I am on the fence about this. It's Girls Aloud, so I give benefit of the doubt and will listen another 15 times.

"There will be TWO Girls Aloud singles before Christmas - 'Biology' on November 14 then another one we're not allowed to tell you anything about one month later." - Popjustice

i must say this song is at first a bit awkward. i was like..what the hell are they doing, then it gets going and i'm like...perhaps. it grows on you very quickly.

mine seems to be only of medium to low quality. does anyone have a higher or better quality version of this song, cause i feel that if it gets super clear i would fall into an orgasm pit....perhaps.

retroboy, Saturday, 8 October 2005 13:00 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, that was wierd. The bluesy piano intro (that's repeated somewhere in the middle) is definitely not my cup of tea. Things start to get better once the verse kicks in, and I really liked the chorus (I don't think Xenomania can write a bad chorus). The whole thing reminds me of Franz Ferdinand a bit.

This will either be a massive hit or completely flop. Anyway, IMO it is the most original thing the Girls have done, so kudos for that.

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 8 October 2005 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

This'll probably flop, but it'll flop in a blaze of glory!

iodine (iodine), Saturday, 8 October 2005 22:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I really need to hear a non-radio rip before I decide, but I sure liked this when I heard it last night. I was all set to write it off after it changed gears from stomping piano into Xenomania fireworxxx, but then the chorus kicked in and all critical trains of thought came to an abrupt end.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 9 October 2005 03:11 (eighteen years ago) link

What I liked best is the half-spoken bits in the chorus, and the 'blues lick' at the start.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Does Louis Walsh still have overall control of the band? Because this (and "Long Hot Summer" for that matter) definitely have his sticky fingerprints all over them.

does anyone have a copy of the actual lyrics
they seem quite amazing in places such as "i order cappuccino to go something something cause if i party anymore something something something" that part could be quite brilliant.

it would be nice if someone had a real ear and could understand them. if not i'll have to wait for the single

ollie, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

also, does anyone know what song they sample in the beginning cause i know that "bluesy" intro is a sample. i just can't figure out what it is.

also brittle, i have to agree. girls aloud's producers need to learn that slow style ballads are so 1992-1996. and if they do i'll stand by you it up we should petition them to re-record it proper.

"The way that we TALK. The way that we WALK."

I agree that the above chorus is poptastic, but it takes its time getting to the good bits. Don't really understand who thought the first 30 seconds or so of pounding piano was a good intro to the song.

Have never been a big fan of Girls Aloud till I heard this new track 'Biology' and saw the video on CD UK that goes with it and have to admit this is by far the best thing they have done, and is going to do really well.

Why ? Because it breaks a few rules ..... it's true that it sounds a bit like 3 diff songs spliced together but that it part of the genius of the song. I think you will find that a lot of people, like myself, that have never really been hooked on the girls and their music in the past will be hooked with this track.

The chorus, whether tou loveit or hate it, is as catchy as hell and one you cant get out of your head after you have heard it.

Only disappointment is the video. GREAT concept, girls look fantastic, love the whole idea, etc, etc ..... BUT .... the syncronisation is appauling, and sone of the editing is just not quite on the money !!! Whoever edited it needs shooting coz the look of video is brilliant and goes well with the song, as do the dance routines, etc, but one or two of them, who will remain nameless, need to loosen up and not appear so stiff or like they are getting instructions from the floor manager just out of line of sight on the sets.

Apart from that, this will be Top 3 and possibly even a Number one.

Watch this space !!!

Will 'Biology' really be top 3? Plenty of people have said it'll kill their career as the kids just won't get it. I, however, LOVE it. Just watched the Home Truths show, someone give Cheryl and Ashley their own reality TV show asap as they are ADORABLE.

Like all the best Girls aloud songs (No Good Advice, Sound of the Underground, Love Machine), Biology brings a cocaine-like warmness to my teeths. Guess it has something to do with the multi-layered ad-lib -and I hope there will be an extended version for this one.

The people complaining about the blues piano riff are dead fucking wrong. That's the best part by far, and while there's other good bits in there (and it's a pretty fine single), the rest is just so much pop gloss without anything to differentiate it.

I maybe haven't paid close enough attention to her voice, if it's even possible (can't think now if I've seen them not miming or not...) well, she gives off the illusion of being the best anyway. I must have got this idea from somewhere.

Yes. Well spotted.

Rachel's voice is a tool, or a component to be utilised for gain or even just to have its own limitations sidestepped within her songs.. Nadine's is more like a weapon - it's alternatively bludgeoning and sharp and does absolutely nothing for me.

Incidentally, if I'm comparing 'Biology' to any Japanese pop song, it should definitely be Kahimi Karie's 'Le Roi Soleil' (produced by Cornelius and written by Momus, obv.), which it is actually very similar to in execution and basic elements (blues piano excepted).

I'm liking this more with every listen, it's addictive. My favourite part of it is the shimmering synth on the chorus(es). It's buried beneath so many layers (vocals, brushed drums, bassline) that is barely noticeable, yet it provides the harmonic backbone that makes the chorus so catchy.

Even though this song is one of my favorite singles of the year, it has what is without question the lamest attempt to alter the pronunciation of a word in order to make it rhyme that I've ever heard (worse than "...you and I should get along so aw-ful-LY" even!). Yep, right there in the chorus they try their hardest to make "controversy" somehow rhyme with "biology" and "in front of me", but it JUST DOESN'T WORK!!

Unless of course this is a British thing and that's actually how they pronounce the word over there in which case forget everything I just said and then some.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 November 2005 01:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't really think it sounded much like Biology

I didn't really mean to imply it should, but both are electro-inflected Sparksian dreampop-rock numbers that are practically in the same tempo. They don't sound very alike, but you can swap lyrics over and call 'em remixes (in my head anyway).

I'm not even going for comparisons, they've just both become intertwined in my mind.

Finally managed to pick up a copy of the "bumper fan pack" CD single of "Biology" here in the hinterlands of the U.S. of A. I skipped the ringtones, karaoke mix, video game, and bonus Girls Aloud Linux installation for your Mac or PC, and watched the video, which, as someone upthread noted, features some of the worst, most out-of-sync "dancing" from a manufactured pop group that I have ever seen. I'm a little surprised that the Girls, who have otherwise achieved pop perfection, have failed to master this most basic of girl-group skills. Still love 'em though - their klutziness on the dance floor is sort of endearing.
