Justin Guarini is a hack.
Jim Morrison was pretty damn unique. No matter how much I think the Doors are not my style, it seems pretty idiotic to call the guy a hack. He had natural talent and balls and he could carry a toon with some feeling. Was his poetry so bad? I don't know, but it certainly isn't the worst. I'd rather hear spooky songs or drinking songs than another song about a girl. "People Are Strange" is a pretty phenemonal little ditty when it's raining out and you're drunk or on acid or something.
Jim Morrison sounds fantastic on the right day. More atmosphere than most singers can ever hope to create. He seems to have written the first real obvious rebel party dude lyrics, too. He gets a million points just for the line "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer."
Most of that shit sounds like psycho circus music with a Willy Wonka-like ring leader leading you through strange and dark rooms after someone's slipped you a mickey. This might not seem that bizarre these days, but I think The Doors were at times about the creepiest and weirdest thing going, even up against acts like Bonniwell Music Machine. Pretty cool, I always thought Halloween was fun.

Yes, it was. Falling somewhere between Jewel and Ally Sheedy on the How Bad Was It? scale.
He gets a million points just for the line "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer."
I'm no blues historian, but I've got this nagging feeling I just can't shake that there's a precedent.

A) I'll side with Morrison being a hack. Except for Peace Frog, which (I will admit) is fucking brilliant.
B) M.V. (at least from my perspective) OTM. When you fail to appreciate the indisputable beauty of what I like, it merely galvanizes my urge to correct your errant ways. This statement is completely devoid of sarcasm, by the way.

Maybe this is just something I've learned from hanging around with a variety of musicians my whole life, but I find it repulsive when people are critically blinded by their own interests. If you want to be an idiot, by all means, but at least preface with, "I am going to say something idiotic now!"
He's gone on to be an enduring legend. Not common with hacks.

If someone makes a pejorative crack about a favorite band of mine, all it says to me is that they're missing out, or simply that they have different taste. If they wanna smear sickly goop like Scout Niblett or Fall Out Boy or Usher all over their ears, that's their prerogative.

I've been assured that something is definitely wrong with my brain because I don't like DMB, though. You'd think they would be more cool about it, like "I've got my stuff, you've got your stuff, there's some overlap, it's all cool" but instead it's more like insane ranting about how I'm just being contrary and haven't really listened to the music. That shit is deeply classic when I'm in the right mood, but so very dud otherwise.

1) people identify so much with their music and musical preferences are so personal that any criticism of the music becomes interpreted at personal attack. Again, "this music is me, so by attacking this music, you attack me"
2). If Morrison was a hack, what are you guys? If you're you musically inclined at all, let's hear some tunes. How's your voice? Post some lyrics. Etc.
yes, once again, unless you are more technically proficient in a particular area, ANY criticism is invalid since you obviously don't know as much or otherwise you would have already gone thru the work to do the same exact thing etc etc etc
