Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat (Larry Levan 12" Mix)" are tied for no. 1 for me. First 30 secs of J5 is as dramatic a splash of cold water on a hot day as you can hope for. Taana: 8 bars of heartbeats, 8 more of handclaps, then the BADDEST- ASSED DRUM INTRO EVER comes in, followed by the second-best bassline ever (after Chic's "Good Times"). Wow.

Good intro, not such a great song: two examples on 'Help!' spring to mind - 'It's Only Love' and 'I've Just Seen A Face'

I've always like the intro of Jane's Addiction's 'Stop' with the Spanish-speaking girl before she introduces the band.

The intro to Pavement's 'We Are Underused' is one of my favourites too.

1) BJM stealing the openning of Dandy Warhols Come Down for their leadoff song on Give It Back (SuperSonic) claiming it was Courtney Taylor whole stole it from him/them all along.

2) Misunderstood from Wilco's Being There just for it being so not alt. country. Even though I dont know where alt country starts or ends or fully understand what makes people point and say thats alt. country, that intro is defently not it.

3) Eric's Trip 4 songs sorta mashed into one with a wierd wubwubwub bass sound that opens Purple Blue.

4) Great intro to a great song in Leave Them All Behind, heck almost ever Ride song I can think of has a great intro. Perfectly timed for getting out of the shower to out the door in the morning.

5) The Church - "Almost With You" which starts off the 2nd side of Blur(ed) Crusade where the guy gets up answers the knock at a door and the door swings open to the song.

Great jungle intros: who's up for it???

For now I am simply going to mention that Chuck D (from whence came "if y'all REALLY like to rock the funky beats") and P.E. have many great intros, especially FIght the Power, where somebody (Farrakhan?) starts it off -

"Yet our best-trained, best-educated, best-equipped, best- prepared troops refuse to fight. Matter of fact, it's safe to say, they would rather switch than fight."

The 2-girl dialogue for 'Baby Got Back' is absolutely hysterical... Intro's that involve dialogue are great framing for a lotta funny r&b, rap and hiphop tunes, but i always wonder if they yank it out for airplay?

Quite right, Nick. I was watching a gig by a very terrible band a few months ago, and they began their last song with a sort of familiar-sounding synth progression ... and then that bass line kicked in, and half the bar broke into broad grins. Despite nearly an hour of sucking horribly, everyone was on their side again.

Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, the cover wasn't that good either.
