sounds good neil - is it soulseekable?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:02 (twenty years ago) link

Quite enjoying Hatcha's Dubstep mix out on Tempa soon, in a skunked-out stoner Garage kinda way...
Also The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back by Dan Bell On Logistic has rocked my world lately...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:15 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah I'm big into the DJ Hell one myself.

Toby you might like Hooj Presents Le Future Le Funk, as recommended to me by Tim F.

Not a DJ mix but a great compilation is the Kitsune records "Kitsune Love" compilation. It's all french stuff, a brilliant new Alan Braxe and Fred Falke tune which I love at the moment. It's really good.

I'd been meaning to get the Ivan Smagghe thing while I was in London, it might be tougher finding it here.

I love the Lu Cont mix, particularly the Cosmos remix of Zoot Woman.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

where the hell is my Lu Cont mix? this is what happens when you order it from a website operating out of the fucking Channel Islands, ptcha

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

you loving that Braxe/Falke tune eh Ronan? i do like it but it can't compare with 'Penthouse Serenade', 'Running' or 'Intro' really.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

My recent faves:

jacques le cont - fabric live
dfa - colette
triple r - friends
dj language vs. negroclash

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Penthouse Serenade was pretty lame Steve, I think I am a sucker for the So Much Love To Give style of the new Braxe/Falke tune.

When is the DFA Colette thing out?

I'm loving the Output compilation too and also Digital Disco which I got in London fortunately.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:17 (twenty years ago) link

Colette's already out, Ronan. But it's hella-expensive.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

The !K7 mix by Ghost Cauldron I started a thread on - the more I listen the more I love!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:20 (twenty years ago) link

Miss Kittin - Radio Caroline
Radioactive Man - Fabric
Slam - Fabric
that DFA Muzik thingy
Weatherall - From The Bunker

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

How's the Slam Fabric Omar? I was tempted but read alot of poor reviews, that said I've always been into them when I saw them DJ.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

Thomas Brinkmann, Urus Martan is banging and funky.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:55 (twenty years ago) link

I could take or leave the Lu Cont mix (srry). Maybe it will grow on me though.

Seconding Bis Neun and fifthing Friends. I hated Friends the first few times, but it's a grower. The amazing selection of tunes more than makes up for the lackluster mixing. Swoon...

The Colette DFA mix is fantastic, too.

So aside from what's already been recommended, I can add:

Luciano - Live @ Weetamix

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:16 (twenty years ago) link

How's the Slam Fabric

It does the job so to speak. Nothing revolutionary (this sort of tech-house never changes, or indeed has to change). It ends with U.R.'s 'Inspiration', which of course is a beautiful thing.

I'm also getting into Speicher.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:30 (twenty years ago) link

tiga - dj kicks (fantastic, one of my top albums of 2003)

Thank you toby, I thought I was going mad and had imagined this. Definitely a top album of 2003, are the last two tracks, the Martini Bros' "Greatest Fan" and Tiga's take on Felix & Kittin's "Madame Hollywood", the greatest coda ever?

Also the Jacques Lu Cont Fabric mix - h-h-h-h-h-house nation! - and the DFA Muzik mix. What is this Colette thing? Is it available in the UK? I'm enjoying the Radioactive Man Fabric CD but wouldn't particularly recommend it, it's just scratching an itch. Le Future Le Funk is getting better each time I hear it, but it's still a bit "So?". And seconding Ronan for unmixed compilations, the Output and Digital Disco LPs are very necessary indeed.

Two I've just caught up with from last year are Ellen Allien's weiss.mix, a solid gold classic, electronica's greatest hits, and Zed Bias's Bingo Beats Vol 2 - I don't know the territory and I'm sure there are better mixes but this is the one I've heard and I love it.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:05 (twenty years ago) link

My current favorite DJ mix is the one Siegbran offered up here for d/l a couple weeks ago(Electrons, Semen and Blood Mix). RADIO CAROLINE's pretty good, but not as good as the ELECTROCLASH one she did for Muzik Magazine.

I was disappointed with Theo Parrish's CONTEMPORHYTHMS Vol. 1, so much so that I haven't picked up Vol. 2, and I pick up anything with his name on it on sight.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:33 (twenty years ago) link

dunno how old/recent it is, but Fenchbloke and sons "We are back" is bloody good.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:46 (twenty years ago) link

i put bingo beats 2 in my pazz & jop top 10 last year, although i can't for the life of me remember why. it's really quite good tho, except for the latter 1/3 which kinda drags.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 May 2003 00:49 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks Jeff...it's still downloadable here by the way (70 MB).

