It's an album rather than a song, but I can't resist mentioning "George Best" by The Wedding present

Major Bloodnok (Major Bloodnok), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:56 (eighteen years ago) link

And if we can stretch to commentators as well: Half Man Half Biscuit- Gubba Look-a-Likes

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Louis Philippe - "Eusebio"

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Ed Banger & The Nosebleeds, "Kinnel Tommy"

Tony Bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Midfield General - Bergkamp

yer mam! (yer mam!), Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:12 (eighteen years ago) link

And then there's "God's Footballer" by Billy Bragg which is apparently a tribute to Peter Knowles (although I personally wanted it to be about David Icke)

Major Bloodnok (Major Bloodnok), Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Didn't Joe Strummer have a song called Tony Adams?

Actually, I know it's not the done thing to say this any more, but can we have YSIs of some of these? This is the perfect birthday CDR!

Also, I want to hear what Kasey Keller sounds like. Please say it just loops "I didn't realise Thierry Henry was that fast!" over and over again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, what was the atrocious late 90s Evening Sesh record that went "Georgie Best, superstar, Stanley Matthews, Cantona"?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 9 March 2006 22:35 (eighteen years ago) link

One of Dempsey's passions outside of soccer is hip hop music. Using the alias "Deuce", he is featured rapping the song "Don't Tread" in a Nike soccer advertising campaign intended to showcase both the sport's working-class roots and the United States team ahead of the 2006 World Cup.

Antonello Venditti - La Coscienza Di Zeman

Please tell me this is a song about the Nandrolone scandal?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 9 March 2006 23:19 (eighteen years ago) link

No but I've been told Elton's I'm Still Standing is an ode to a Romanian footballer.

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 9 March 2006 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

You Are My Solskjær

Oh, you meant songs that have actually been released? :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 March 2006 00:36 (eighteen years ago) link

No but I've been told Elton's I'm Still Standing is an ode to a Romanian footballer.
-- blunt (blunt120...), March 9th, 2006.
isn't it about his recovery fom doing drugs ?
" i'm still standing " meaning it's a wonder i'm here ?

retrokid, Friday, 10 March 2006 03:03 (eighteen years ago) link

That's what he'd have you believe, dear. It actually recounts a steamy 1983 after-match shower encounter that left him so weak his knees were applauding. But still standing.

And the Bennato thing was a cover/parody of Trio's Da Da Da. This one's true.

blunt (blunt), Friday, 10 March 2006 06:52 (eighteen years ago) link

umababarauma by jorge ben

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 10 March 2006 06:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Rattled by the Rush - Pavement (about Ian Rush, if I remember)

Also - a special mention to the CD of pop songs with the lyrics changed to be about Aresnal players that is played on loop by the burger vans outside my house everytime Arsenal play at home. The best two are a song about Thierry Henry to the tune of P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent and a reggae riddim that I don't recognise with the lyrics 'Viera, ooh ohh...' (although obviously this last one hasn't been played this year). Not being a huge football fan, I'm not sure if other teams have similar CDs, so if anyone can enlight me I'd apreciate it.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 10 March 2006 08:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Fritz, Umbabarauma doesn't strictly speaking have a footballer's name in its title, but it is unquestionably the greatest song about football ever recorded.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 10 March 2006 09:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma), is how I know the track.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Friday, 10 March 2006 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

...to give it the full title, jimnaseum, yes.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Pedantry strikes!

Zeus, didn't the Barmy Army, Sherwood, etc do a song called Billy Bonds? Oh and Sharp as a Needle was about Dalglish.

You Are My Solskjær

RJG (RJG), Friday, 10 March 2006 12:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I vaguely recall someone (Frank Skinner?) trying to take the piss out of David Ginola by playing a song called Ginola Le Magnifique that some dodgy fan had composed and Ginola said that he used it as the background music on his website and that it would be the title of his book.

Ladies & gentlement, the Hitchers:

She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, "what's that you're watching?",
"It's a Programme about art".
She said, "A Programme about art?", I said
"A programme about art" and then the greatest
midfield artist of them all walked out onto the park.
The crowd were on their feet and they whistled and
they cheered for the tiny wee Scotsman
with the copper coloured hair.
She said, "You just don't care, You never listen you know"
Lukic out to Wetherall and Wetherall to Dorigo.
Dorigo knocks it on to Fairclough, Fairclough looks for Speed.
Now she's ranting like a lunatic, "I'm switching off that telly".
"Look at me while I'm talking to you!"
To Strachan now -puts Kelly through
There's one man pulling all the strings and twenty-two
know damn well who.
The air begins to thicken. Inside the box Strachan has stricken
The gap unfilled -he makes the kill -One-Nil

She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, "what's that you're watching?",
"It's a Programme about art".
She said, "A Programme about art?", I said
"A programme about art" and then the artist
tackles perfectly and floats over the park
to the waiting Rodney Wallace who knocks
it back in to Deane and now the Deane Machine
to McAllister and McAllister's just seen
that Gordon Strachan slipped his marker
and he's free now in space
he's got 'em pouring forward spraying the ball
all over the place.
Now Gary Speed is involved again, he steadies the ball.
"am I talking to myself?", she says, "or talking to the wall?"
"Will you look at me while I'm talking to you!"
To Strachan now -puts Fairclough through
There's one man pulling all the strings and twenty-two
know damn well who.
The air gets even thicker.
The 'keepers quick -Gordon Strachan's quicker.
The gap unfilled -he makes the kill -Two-Nil.

She waited for the match to start
to start a fight up with me.
She said, "what's that you're watching?",
"It's a Programme about art".
"If you don't take your grief and bad vibes and get out of my face
I'm gonna sit right here and whistle my way through Melrose Place"

You could've lit the air in the room with a matchstick,
McAllisters cross sets up Strachans hat-trick
The gap unfilled -Strachans skill -Three-Nil

Does anyone remember an Italian reggae/dancehall track prior to the 1994 World Cup whose chorus went:

Roberto Baggio / non e un miraggio.

I can hear it in my head and feel sure I haven't imagined it.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 10 March 2006 14:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Il Generale- Roberto Baggio (Non E Un Miraggio).

Man, I'd completely forgotten about that song for ten years.

and from the man himself, "After a long career in soccer as a coach, I'd like to present you with my dream team composed of 11 players. Each player will be represented by a track, it'll be a free download and there will also be some extra content on my Instagram page. Let’s start with one of the craziest goal keeper ever: Rene Higuita aka « El loco »"
