you mean I'm not the first person to say that? (wrist slashing commences)

You're not the last either, Donna, don't worry.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 30 August 2003 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

besides, they don't all look like Ian Curtis! :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 30 August 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

No, they look like coke mongs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 August 2003 18:16 (twenty years ago) link

who are longwave?

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Saturday, 30 August 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not touching that :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 30 August 2003 18:22 (twenty years ago) link

longwave are U2 to interpol's "joy division"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

Then for the first time in over a decade I'm a U2 fan!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:30 (twenty years ago) link

i love interpol.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:45 (twenty years ago) link

I definitely think Interpol is a lot more like Echo & The Bunnymen.

But...wait for it....wait for it....BETTER!

It can't be said enough. Longwave just sounds generic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:54 (twenty years ago) link

Though probably meant as an insult, jim's description of Longwave is so on the money.

That said, their album is quite good.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:55 (twenty years ago) link

no, not an insult necessarily.. (and i do mean earlier U2 rather than later). i like "tidal wave" as much as "obstacle 1"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 30 August 2003 23:35 (twenty years ago) link

And here was me thinking that liking their uber-earnest, bassy U2 stylings would qualify for universal scorn on ILM! Jim, you have shown me the light (again!). "Everywhere You Turn" is a magnificent pop song.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:29 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, it is

Joshua Houk (chascarrillo), Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:40 (twenty years ago) link

stella was a diver and she was always the best song ever

astroblaster (astroblaster), Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:52 (twenty years ago) link

"I want you but I, want you but I, want you but I feel all inside out." Over and over. What's the damn ~point~?

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Sunday, 31 August 2003 06:42 (twenty years ago) link

Pop song in being repetitive SHOCK! What's your point?

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:05 (twenty years ago) link

sixteen years pass...

There's a new Longwave album out, and it's pretty good! It doesn't hit the highs of "Secrets Are Sinister" but it's solid indie rock.

Not that there's a lot of people who were requesting a new Longwave album...

wow, longwave. i remember really liking the strangest things when it was current but i don't remember anything whatsoever about what it sounds like at this point. seem to recall a really great b-side from that first album called 'here it comes.' they were kind of primary colours-era horrors before the horrors got there, weren't they?

all I remember about that band (and I saw them once too, I think they maybe even opened for the one interpol show I saw?) was that it was rumored he was a rich kid with a dad in the music industry and that was the only explanation for the album coming out. but surprised to see he's still at it; persistence is worth something.

akm, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 19:03 (four years ago) link

and also I think that rumor was false

akm, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 19:06 (four years ago) link

Longwave are a good band but not an exceptional one. I like Steve Schiltz's voice and the music is interesting and never just straight ahead indie rock. But they lack deep hooks - I loved them most around '02. They're not a regular play in my world but I dig them when I feel that particular itch.

Thread revive has set me off to listen to 'The Strangest Things' - I never heard anything else they did.

Was besotted with "Wake Me When It's Over" at the time.

michaellambert, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

i remember thinking all of his lyrics were pretty unremarkable, but that he did have an ear for some really pleasant chord progressions.

i was also very into red hot chili peppers by the way at the time and thought that they had a lot in common.

Tidal Wave is a great song and a totally underrated 00’s Indie Rock track,
