For You is a hoot in a kitchy way. it always reminded me of those rod mckuen records of creepy longing.
bowie mentions some weird t.v. show that newley did that he was really impressed by at the time. i guess it didn't last long. has anyone ever seen any of it?

That'll be Gurney Slade, which I've never seen, apart from the odd (very odd!) clip.

His version of 'Within You,Without You' is hilarious(from a 70's Beatles tribute concert I think)I agree Jez,'Strawberry Fair' is a big favourite of mine too.He also wrote some lovely songs with Leslie Bricusse for 'Dr. Doolittle'

Paul - I assume you've heard What Kind of Fool am I? Something baffles me about it...it was released around 1963(?), but when you listen to the intro, the chords & rhythm are about 20 years ahead of their time...unless I've got one of those versions (Most of the original band were used etc. etc.)

twelve years pass...

Bowie was on NPR in an old interview talking up that Newley-starring [Strange World of Gurney Slade TV show (1960) as one of the most revolutionary comedies ever; apparently there's a UK DVD now. Anyone seen?

five years pass...

Never came across a picture of him until recently, but now I see that Leslie Bricusse looked somewhat like Randy Newman.

As a proud owner of an import Blu-ray I can confirm it's amazing.

You could convince people of this “Bowie reads poetry”
