Just released on July 15th a new Propaganda remixes compilation album: Propaganda - Outside World

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dream Within A Dream is my favourite but the whole of A Secret Wish is great.

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alexander, are you counting that horrid 1 2 3 4 album they did with half the band replaced by newbies? I loved both A Secret Wish and Wishful Thinking, but 1 2 3 4 made me cry, it was so mediocre.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh, erm, no I wasn't - that was rubbish wasn't it? I was kinda more defending the Claudia Bruken. I'll say it again, both Act albums are great (though I don't have the US version with the extra tracks dang!)

I remember mostly about 1234 was I bought it on cassette for a long car drive I was about to make. And I hardly ever bought pre- recorded cassettes too. I didn't listen to it until I set off and well, it was rubbish. What is Derek Forbes up to now?

Alexander Blair, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

In 10th grade or so, I listened to _A Secret Wish_ every single day for months. Also, the "beta" mix of p:Machinery (with that roaring guitar fading in and out of the mix) is a miraculous thing. Played something from _Wishful Thinking_, maybe "Laughed," at a club where I was DJing a few months ago and it lit the place up.

I secretly like "Heaven Give Me Words," but wouldn't recommend _1 2 3 4_ to anyone with a straight face.

Douglas, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Everything on ZTT (ie A Secret Wish, the remix album and the various singles and remixes with Claudia Brucken singing) is worth checking out, although I'd only recommend the remix album to diehards. Yes, I'll admit to liking Heaven Give Me Words and a couple more tracks on 1 2 3 4 (recorded, by the way, with the former Simple Minds rhythm section that played with them live) but no, I wouldn't recommend it either. Neither would I Brucken solo. Apparently they've reformed and have been trying for a few years to get an album out.

BTW, I saw them live back in the Fall of 1985 here in Portugal. Not very good; live drums, live bass and lots of keyboards and pre-programmed stuff, it all sounded a bit cheesy and very similar to the album.

[update: the Propaganda reformation did not work out in the studio - unfortunately there will be no new Propaganda material. Source: Side- Line website earlier this year.]

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What everyone said really - A Secret Wish is one of the ten best records ever made. Some gigantic, beautiful moments which almost rival the best bits of ABC and The Human League.

The moment in P-Machinery where all the synths fizz out into the distance and Claudia holds the silence for maybe 0.3 of a second longer than in previous verses, before coming in with a breathy 'Installed By The Machine' gets me every time. The way that her voice comes up close and quiet, right in your ear for 'Hunting for a bygone picture' (The Chase)..., the whole of Duel...,the best keyboard sounds ever... oh God - genius!

Why does it hurt when my heart misses a beat?

Dr. C, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, I went out and bought Outside World and A Secret Wish last night and they're bloody brilliant. I can't believe they aren't better known.

RickyT, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

but ricky t, you were only 9? in 1985, so it's not your fault for not experiencing Propaganda at the time - they had a few chart hits!

Propaganda had quite a lot of radio support from the likes of Gary Davies, Peter Powell and Annie Nightingale on radio 1.

from my weblog, Great news concerning yet another attempt of getting a new Propaganda album !

Propaganda and Claudia Bracken: Both Back in the Studio !

Lexicon Magazine report:

Propaganda's original members Ralf Dörper, Michael Mertens and Suzanne Freytag are currently working on a new Propaganda record, the other original vocalist Cladia Brucken is concurrently at work on a solo album which reportedly includes her version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill".

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 8 December 2002 20:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Martian, tracks from those earier aborted Propaganda sessions showed up on file sharing sites last spring or summer. Indeed, they did not work out.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 8 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

This news to me reads that Cladia is not involved - with the other 3 trying yet another new attempt of getting a new Propaganda album?

Yeah, I knew that the tried to reform within the past 2 years but things did not work out.

[Prehaps my heading was confusing they are back in the studio working but separately !]

[the Lexicon news was updated this week !]

Revive, because I wonder if the newish Claudia Brucken and Andrew Poppy album is any good (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007WVA8M/qid=1121048452/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_11_1/026-0967282-2435628). How could it not be good, given the covers of "Running up that hill" and "Libertango"?

Have just read on another web site that Suzanne Freytag is dead- is this true? It was on the deviantART site; a French guy who contributes fractal / vorticist artwork to the site, is inspired by 'A Secret Wish' for much of his creativity, and mentioned that she'd died. If true, it must be pretty recent, she was still around in November '05. What a terrible loss.
Can anyone elighten me re. the origins of the quote that appears above the listing for Jewel / Duel on the album sleeve- is it Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, or Moretti? Sounds like it might be from Barthes, though I'm not sure....
Cheers,
Owen.

Well that sure is sad if it's true. I'm gonna have a look at the ZTT discog in a sec here. I wonder what Andrew Poppy sounds like...

brutal brutal poll (quite fond of Joyride now along with a lot of other rapidly disappearing off the horizon pop of that time I didn't initially much care for)

while we're here I noticed this compilation on Spotify from 2014 of ZTT tracks seemingly reworked by Blank & Jones of all people possibly using masters of the originals. 12 minute edit of 'Duel' because there weren't already enough mixes - longest one to date? the 'Do Well' EP(?) from 1985 has in turn appeared on there too

but the 'Noise And Girls...' deluxe compilation from a few years back has been taken off >:[

Just came across this recent YouTube addition, a nice quality recording of a 1985 benefit for Greenpeace. Looks like they were great live, contrary to what someone said upthread (19 years ago).

Woah, no kidding. I'd also heard the myth they were not good live but this totally belies that. Maybe sounding close to your very good sounding 1985 album doesn't seem like a bad thing in 2022. There's certainly some playback but plenty of live playing and the vocals are on point.

feed me with your clicks (Noel Emits), Friday, 21 January 2022 14:58 (two years ago) link

I did actually see Propaganda live in 1985 and I don't remember it being particularly good, but you're right this footage is great. Think that's Derek Forbes of Simple Minds on bass guitar, btw.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 21 January 2022 15:06 (two years ago) link

i saw them in '85 too, 4 weeks after this, and recall it being quite disappointing but this does seem way better. it is Derek Forbes which i don't think i knew at the time, nor did i appreciate was an incredible bassist he is.

I've never seen live footage of them before or even contemplated that they might play live. I'm surprised by the enthusiastic 1980s dancing. The Simple Minds bass player thing is making me contemplate what I think of cool/arty and not. Were Simple Minds those things at some point? I should add that wine has happened.
