I wouldn't say it was un-warranted, that play with Tyree was pretty amazing along with the ending TD. There have been a bunch of other QBs that rode a killer defense to a championship without having to do even that much.

I'm glad the guy at least won it once to maybe justify the hype around him having a famous last name. Whatever happens from here out is pretty much gravy. I got to think that he will loosen up and maybe play better, as there is not as much of an onus upon him.

Manning deserved the credit, it's not like anybody ignored the d-lines role (Spagnolo's schemes were only mentioned 30000 times in the sports media world). Two td passes against one of the tougher defenses in the league in a short span of time.....and how many times did he convert on 3rd down?

That play was a fluke. The defense won the team the Super Bowl, Tuck, or any of the D-Linemen, should have been MVP. E. Manning is mediocre at best.

He was persona non grata around these parts until he got hot at the right time at the end of the year. The second half of the Buffalo game was really his turning point.

it looks like he jumped high and it skipped off his fingertips, it didn't look that catchable.

it bounced off his fingertips while he was at the highest point of his perfectly-timed leap, body fully extended. that would've been an amazing catch for any WR, let alone a CB.

really, you'd be better off harping on belichick for not taking the field goal on 4th and 14, or for not calling a proper 2-minute offense on the final drive (when, needing only a field goal and having a timeout or two left, brady just heaved it to moss a few times; game over.)

You know in a few years when Peyton and Eli are done playing football, there are going to be a lot of people that look back at these two brothers that played football with some wistful eyes.

Two brothers, both engaging (yet different) personalities and yet so damn successful in anything, let alone sports.

It just doesn't happen and I think it is going to take awhile for people to really register how unique a thing it really was.

Enjoy it now. In a weird way, I kind of had a similar feel towards the last Bulls run with Jordan and I remember it kind of well against the Jazz in that last series. He retired again and came back, but I kind of remember from that last series, you know, this is really great but it's almost done. The Manning brothers might go on for a few more years, but I don't think it is quite acknowledged how unique it really is, even though they are such big popular and really great athletes.

I could see Peyton wanting to hang around for a bit to try and win a second title and then maybe get the alltime Yards or TD record. He'd probably have to play, be good and stay healthy 4 or 5 years to do that though, since Favre played into his 40s.

Even if Peyton doesnt get either of those records, and doesnt win another SB, he will still be more highly regarded historically than Favre.

In my opinion he is just a better quarterback than Favre. Same amount of SB's, but i just think he's better, and i think that would probably be the general consensus among cognoscenti going forward. Pretty sure I'm not going out on a limb here. I'd much rather have Manning in his prime than Favre

ok. i'm not arguing personally but it seems like sports culture starting with THE WORLDWIDE LEADER hold brett up as exemplar for the ages; would be kinda surprised to see that worm turn.

i think brett favre is about as disliked as roger clemens these days, both w/attendant comedic blundering re: extramarital misadventures, though at least brett seems to have kept it 100% age of consent.

manning bros are genuinely beloved imo, favre is "a legend" whom no one actually likes anymore, not even GB pack fans it seems.

i'd say peyton is/was a better quarterback, had a longer 'prime' than favre and was definitely smarter/made better decisions

otoh there was a window there in the mid-90s when favre was making throws i don't think i've ever seen anyone make (maybe because they were too smart to try). and, probably unfairly, i think favre's half-assed exit has diminished his, uh, legacy

Favre really screwed up his legacy by hanging on going to other clubs. He played Ok, but he killed his ties to the home club Packers going to the Vikings then being such a whiny chump on the will he retire or won't he and getting busted flashing his junk on a cell phone. I think it paid off in the short run, sure...but I think Packer fans and cost him ALOT of unconditional appreciation from the fans that really backed him.

That said, really when Favre was cool was around the couple of years before the Pack won it all when he was tossing underhanded 20 yard passes for TDs and head butting people. Favre was so bad in the playoffs in those dome games, especially how many games they won in the regular season, it took like 5 or 6 failures and the Giants game the last time for the talking heads to shut up and finally realize their messiah kind of was sucking in the playoffs big time and playing like a gd idiot at points.

But in a way that kind of goes to show how deep those early years in Green Bay really were...especially considering how bad the Pack had been for more than a couple decades (and yet still kind of loved by the NFL fans overall). He did put that club, which is really unique back on the map and did so with flair.

Peyton is similar to Favre that he brought an old storied club the Colts who had been a laughing stock and moved back to being respectable. In game play, the dude is the complete opposite and his general on the field game play is kind of unique. Manning is the best general on the field probably ever in the history of the game. Marino had a better arm. Montana was just cool and played on a killer all around club.

Good post, i agree. Also take my opinion with a grain of salt, I'm a Bears fan, so I'm supposed to hate Favre.

it would purely be for the 2 super bowl wins, he really has nothing else on his resume and if pass stats continue to trend upwards that's be even more the case by the time his eligibility rolls around. phil simms prob has a more reasonable claim to the HOF and he probably isn't getting in either.

it's funny looking at old football stats, such a different game. like namath threw 173 TDs and turned the ball over 243 times in his career and he's a legend

Eli has had a better career than Plunkett, who also won two Superbowls.

eli's last couple seasons have been good, and the two seasons before his hilarious 2013 were almost as good. i think his cameron frye persona masks some of his skills and intangibles tbh.

Eli is in the Hall of Fame. The dude is Payton Manning's brother, won 2 Superbowls in New York and beat the Patriots in a couple of the most ridiculous ways possible.

NFL Hall is way more about the Fame than greatness, that's why they put in like a QB and WR and maybe put in a whole O-line every 20 years.

I've said it before, greatness in the NFL is a whole lot of luck. Tom Brady gets drafted by the Chiefs, he might have been great, but he wouldn't be Tom Brady you know now.
