The entire first album. Alternately, the entire second album.

I KNEW someone was gonna pull that. But then you're ignoring all the awesome b-sides!

Actually, out of curiousity. Which is better, Pinkerton or the Blue Album? Personally, it depends on my self-opinion at the time of listening as to whether the cutesypoo woo-woo's or the near monotonous all-girls-are-better-than-me self loathing sounds more like filler.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 June 2003 01:09 (twenty years ago) link

Which is better? Really depends on your mood. I like the rougher production of the second though.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 20 June 2003 01:14 (twenty years ago) link

I usually do too, but the Ocasek sheen on songs like "No One Else" and "Only In Dreams" do a really good job of replicating some kind of high school hormones a'tizzy gorgeousness. These days I'm tempted to say the Blue album is better, which is ironic, cuz I used to think "In The Garage" and "Holiday" flat out sucked. I don't now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 June 2003 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

I refuse to like a band that starts a song with "Goddam you half japanese..."

5. only in dreams

I refuse to like a band that starts a song with "Goddam you half japanese..."

The gist of that line is anything but hateful.

Goddamn you half-Japanese girls
Do it to me every time
Oh, the redhead said you shred the cello
And I'm jello, baby
But you won't talk, won't look, won't think of me
I'm the epitome of public enemy
Why you wanna go and do me like that?
Come down on the street and dance with me

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:07 (twenty years ago) link

Across the Sea
My Name is Jonas
The World Has Turned and Left Me Here
Undone (the Sweater Song)
Saturday Night
You Gave Your Love To Me Softly
Tired of Sex
Holiday

...and two of the album #5 demos, the names of which I no longer remember.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:28 (twenty years ago) link

The entire first album. Alternately, the entire second album.

I totally agree.

I KNEW someone was gonna pull that. But then you're ignoring all the awesome b-sides!

The Island In The Sun single had a nice b-side on it, Oh Lisa or something like that.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:33 (twenty years ago) link

I guess I'd get rid of "Across the Sea" and put in "Janie". The first album is perfect.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 20 June 2003 05:10 (twenty years ago) link

Pinkerton = Pet Sounds?

Discuss.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 05:27 (twenty years ago) link

what, written by a madman?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 20 June 2003 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

please throw in some arguments Kenan, I have no clue as to why you would come up with that comparison.

Never mind. 1500 expository words coming soon to a website near you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'm glad someone else remembers Friends of P, that's a good song.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, but its not technically weezer
since matt sharp was quite obviously the heart and soul of that band, i decided to include the rentals in my list

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

I know, which is why I didn't list it myself...I'm just so pleased because I thought I was the only one who remembered that song. Which would be very unfortunate if it was the case.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

Picking ten is very hard:

Across the Sea
El Scorcho
Susanne
Mykel and Carli
My Name is Jonas
The Good Life
Say It Ain't So
The World Has Turned...
Island in the Sun
Longtime Sunshine download this. it's a not-officially released song, written right before the blue album was recorded. absolutely gorgeous

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:27 (twenty years ago) link

pinkerton is the astral weeks of the 90s

except, y'know, good

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

ally, it's not just that song that rocks, that entire rentals debut is full of classics. they were a weezer version of the faint back when the faint were a whiny emo band.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:32 (twenty years ago) link

i am a bit sad the "pinketron" meme has seemed to have died out

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

rentals are not good.

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

i am a bit sad the "pinkerton" meme has seemed to have died out

Ok, in brief sketches. Both Pinkerton and Pet Sounds are written from the first person point POV of someone who's making the changeover from adolescence to adulthood, and a little late at that, and both albums are about growing via the pain of romantic relationships. "Why Bother" is a not-too-distant cousin of "Here Today," and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is not at all far away from "I wish I could get my head out of the sand 'cuz I think we'd make a good team / and you would keep my fingernails clean / but that's just a stupid dream that I won't realize."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, maybe I should have picked "Love Explosion" over "Holiday"...

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

keenan you need to read harder and hit the archives

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:18 (twenty years ago) link

read what harder?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:18 (twenty years ago) link

pinketRon

also, i dunno what that has to do with pet sounds

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

I'm desperately lost and embarassed because apparently I'm only repeating old threads, and I'm going away now.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:23 (twenty years ago) link

heh, no no...sigh...i'm sorry, my first reply came off snippier than intended (shockah)

"pinketron" was a misspelling that became a minor ilm meme for a while, but now apparently has died out, which sadden me (jess in nostalgia shockah)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

haha jess no don't you see he CORRECTED your joke and made it FUNNIER well not really.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

I thought it was pretty funny that he corrected it and then responded to it in such a serious fashion.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

well funny is funny you're right about that.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

Ok dammit, I didn't want to do this but here we go:
Tired of Sex
Jamie
World Has Turned...
Pink Triangle
Only in Dreams
No One Else
In the Garage
Buddy Holly
Getchoo
and I can't think of a tenth, so Tired of Sex again.

did anyone download Longtime Sunshine? Anyone have comments either way about it?

