I'm sort of partial to It's Only Natural or Fall At Your Feet, but it's been years since I heard the album. Maybe now's the for another listen.

I love the entire record but "How Will You Go" is such a beautiful lullaby. And you have to like a song that claims God "can't stand Beelzebub 'cause he looks so good in black."

ellaguru, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:34 (sixteen years ago) link

"It's Only Natural" for the win, with an honorable mention to "Whispers and Moans".

o. nate, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

this is one of my favorite Geir Albums

i think i voted for "fall at your feet" but i forget already, there's so many tunes here i like

ciderpress, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

OMG WOODFACE. Half this album was written two streets from my flat.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago) link

btw Four Seasons wins because that's what they played in Melbourne last year as a tribute to Paul Hester. Neil Finn teared up during the song (of course). The whole thing was so affecting.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Going to go with the flow and vote for 'Four Seasons...'. Though I think that Together Alone is the better album, more cohesive, darker and stranger.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

its only natural is great songcraft, but the whole of weather with you is better imo

woodface > temple of low men > together alone

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link

"Weather With You". What Alex said. Like Duran Duran's "Save A Prayer" and Air's "All I Need" it's one of those unique songs that never tire me, no matter how many times I hear it. Those high piano notes in the background - so great.

willem, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Looks like a race between "Weather With You" and "Four Seasons In One Day" so far, and it's an interesting race because it's very much a question of the Finn brothers versus Neil alone. "Weather With You" is a very typical joint effort, with almost everything sung in harmony like Everly Brothers/Byrds, while "Four Seasons In One Day" is an archetypical Neil Finn ballad that Tim probably had little to do with (I know he is credited as a co-writer though). "Four Seasons In One Day" also represents more than "Weather With You" the kind of song that would dominate the "Together Alone" album.

Geir, have you heard the latest album?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

shocked shocked shocked that no one's said much about "Whispers and Moans" or the sublime "She Goes On." It's got that "And I Loved Her" vibe – rapture and lust cooled by simply being there.

I'll probably be flamed to death for this, but this year I'm going to listen to Geir's top 50.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder if we should have a thread devoted to Geir's top 50 albums (That Kent album is stellar, particularly after the one before it being so boring).

edwardo, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I am among those who start most polls here, but I am not going to start that poll. :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:38 (sixteen years ago) link

(Plus I am 100 per cent certain Radiohead would win)

Death by melody.

"Tangled up necklace of pearls"--siiiigh... Soooo good this album. I LOVE this album--though I do think, like Billy Dods, that Together Alone is more cohesive. Four Seasons and Fall are both such stand-outs.

Apparently Mitchell Froom felt like the album would've been more of a classic if they had cut a few songs, like the "Tim Finn sings Sinatra" number.

And even though my band was mocked mercilessly for liking CH in a review, I still maintain, they are so cooooooooool.

Jubalique die Zitronen, Thursday, 24 January 2008 04:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Another one for "Weather With You" here.

And agreed that Geir has been on a TEAR of late.

rogermexico., Thursday, 24 January 2008 06:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Produced by Youth, no? AGAIN, IT ALL COMES BACK TO KILLING JOKE!

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 24 January 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link

KL FTW. Man, I'm torn about Youth. That Heather Nova record was like listening in an empty swimming pool.

Jubalique die Zitronen, Friday, 25 January 2008 04:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i generally find this band dreadfully dull and laboured, but i somehow still know every song

will go with 'weather with you' - good lyrics, even better chorus hook

Charlie Howard, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

good lyrics

^ this is the story of Neil Finn

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Produced by Youth, no?

He produced "Together Alone". On "Woodface" it was still Mitchell Froom, as it had been from the debut.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 25 January 2008 09:00 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah autumn, definitely the spark of the band's music is in the lyrics

Wow - "Whispers and Moans" totally shut out.

o. nate, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago) link

these poll results are EXACTLY right. four amazing songs surrounded by a bunch of pretty good ones that are made by better by virtue of sharing space on a cd with them.

fact checking cuz, Sunday, 3 February 2008 08:41 (sixteen years ago) link

thirteen years pass...

foolish results. Whispers & Moans and Four Seasons should take it. All I Ask is a very, VERY weird departure on this lp?

otm

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 June 2021 15:16 (two years ago) link

I think it’s credited to both brothers, but All I Ask seems like a very much more Tim song, while Neil’s aesthetic dominates most of the rest.

Kim, Saturday, 5 June 2021 17:15 (two years ago) link

The harmony vocals on the chorus of Fall At Your Feet are the pinnacle of CH's career.

enochroot, Saturday, 5 June 2021 20:03 (two years ago) link

and the keyboard fills are Froom's.
