Slight off topic he worked a lot with Adele Bertei who had a great single (build me a bridge ?) anyone know what happened to her?

BTW Golden Age of Wireless/Flat earth both excellent. His mad professor/boffin schtick has tainted any serious evaluation of his work so unfortunately he's left in some early 80's novelty ghetto.

Golden Age is a definite classic. The Flat Earth is a fine record too. Great songwriting on both records. Dolby was not a novelty act or one hit wonder;he IS a pop master craftsman.Anyone who would call it novelty just didn't follow his career. Anyone got a copy of Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club from '79 ? I'd love a recording of that. I have recordings of rare early Dolby singles I could CD-r in trade.

Although I can't really understand the appeal of "Hyperactive"...

White Popes on Dunk (Bimble...), Saturday, 13 January 2007 13:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Apart from insane P.Funk key modulations and the uptempo trombone solo and the unrelenting new wave drumbeat and the feeling that anything could happen at any time and the cheap psychedelic video and the jittery twitchy vocal style with anger and anxiety and humor all up underneath the surface? And the three different indelible hooks?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 13 January 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

The only problem with "Hyperactive" as far as I'm concerned is that the 12" version is much better than the album version if only just for having a proper ending instead of an anticlimactic fade out.

Oh my god,

FLYING NORTH

just kills me.

When I first heard that, circa
'86 I played it over and over and over and over. I had it on the same tape off the radio on which I discovered XTC for the first time.

I'd forgotten that I have actually heard the whole of Golden Age of Wireless...

"Cloudburst At Shingle Street" was fucking amazing to hear again. I could play that one a few times in a row.

But "Flying North" is king.

You know, I must say I'm terribly confused about why I dissed "Hyperactive" above. Makes no sense to me. I actually do like that song, and I liked it at the time it came out, enough to buy the 45. So man, I don't know why I dissed it. I have no clue.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't want to be alone. Doesn't anyone care about Thomas Dolby? I just found all these early b-sides and stuff I've never heard before. Wow. I also got the Wireless video thing of him performing live and so many people have out-of-date clothes in the audience, it's great.

And wow what is this thing he did with Sakamoto called "Field Work? Wow!

I also remember the Dolby's Cube release but I don't remember how good or bad it was. I'd completely forgotten about it. I don't think I ever bought that. I don't know what to expect.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 28 January 2007 08:00 (seventeen years ago) link

(i just remembered one of my 8th-grade teachers asking me what "bye bye empire empire bye bye" scrawled on one of my notebooks meant.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 28 January 2007 08:05 (seventeen years ago) link

HahHAHAHAHA! That is one of my favourite melodic lines of his! "Bye Bye Empire Bye Bye..." actually things got even weirder after that because I suddenly realized I liked Killing Joke's "Empire Song" during the same weekend, but never mind. That's where they sing "Another empire/back fire!" Something like that.

Anyway I love you all for even posting about Thomas Dolby. Bless you. I've really got the Dolby bug. And just you wait til I hear the whole of this collaboration he did with Ryuchi Sakamoto called Field Work, now that is something else!

Lick The Strobelight Lollipops (Bimble...), Sunday, 28 January 2007 08:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Has anyone here heard the early Thomas Dolby instrumental "The Wreck of the Fairchild"? Oh my GOD. I mean OH MY GOD. I wish there was a YouTube video for it but I bet there isn't because god hates me, etc.

I have the Dolby's Cube 12" somewhere. Haven't played it since the 80s probably; I ought to dig it out. I remember it sounding uncommonly druggy and dubby.

"One Of Our Submarines" is based on the true story of Dolby's ... uncle, right?

I want to hear more B-sides.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Hell yes. I saw him in Boston last year doing his one-man band thing and it was fantastic. Except for the jokey songs off _Aliens Ate My Buick_, those are kinda embarassing (especially "Hot Sauce").

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Go.

The Joe's Pub show last year was totally great. And the only songs he did off his crap albums were the good ones "I Live In A Suitcase", "Budapest By Blimp".

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

You're confused about something. _Aliens Ate My Buick_ is indeed a mixed bag but has it's very high points ("Budapest By Blimp") as you noted. But _Astronauts & Heretics_ is very strong - great songwriting, memorable tunes and no attempt at hits.

Given that he assisted in the deluxe reissue of Prefab Sprout's _Steve McQueen_, when will _The Golden Age of Wireless_ get proper treatment? Has to be a WHEN, not an IF, but I haven't read any word on a reissue.

moley, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link

John Foxx's 'Endlessly' (the original single mix) is the best song Thomas Dolby never wrote. That kind of sequential drum-driven romantic synth psychedelia sound, unconventional in lyrical approach, and liberal with cinematic sound effects, but still firmly based around classic pop song melodies and structures, was an early 80's thing. We haven't really had much of it since then?

moley, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:12 (sixteen years ago) link

no we haven't. sigh.

cutty, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

For a period of like, 4 years I was under the impression that Thomas Dolby, sometime in the late 80's or so had committed suicide by jumping off a building. Only like 8 months ago did I find out that he is actually alive.

i checked with EMI about this story, as i too cant believe with all the current love for 80s electro, that they haven't got on the case. the response was that there must be problems with some of the legal side of things.
in other words, if the label could have sorted out a reissue campaign, they would have.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

It was "set for early 2011" but now I'm hearing it's going to come out in the summer. I'm not at all surprised if it turns out to be good, he only really made one album that wasn't good, and he wasn't even really trying on that one (Aliens Ate My Buick). I'm guessing that it's going to be very similar to the Flat Earth. I always thought that many of the songs he wrote sort of went beyond his years so now that he's 50 I expect really good things out of him.

New online game to coincide with the upcoming album: A Map of the Floating City. You float around the ocean, trying to trade found objects with other players, and when you complete a set, you win an mp3. So far I've only gotten "She Blinded Me With Science" (yay?), but I think if you stick with it, you eventually start winning new tracks.

album arrived yesterday - after an initial listen I can say that it's got a really great sound to it, and you can tell that he labored over everything on it. reminds me a lot of The Flat Earth (its a bit longer, but still), there's really no compromise on here at all, and besides that track posted above there's really nothing electronic on it.

Anyone go for the 2cd version? There's a few unique tracks after the (pointless) instrumentals.

I don't know if everyone else is already familiar with this, but I heard it for the first time today and it's my new favourite thing, something about the combination between the jittery, anxious feel of the music, even with the lyrics removed, and then the authoritative, equanimous but still robust character of Angela Rippon's voice
