Minor Threat beat them in terms of general EDGE music. The Biscuits were a bit too suburban and spawned lots of shithead Victory Records types who are much too macho and serious.

But, uh, the best American hardcore bands are the Germs and the Dead Kennedy's.

hey trees

The statement remains inaccurate, Alex is right.

GB might have defined "88 style" or "NE suburban", or even "straightedge hardcore"*, but certainly not "hardcore" as an all encompassing genre, and the "beginnings of hardcore" comment is pure nonsense.

*GB didn't start straightedge, and there were plenty of bands before them who had X's. however, the argument that the sxe scene didn't really take off until after 88, and that more straightedge clone bands from the late 80s and early 90s list GB over say, crucial youth as an influence is an argument that's worthy. Minor threat started the straightedge spark, but it was GB that made it a scene and a sound.

Does Peter J. D'Angelo, the author of that dubious hyperbole write anywhere else but Allmusic? I wonder how he got the hardcore niche there (google shows him reviewing a Pennywise cd for AllMusic).

Hi Alex good to see you posting again.

History is a disgusting process.

"Egregiously", now THERE'S a hot word.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:18 (seventeen years ago) link

...Attila undoubtedly is the worst album released in the history of rock & roll — hell, the history of recorded music itself...colossal stupidity...heavy rock organ-and-drums...an atrocious combination...an unbearable, unholy noise...organ with piles of effects pedals, Leslie organs, distortion, and wah-wah...yells, not sings...flails away haplessly at his drums...impossible to make out the riffs...organ just sounds like a wall of white noise...no melodies, only shouting. Everything is turned to 11...style...instrumentation, attack, and effects never change...as if a drill has punctured the center of your skull...piercing, painful, and monotonous..."psychedelic bullshit." Remove the word "psychedelic" and you have an accurate description of the album...dressed as Huns on the cover...standing in a meat locker...the most ridiculous album package in rock & roll history.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine

!!!

Myonga Von Bombast (Monty Von Byonga), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:00 (seventeen years ago) link

It's an album to build a career upon, which would be a remarkable achievement by any measure, but coming after the near career suicide of Stripped, it's all the more impressive.

also stephen thomas erlewine.

you want pastrami? (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahahaha yeah, I just read that like WTF?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:25 (seventeen years ago) link

(That album sold 12 million worldwide FFS)

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:27 (seventeen years ago) link

...I mean, Jesus Christ, Erlewine: How can anyone read that and NOT want to hear Attila immediately?! I know I did.

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't heard Attila, but now I want to download it! It's Billy Joel, right?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 17 August 2006 07:45 (seventeen years ago) link

This is what reporting on Hillary Duff for MTV does to a man.

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 17 August 2006 08:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Every time I read that review I want to hear that Attila album more. Hell, I want to compare it side-by-side with other bands named Attila (there's at least one other, some ultra-obscure prog act).

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 17 August 2006 10:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Here's a small clip of Billy Joel talking about Attila!

Amplifier Fire is a nice song to start with.

fourteen years pass...

not AllMusic themselves, but this person named "S1mon3 Appolon1" seems to have reviewed just about every metal album out there and seems to also have the worst taste in metal that has ever existed.

Filibuster Poindexter (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 April 2021 23:02 (two years ago) link

(they're a user, but it seems like they spent all of 2018 writing user reviews)

Filibuster Poindexter (Neanderthal), Friday, 30 April 2021 23:02 (two years ago) link

So what kind of stuff does he like/dislike?

Siegbran, Friday, 30 April 2021 23:36 (two years ago) link

they don't seem to like anything, lol....it's not a big deal, just find it funny that literally every time I've looked up a metal album on AllMusic, there's their review.

here's their page - almost everything is one or two stars, I think Borknagar and Lacuna Coil scored 3 stars lol

Siegbran, why hast thou abandoned the rolling metal threads? Your presence is missed.