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:00 (twenty years ago) link

I can't download it til I get home. You're Rivers Cuomo, aren't you?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

I'm so happy I amuse you all.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

bahaha. i wish

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

I've got Longtime Sunshine and Blast Off mp3s at home (downloaded them before I graduated from college). They're both great, beautiful songs (Blast Off sounds kind of like El Scorcho but has a great computer voice in the middle of it. It would have been the first song off their sci-fi epic "Songs From The Black Hole").

Friends Of P is dandy, but I must admit I prefer "The Love I'm Searching For" and "Waiting" off of the first Rentals album. My pal Theodore Fogelsanger loves the second Rentals album, but I confess only "The Cruise" excited me much on that. My sister saw a Matt Sharp show recently and said it was fun. I'm kinda pissed that evidently Rivers implied Matt Sharp would be let back in the band when Mikey Walsh left, and then got so excited about Scott Shriner that he wouldn't let his second banana back in the group, which SUCKS!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

i think he and matt had talked about matt beng in the video for Island in the Sun (the 2nd one), but they ultimately decided not to do it.

There's a GREAT version "Please Let That Be You" at mattsharp.net - it's an older version that is arranged in large part by rivers. i never noticed the song on ROTR; this version though is really nice though.

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:07 (twenty years ago) link

the songwriting on all of ROTR is fine, but the performances tend to be kind of sluggish after Friends of P.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:19 (twenty years ago) link

what is everyone expecting of their 5th record?

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:44 (twenty years ago) link

I'd guess that the next Weezer album will be a bunch of pop rock tunes, and that about half of them will be brilliant pop tunes, and the rest will just be sort of okay.

You know, pretty much the same thing as the last four albums.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 21 June 2003 03:44 (twenty years ago) link

thing is, it was supposed to come out MONTHS ago, and then the website stopped posting updates and there was an article on mtv.com about Rivers wanting to make an album of acoustic and orchestral versions of previous Weezer classics.

best case scenario: Rivers realized he's basically reading the phone book over the great riffs he writes as often as he farts and has decided to just STOP for a second and rediscover his lyrical muse by rediscovering his best songs.

worst case scenario: he's making a stop-gap album so that the audience doesn't realize he's reading the phone book over great riffs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 June 2003 16:25 (twenty years ago) link

You're really that impressed by his riffs?

I think his vocal melodies are what carry the band, the actual musical arrangements aren't nearly as exciting to me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

you could replace the word "riffs" with vocal melodies if you like (or we can just settle on the word "hooks"). It's the lyrics that clearly went down the crapper since "Pinkerton."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 June 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

Anthony Miccio is right about how the performances sound sluggish on Return of the Rentals except for Friend of P. They almost sound asleep! But the second album of the Rentals is much much better. On that one, everyone sounds excited.

Applepie Baseball, Saturday, 21 June 2003 19:27 (twenty years ago) link

Just all of PINKETRON is all you need.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

The second Rentals album is really quite nice.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

the second rentals record tries to make good songs out of poor songs through loads of "production"

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Saturday, 21 June 2003 22:54 (twenty years ago) link

jel, I do love you so.

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 22 June 2003 00:43 (twenty years ago) link

shit, take off Waiting on You and put on No One Else from my list. This is the greatest song ever. This thread made me drag out all my Weezer stuff, I wanted to let you all know.

awesome!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 22:09 (twenty years ago) link

Haha like it wasn't sitting on the top of my stack of CDs. I "drag out the Weezer" like three times a week. It's my secret band obsession.

good interview with Rivers today on marc maron

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Monday, 29 September 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

Maron ruined it for me. Seemed to be pushing the Rivers is crazy angle pretty hard and in turn Rivers clammed up.

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, imo Maron had imagined some kind of weird narrative for Cuomo's life that didn't fit (and was full of things I don't remember ever hearing about). But enh...didn't have a lot invested in this episode anyway.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:42 (nine years ago) link

Rivers supposedly spent a long time (post Pinkertown) just bouncing a ball against the wall in an apartment where all the walls and windows were painted black. He's also done plenty of weird songwriting experiments over the years, but if that's the angle Maron wanted to go he shouldn't have framed it as "remember when you were insane and did these weird things?"

DavidLeeRoth, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:50 (nine years ago) link

as usual he didn't do his research, which i expected, given that i thought it was pretty good. i knew he wasn't going to be asking about songs from the black hole or something
