superpitcher and richard davis were both great, too. superpitcher played a lot of his own stuff and lots of chunky chugging choons. very rock-oriented - glam w/o the shuffle. davis played a live set of his own material. his album, safety, was one of my faves of 2002. don't sleep. it's the smoothest and sexiest tech-house around. deep without being boring. both of their sets were well received. it's nice that mayer included a couple of davis' tracks on fabric 13.it will be interesting to see how the u.s. tour goes. unfortunately there are no venues that pack the punch that fabric does.
fabric 13 was released on monday...

Did anyone get the Bugz in the Attic Fabriclive mix? Anything described as "nu-jazz" shouldn't normally be touched even with a big stick held by your mum but I'd subscribed and, blimey again, it's another unexpected treat. I'm not sure but I think it's because they don't wear hats. Hats have always been the downfall of jazz meddlers. Hats and unnecessary facial hair.

1) it's the least "pop", and so of least interest in the critical sense. this ties into my pet conspiracy theory that kompakt gets lots of attention because there's lots to write about. i don't think speicher courts our intellectual kicks as much as other kompakt releases. to use an analogy from the language of, um, fashion magazines it's certainly the least directional collection. ("pop" is probably the wrong word to use up there, but "diverse" doesn't quite nail it either)
2) aside from "love is stronger than pride", "fieber" and "regensburg", most of the tracks go nowhere - although i have heard love from various sources for "supertiel" (nope don't get it), "irre" and "musick".
― vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link
But I think Vahid is mainly right - a lot of those Reinhard Voight-style bangers don't seem to have much purpose except banging, so they're harder to latch onto or become emotionally involved with.

Immer 2 deserves more attention (and a second chance or three).
It lacks the immediate first impression of Immer as well as the easier accessibility of Fabric 13, but Immer 2's so shimmerier and slinkier.

Is his Mantasy album any good? (Or is there conversation about it elsewhere?)
― djh, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link
Mantasy isn't very exciting but I like it just fine.
Recommend his RA podcast from the end of last year, like it better than the album, up there with his older mixes.
― Plasmon, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 23:51 (eleven years ago) link
Read a description of it as "middle aged" which actually made it appeal.
― djh, Thursday, 21 March 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago) link
Mantasy is a nice sort of Sundayish album to sit and read to but it's not really house music, until you get to the final third at least. It's beautifully produced and there's some lovely stuff on it though.
Cosign the recommendation for the RA podcast though, that's essential.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:19 (eleven years ago) link
Ta. Any recommendations on tracks to here from Mantasy? The couple I've played have been a bit ... nothing, really.

That John Peel set is probably the pinnacle of all schaffel for me - the double victory lap of "Unter Null" followed by the T.Raumschmiere remix of "Ich Weiss Warum" is astonishing.

Yes, this is def *the* schaffel mix. I've heard Superpitcher's rmx of Quark's I Walk on at least 2 diff commercial mixes (Optimo & Ivan Smagghe's) but neither are as sleek and sexy as it is on there for me.
