Favorite anecdote about the Butthole Surfers: they drive to Athens, GA on tour and park on Stipe's lawn, and spraypaint on the side of their van:

"MICHAEL STIPE - DESPITE ALL THE HYPE - WE'D STILL LIKE TO SUCK - YOUR BIG LONG PIPE!"

I heard he has a tail like a scorpion and that he can see in the dark.

BEST STIPE INTERVIEW EVAH

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow! It's an honest, unguarded fantastically queer Stipe interview. Quite something to see.
This is half lies, but it sure is funny...

http://www.keepmedia.com/pubs/Esquire/2001/06/01/138749?from=search&criteria=Tom+Junod&resultsPage=5

There was probably a big ILM thread about Tom Junod's piece a couple of years back, but what the hell.

Stipe was on ITV2's 'Orange Playlist' yesterday, a show in which Lauren Laverne asks pop stars to select some of their favourite songs.

He chose..

'Video Killed The Radio Star'
'Beautiful Girl' - INXS (eulogizing about how Hutchence was one of the all time greats)
'99 Problems'
'Pyramid Song'

I was not impressed.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

'Beautiful Girl' - INXS

this says everything about why Stipe sucks these days. REM=AIR SUPPLY

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i like air supply

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THEIR NEW AIR SUPPLY-LIKE ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REM interpreting Jim Steinman songs?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 October 2004 23:17 (nineteen years ago) link

did you guys dig Reveal? If so you'll love the new one.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 October 2004 23:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it was good.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 3 October 2004 23:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm happy that you're happy.

Ned, Jim Steinman would be outraged by the lack of drama on these tracks.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

you cheeky monkeys

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 4 October 2004 00:21 (nineteen years ago) link

This will be the first REM album I'm not gonna buy. It's quite a big thing for me, considering how much I loved them and will still defend their finest moments against indie snobs. I even bought Reveal, having been lulled into a false sense of excitment by the gorgeous piano "demo" version of Beat A Drum on the Imitation of Life single. How annoying then, that the album version smothered the melody and melancholy in gloopy Brian Wilson 80s solo album redux production.
But Leaving New York is just REM by numbers. It's okay, but only in the way it reminds you of better REM songs.
Clearly losing Bill Berry has left them wondering who they are.
I think they also wanna still compete with U2 - Bongo actually told them to keep up the competition. They should realise they've always been better than those mooks. Well, up to now at least.

stew s, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:36 (nineteen years ago) link

They lost me with UP. I was pretty diehard before that.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:41 (nineteen years ago) link

stipe is either boringly dignified or boringly undignified these days, depending on my mood

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I really liked Up. It took a few listens, but along with Beck's Mutations, will always remind me of sitting in my room in my first year at uni. (Sorry, that sounds terribly depressive, which isn't really the case)
It's patchy for sure, but at least they were taking risks. But the fact it flopped has meant they're playing it safe from now on. Boo!

stew s, Monday, 4 October 2004 11:10 (nineteen years ago) link

"Up" was a pretty good record, it actually felt kinda new postBerry, don't know why they gave up

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:26 (nineteen years ago) link

"The Great Beyond" was a good single. I'll say that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:32 (nineteen years ago) link

it's interesting - the common truism goes that diehard fans have tuned out somewhere around Out of Time - but I see that a lot of us made it to Up. I've been raving how great New Adventures in Hi-Fi is on another recent thread and I think a lot of us agree on this one... But yeah, Up was the first REM album I didn't buy at one of those embarrassing Monday midnight sales, Reveal was the first I didn't listen to all the way through right after buying, and Around the Sun will be the first one I won't buy at all.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd pick any of them up CHEAP, but I'm too nice.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:07 (nineteen years ago) link

FUCK THE DANCING OLD MAN (either one; it ain't my dick)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:57 (nineteen years ago) link

All the hate simmering for this album's enticing me to buy. I remember the days when listening to REM would get you branded a geek, someone who proudly didn't relate to the haters. Now maybe it gets you branded out of touch (and what else is a geek?), maybe someone who shrugs at the clever hipster police.

bill berry, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, the politics of listening. It doesn't brand you anything; R.E.M. were a great band and they're heading toward mediocre, and there's nothing political or strategic about acknowledging this beyond-obvious fact.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, sure, not that familiarity breeds contempt or anything.

bill berry, Monday, 4 October 2004 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

As rock stars go, he's had fewer embarrassing moments than most (which gives you an idea of the size of that curve).

And in the '80s, he was even cute.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:27 (nineteen years ago) link

The new record pretty much destroys the last two by the way.

I love REM and for a while in my teens they were my favourite band but I refuse to believe that anyone was craving a Michael Stipe solo record.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 October 2019 06:15 (four years ago) link

This isn't terrible, but it's kinda lame.

I always remeber back when they got the VMA Video Vanguard Award in 1995, I think. One of the clips showed the four of them sitting on a couch and Stipe saying "if any of the four guys stood up and left the couch, we would not be R.E.M. anymore". Which ended up being so prescient; the moment Berry left the band, they were never, never the same again.

cpl593H, Wednesday, 9 October 2019 11:05 (four years ago) link

Funny, that, because after Berry left he said the exact opposite. He was quoted as saying "a three-legged dog is still a dog. It just has to learn how to walk differently."

Studio period after Berry quit included some of their best songs and then they picked a great drummer in Bill Rieflin and became a tight band again in that fun period covering the last couple of albums.

timellison, Wednesday, 9 October 2019 14:06 (four years ago) link

one year passes...

That is a good one!

But fuck, I'm not sure if it says more about me or the state of the world right now that I got reallllll nervous for a hot second seeing tow Stipe/R.E.M. threads bumped right in a row. Imagine my relief when I scrolled down to the bottom of each.
