just about everything by CONNIE is great. She's at the top of my list. I also like SEQUAL. stuff on Joey Boy is generally good. anything with Pretty Tony production is generally worth checking out.
Latinos down here in Texas go crazy for this stuff. I've been meaning to check out one of those freestyle revival tours for awhile now.

Nocera's "Summertime, Summertime" is a killer as well. With freestyle, it's really all about bad vocals delivered with the utmost conviction.

Jeez, do any of you amazing people have Nocera's "Summertime, Summertime" at an audio quality higher than 128? I love this track but being forced to listen to this tinny, thin sound is ruining my life.

another great tape to be made would be "Oh, Oh, Freestyle Goes Acid". cuz by the late 80's lots of freestyle singles were including acid remixes and i love those. my mix is pretty trad though. which is why i didn't put any hip-house remixes on my tape either. hip-house and acid were the future - or the now sound at the turn of the 80's - but the swift edits and killer drum programming of classic freestyle is where my heart lies.

Rocking that list right now!Alfred, I’m very curious about your thoughts on a South African song that’s part of this little poll I organized the other day. I mentioned there how it somehow reminded me of Latin Freestyle (it must be in the air!)(Nayobe’s “Please Don’t Go” features twice on your list btw)

4. India, "Dancing on the Fire" (1988)Today, India is best known as a salsa singer; she won a Latin Grammy for her album Intensamente con Canciones de Juan Gabriel in 2016. However, her 1990 debut solo record, Breaking Night, is the link between freestyle and house with production from Jellybean Benitez, "Little" Louie Vega and Mantronik. The standout cut from the album is the Benitez-produced "Dancing on the Fire" with its dramatic synth lines and India's intense vocal workout. Originally released as a single in 1988, "Dancing on the Fire" is pretty late in the game for freestyle, which began to wane at the start of the ’90s, and the singer isn't all that well-known for her work in this area. Outside of her salsa records, India is widely recognized in the house music world, particularly for the now-classic Masters at Work track "I Can't Get No Sleep."

It’s good (50% classics) but it also reflects some particuiar personal tastes that I don’t share. This is one of the few times when I think I would be a better compiler than Bob Stanley. But I don’t see how he could have come up with any obscure-but-great freestyle record that I haven’t already heard. I followed the genre closely through its entire lifespan, mostly by listening to WPOW Power 96 out of Miami.

There simply aren’t many freestyle acts who weren’t from either New York or Miami, and the ones that weren’t were only tangentially freestyle-related such as Stacey Q (LA), Information Society (Minneapolis), or Nu Shooz (Portland)
― Josefa, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 20:46 (nine months ago) link
The one “dud” act at the Freestyle Festival I attended a few weeks back was (unfortunately) from here in L.A. – but he’s not really a freestyle artist anyway: Egyptian Lover.
― Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 August 2023 20:58 (nine months ago) link
(he suuuuucked)
Egyptian Lover was clearly electro but I think he did have a big influence on freestyle too. After all, freestyle was spawned from electro. Countless freestyle records utilize the Kraftwerk “Numbers” beat in the same way Afrika Bambaataa used it in “Planet Rock”
― Josefa, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 21:28 (nine months ago) link
I'm not a stickler for genre. "Two of Hearts" belongs on a freestyle comp. Heard it blast for months in summer and fall '86 on WPOW 96.5 Miami around the harder freestyle stuff.
