What is it with boys and Dune? I read them, I liked them...but the lifetime obsession? The being-caught-by-yr-girlfriend-muttering-"fear is the mindkiller/fear is the little death"-before-shows?

I like Dune! I loved the first one, I got incredibly excited about things like Paul finding the weird garden room in the attic and all the mystery that implied. And the painstaking backstory bits and the "hyper-competent warriors" thing where the Fremen and Duncan Idaho have their meeting of minds. But take it as a life compass?

kind of off-topic:

When my grand-uncle was in the hospital undergoing radiation & chemo, he used to tell me when I visisted that when he went to sleep, how he would duel (i.e. fence) Duncan Idaho. IN HIS DREAMS. He used to complain how difficult it was, because Idaho was adhering to agressive Italian rules, while my grand-uncle was more partial to the refined French form.