Lately I've been listening more to livesets than to mixed cd's, but I I'm playing Adam Beyer's Timewarp 3 CD a lot.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:11 (twenty years ago) link

I just got the soundmurderer mix, "wired for sound". It has absolutely no flow. I mean, NO FLOW. Oh well, it only cost $8.49.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 2 May 2003 08:35 (twenty years ago) link

i just put up some of my recent mixes here, all pretty casual stuff but nice to listen to as there's some great tunes in there

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:47 (twenty years ago) link

oop, you actually need to go here specifically

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 11:48 (twenty years ago) link

I like the lounge mix!

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:22 (twenty years ago) link

i like Siegbran

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 May 2003 12:23 (twenty years ago) link

Tiga's take on Felix & Kittin's "Madame Hollywood

utter, utter crap. Ruins the album for me, it's like a tumor beating inside your head "yeah its fine now but the pain will come at the end." He shouldn't have messed with perfection.

Mmm, I was actually looking forward to that SoundMurderer mix. :(

Omar (Omar), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

I was kind of disappointed in Soundmurderer too... tho I need to listen to it more and I do think it was pretty decent, nice to hear those tunes again... but the problem is it's one long rinse-out.

On the other hand, this Brinkmann thing just grows and grows. Best techno mix I've heard since Mayday (OK, I don't listen to techno much anymore, but still), it has it all--abstract bits, jazzy bits, housey bits, intense bits, mellow bits, full-on machine bits... and great peaks and valleys too. Brilliant.

Ben Williams, Friday, 2 May 2003 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Oh no, by all means go grab the Soundmurderer mix. It's super cheap anyway and it's not half bad. I don't think it's better than the History Of Hardcore / History of Our World comps, though. It's like, why sixty tracks? I'd have been happy hearing the first third of the mix stretched to eighty minutes. But I think it really ends up sounding like drill n' bass, esp. since a lot of the tracks were looted by Dj Scud and Panacea and so on.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 2 May 2003 20:08 (twenty years ago) link

y'all go here and tell me what to download, alright?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 3 May 2003 11:49 (twenty years ago) link

also, if someone hosts that hooj mix, i will kiss that person. as in "[person x hosting hooj mix], i kiss you". no fooling.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 3 May 2003 11:56 (twenty years ago) link

I have not bogut mixes for a awhile. I really want the new Dan Bell, as the first one of my favorites of all time.

I bought Tiga DJ kicks, Hell electrobodymusic, and Hawtin's DE9 today, and I have listened to DE9 and am listening to Tiga now. DE9 still soudsn great (had heard it numerous times before) and Tiga is fun so far...

i just bought dj hell`s electronicbody-housemusic and ive been blown away, how good is this ebm mix nitzer ebb and front 242 havent sounded so fresh mixed with green velvet and other electrotechbooty-music so come on people "join in the chant"

raymie smith, Friday, 17 October 2003 11:06 (twenty years ago) link

also been thinking about getting that Hell mix

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:07 (twenty years ago) link

i've got the princess superstar "DJs are not rockstars" on my MD. I'm not that familiar with current DJ mixes so it's hard for me to complain, but there is a real feeling of wanting to be the next 2manydjs about it. it's good, a bit cacophanous in places, but it suffers from (to me) over-familiarity of the set. The mash-up/extreme mixes work quite well - rapping over Vitalic grebt - but others seem a strain. Dropping into the Grease number seems too self-consciously like "and now the naff track for yous all to laff at".

check out these mixes

rapping over Vitalic grebt

How original...

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

well, Siegbran, i suppose it's not going to impress you that they use jj fad's supersonic, electroclash's #1 most overplayed tune

vahid (vahid), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:57 (twenty years ago) link

check out these mixes also

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, no it's a bit of a joke...I thought I might have been the first who layered a rap acapella over a Vitalic track last year with my dizzee/vitalic boot, but somebody else must've done it earlier at some point, really.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 17 October 2003 21:46 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, well they start out with a loop of the Khia chorus (my neck, my back) and drop Vitalic in under it, then add "supersonic" which actually sounds pretty great but you kinda wish they'd just stuck with Khia and let her rap.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 17 October 2003 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

the daniel bell mix on logistic is awesome return of the button down mind

tobias thomas - smallville is good

iffy beatmatching going into that skyy song but nonetheless

I've been enjoying this mix lately:
http://www.erikxvi.eu/2010/08/14/the-fading-splendour-of-a-technological-future/ (direct link to mp3, since it's a bit hard to find on the host's page)

slow-motion 90s techno. Give it a while, it gets pretty immense.

(considers posting to the "chopped & screwed" thread but I guess heads may feel misled since there's no hip hop)

really stunning mix from Lamin Fofana, hyper-clean nu-acid dirtied up and complicated with some found sound and effects. very little in the way of beat matching. each track stands on its own. great interview too.
