there's really nothing like the vashti bunyan album. she has a unique voice, and despite having a house full of folk/psych records i can't think of anything that sounds like her.

I only have her cover of the Stones' Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind. It's on the Decca compilation The Girls' Scene, which is great. It's v.pop but it doesn't surprise me that she did more folky stuff.

David Moore was raving to me about Jackson C. Frank. I just listened to Fairport Convention's cover of You Never Wanted Me. He also gave me Nick Drake's Tanworth in Arden demos, which includes JCF's Here Comes The Blues. V.cunning.

Love Vashti. That close-mic'ed sound really gets me. Very unique indeed - but certainly not far from the Caterbury / Pentangle / Shirley & Dolly side of things. Still, great.

It is a sad story.

vashti's version of "some things just stick in your mind" seems very incongruous after you've heard her album..

There was a Jackson C Frank song in the trailer to the film Brown Bunny that I saw before last night's feature at the indie cinema (Maria Full of Grace, fyi). Does this mean renewed interest in the tragic folkie icon via soundtrack sales? I guess it's doubtful.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, that is "Milk And Honey". Great song, but yeah, that soundtrack ain't gonna sell at all.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought the trailer was pretty cool, though. And I love that song.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree on both counts.

I just got interested in this guy after hearing "Dialogue" in Electroma, so yeah. I'm guessing the 2xCD version of Blues Run the Game on Castle is the one to get?

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 02:08 (sixteen years ago) link

yes. you won't be disappointed. (i've never actually heard the second cd).

the juxtaposition of that song in electroma was even more pertinent because of his life story (being burned - robots burning etc)

The Brown Bunny soundtrack CD goes for about £150 used these days! (I expect it's because the five Frusciante tracks on it have never appeared anywhere else).

I got a 'digitally remastered' 2001 CD of the Jackson C. Frank album (not the double disc), on Castle/Sanctuary Records, and the sound seems pretty seriously off - some majorly distorted peaks when he sings a little louder.

Does anyone have the double disc? Is the issue there on all versions of this album?

Walter Galt, Thursday, 7 March 2013 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

Huh. Just digging around (which I should have done before one-clicking the frigging thing), both the version I bought and the two disc version are on Castle/Sanctuary, but even listening to the samples on Amazon's site the two disc one sounds better.

Delayed, but I finally got said biography (having gotten the 3 CD set at the time). It's a hair choppy at points -- as with so many books these days, it really needed a stronger editorial once-over to prevent repetition and how some things are mentioned briefly and then only explained in full much later. But given Jim Abbott's role as the guy who essentially got him out of the weird hell he was in in NYC for a decade, and then his role as legal guardian in the final years of Frank's life, probably he's the only person who had both the connection to the subject as well as just enough distance in turn.

The role of Paul Simon in Frank's life as detailed in the book is truly headscratching at points. (As is Art Garfunkel's.)

John Hawkes does a cover of that in Martha Marcy May Marlene and I remember thinking "oh no, you should not be touching this song."

Liked that movie, including Hawkes’ playing and singing. But yeah, agree they could have dropped doing that one (can’t actually remember he played exactly that song).

According to Wikipedia, Jackson C. Frank had two children with model Elaine Sedgwick. The son died and the daughter's name is Angeline. What's known of her? Are royalties passed to his daughter, is his estate now hers? Jackson's music has recently been covered by well-known acts (Chromatics, Daft Punk, TV Series This Is Us...). I'm just wondering if the awful luck of this great man can be somehow compensated by his daughter at least receiving what he never got during his lifetime.

I heard a really good podcast interview with Vashti about a month ago. Think it was C86.
Left me wondering if her son was the motorbike riding chainsaw juggler with cirque de soleil who needed to be replaced or deputised when a friend was in the Edinburgh festival office looking for a job. But not sure of timeline. Seems to be what he was doing at one point anyway.

Stevo, Sunday, 30 April 2023 19:46 (eleven months ago) link

if her son was the what?

W E F L Y T O G E T H E R (Austin), Sunday, 30 April 2023 20:04 (eleven months ago) link

a performing role in a Canadian visual circus he was in. He had apparently been an automotive mechanical whizz from a very early age. I think Vashti gave more of an indication that it might have been him which was a story I'd heard back at the time I was in Edinburgh prior tp coming to Ireland for the first time with a couple of people I knew there that summer. Think this other persoin came back to the crashpad and told us about this on the same day it had happened. Him looking for a way to make a couple of quid and maybe get into a show and turning down this role.

Stevo, Sunday, 30 April 2023 20:11 (eleven months ago) link

well when vashti is your mum, i suppose such things just... are.

I do love the Sanctuary set of Jackson C Frank recordings since it had later material included. First lp is pretty classic but I think the early 70s stuff may have been more desolate. NOt listened to it in a while but I think I found it pretty moving at the time I got the set.
But that first lp is pretty necessary if one hasn't heard it.

He dated Sandy Denny in the mid 60s and bits of North Star Grassman are about him, which I assume is already known
