a trip to Sage's label reveals the "Beuregarde" record

I noticed that! I might have to get it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 24 October 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

so can anyone else confirm that sage died? nothing else has turned up online about it.

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 October 2004 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

(Er...is this possibly a misreading of the news of Greg Shaw's death?)

I'm hopeful this is the case. Greg Shaw and Greg Sage dying within a couple days of each other and from the same ailment? Not impossible, but unlikely.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 24 October 2004 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah I was misreading Greg Shaw threads as Greg Sage threads constantly. I'm not believing this without more verification.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 24 October 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

greg sage will never die, he's an alien alien alien alien boy.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 24 October 2004 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

when i saw this thread title i wasn't reading carefully and assumed it was another greg shaw rip thread.

paranoia is the hipster's disease (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 October 2004 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Shit. I hope he didn't die.

babyalive (babyalive), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't believe it. Yesterday, a review of the Google news tab showed a story from the 8th in the Oregonian on "Beauregarde" delivered by Zeno with paraphrased comment from Sage.

Beauregarde -- the rockin wrestler:

Let this be a mistake.

briania (briania), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

While his lyrical content is occasionally hamfisted ("Janis Joplin, oh she sang the blues/yes she'd still be with us if she'd stuck to booze")

That's actually brilliant!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Someone find this Hot Doug guy and ask him where he gets his news.

Mike Dixon, Monday, 25 October 2004 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, considering the context and music it came with, that's a decent lyric. The guy obviously wasn't afraid of being considered crass, always an asset.

The DVD/CD pack seems like the thing to have. Reminds of Saturday morning "loser" TV back when advertisers weren't interested in pro wrestling or its ugly sister, roller derby.

George Smith, Monday, 25 October 2004 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck.

ALLMUSIC.COM (ddb), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude, read the thread ALLMUSIC, it's very unlikely he is dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm making a suggestion lock up this thread until the person who started it produces an explanation. Newspapers, for example, don't generally run obituaries for people unless they're absolutely sure of their facts. It can be a career ender. Mistakes happen, people being fallible, but this qualifies as annoying.

George Smith, Monday, 25 October 2004 14:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Locked, I dunno. It's actually turned into a good Greg Sage resource!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck was meant as, if the is true, fuck and if this isnt true, fuck.

ALLMUSIC.COM (ddb), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:26 (nineteen years ago) link

FUCK.

Unless something is being subtly implied by the posting of that video, I really think this thread needs renaming.

Listening to his 1985 solo album «Straight Ahead» for the first time, tipped off by Mark Lanegan in «Sing Backwards and Weep», in which he refers to the album as one of the primary inspirations for «The Winding Sheet».

It’s good, sounds pretty much like you’d expect an acoustic Wipers-album to sound. But it lingers.

Mule, Thursday, 14 April 2022 22:12 (two years ago) link

Yes! I discovered it a while back and felt it was almost ambient. I don't think it was distributed widely hence it feeling unknown.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 15 April 2022 01:00 (two years ago) link

mods can we please rename this thread!

Yeah it’s great! sacrifice (for love) is really good too!

Great album! Scary thread title.

cooldix, Friday, 15 April 2022 03:10 (two years ago) link

Yeah, felt uncomfortable bumping it. But it’s the only Sage-thread

Mule, Friday, 15 April 2022 06:52 (two years ago) link

yeah - please, someone do something about this title FFS

StanM, Friday, 15 April 2022 07:15 (two years ago) link

I asked and they changed it. For the record though, griping about something that needs to be cleaned up within a thread is about 99.9% less effective than asking directly in the Moderator Request Forum. https://www.ilxor.com/ILX/NewAnswersControllerServlet?boardid=56

I'll go listen to Straight Ahead now, because I've never heard his solo stuff. Thanks for the tip.

peace, man, Friday, 15 April 2022 16:50 (two years ago) link

(also, if you already have the thread bookmarked, you are still gonna see the old title when it pops up in your bookmarks, and there isn't anything they can do about that)

peace, man, Friday, 15 April 2022 16:50 (two years ago) link

oh yeah, the moderator request forum - hadn't thought of that. Thanks! xpost

StanM, Friday, 15 April 2022 18:11 (two years ago) link

A good friend shared Straight Ahead with me recently. An unexpected gem. I had never heard of it.
