seven months pass...
Recent research indicates that, while the with-heart episodes may not be better than the without-heart ones, there's a good reason for the Simpsons to go back to with-heart: On the vicious surreal black comedy front, The Family Guy kicks its ass.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 18 August 2003 11:50 (twenty years ago) link

but the 'with-heart' (as in the ones where the family were still likeable despite flaws) ones WERE better dagnabbit

How on Earth can you extol the virtues of "Homie the Clown" and not mention the bicycle trick!?! I totally collapsed a lung laughing at that bit!

I can't believe you mentalists left out 'Lisa's Valentine'!

The pointless busywork! Miss hoover demonstrating the safety scissors' bluntness on her arm! "It says be, and there's a picture of a bee on it!"
Ralph walking Lisa home from school: "so, do you like...stuff?" and later, "the doctor said i wouldn't get so many nosebleeds if i kept my finger out of there"!
KBBL accidentally playing 'Monster Mash' several times!
Krusty's live spectacular - "and now my favourite part of the evening, talk to the audience??! *groan, mumble* this bit always kills me"

damn i miss the daily repeats. k-lassic.

Over the last month I've watched pretty much all of the last few years (finally) and: That heart isn't gone at all, it's just dispaced and done strangely. It's all about repeating themes with minor characters that seem like throwaways at first but which build up to something more meaningful. Nelson's home life, Moe's suicidal tendencies, even Lenny parade of medical problems, Mrs. Krabapple dealing with Skinner -- this is where the "heart" of the show is invested now.

It's very odd.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Who "came out of the closet" in that recent episode a couple months ago? they were advertising it but the way Fox jerks around the Simpsons schedule, I missed it. Was it the obvious: Smithers? Or did they pull out a surprise that was great?

Triple Ho, Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought the Pieman episode from last season was very funny.

Last night they showed the rerun where Homer and Barney duke it out to go to space. So many good lines/sightgags in that one.

Bart: Wow, my father an astronaut. I feel so full of...what's the
opposite of shame?
Marge: Pride?
Bart: No, not _that_ far from shame.
Homer: [quavering] Less shame?
Bart: [happy] Yeah...
