In american offices, this is the time the inevitable birthday party occurs, followed by a "surprise" rush of work right before you're supposed to leave.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

We leave birthday parties until 430 - that way we waste the last hour of work time.

In my work I read a lot of psychiatric reports, and low energy in the afternoon is associated with bipolar disorder (the new name for manic depression). Not to say everyone with low energy is bipolar, just putting forth an interesting tidbit.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I've found that regular exercise helps boost worktime energy levels appreciably.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I think low energy in the afternoon for me is mainly related to having had to get up early and spend hours in work.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Every day I get this. The bigger the lunch, the worse the lethargy. At about 4 I feel almost comatose and am obliged to have a coffee just to see out the rest of the day. Right now I feel woozy, almost drunk, and I only had falafel.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh an a K in the pool of an evening.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Markelby ate a falafel and now he feel awful.

I blame flourescent lighting, though.

JBR:

Try boiled soybeans for a snack.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:17 (nineteen years ago) link

it doesn't seem to have anything to do with low blood sugar or caffeine withdrawal (i had lunch and a large diet coke a couple of hours ago).

It's probably got everything to do with it then. If you eat a reasonable lunch [and Diet Coke], then nothing for 2-3 hours, your body's all over the place.

Try grazing, i.e. have a snack at 12 and another snack at 2.

is that a snack or a punishment?

motown modown (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Fatigue is one of the biggest symptoms of dehydration.

xpost: have you been good or bad? jk!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I was gonna say what Adam said too - if I eat a starchy lunch, or have a V or some other sugary drink, it only takes a couple of hours and I'm so wobbly and lightheaded I can't stand up.

That is a bit different to just tiredness though, granted.

I say, avoid starches for lunch, try salads and proteins. And have a midafternoon booster - nuts or dried fruit, a cup of tea perhaps. It always keeps me going.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i do drink a lot of water/liquids already. and my diet's pretty low-sugar (i have to watch).

motown modown (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, it is probably just that natural "body wants a snooze" thing... its a shame we dont follow the siesta routine they do places like Italy and Spain. I can happily have even a half hour nap at about 2pm and it refreshes me greatly.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

i turn into little miss cranky pants if i have an arvo nap

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I usually do if I nap at odd times too, or I get all disoriented.. but not at that essential early afternoon lull point. Its as if the body really wants it. Annoying, when one's working.

The thing I don't get, is my 5pm extreme slump of depression. It might be low blood sugar I dunno, but I always slump bad moodwise at 5pm and don't come back out of it again til about 7, wether I eat, drink, or do nothing. Makes the trip home from work a fucking misery.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i only get sleepy in the afternoon if i have a super big lunch or if i have beer. both of those are pretty rare so it doesn't happen too often.

i am always in a top mood at hometime! your slump would suck arse trayce! poor you

gem (trisk), Friday, 29 October 2004 01:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Its particularly un-nice in winter when it's pitch dark leaving work at 6. Bleh.

i've been listening to a lot of disco lately and read this thread title as "my menergy level in the afternoon..."

...which is pretty low right now, actually

joseph (joseph), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i have a very low energy level in the afternoon! i want to pass out all the time. i'm not sure if i'm dehydrated or bipolar. both are possible.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I save all my running-around errands for the afternoons. Otherwise I turn into Bejeweled-addict zombie Adam.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:28 (eighteen years ago) link

my energy levels seem to drop mainly when i have little to do.

i was completely alone in the office all yesterday and was dozing off (first time ever at work) from about 1pm - all i was doing was browsing the net and watching a movie, and it felt like the longest day ever. i prefer to keep busy for this reason.

Mil (Mil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been trying Ken C's advice of drinking plenty of water in the afternoon - especially, just after lunch. As far as I can tell, it seems to be working.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 06:15 (eighteen years ago) link

If nothing else, it means you have to keep getting up and walking to the toilet!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahah, that's true.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't it all about the blood rushing to your stomach after lunch (and away from your brain?) If you ever go on a time organisation training course, they will teach you how to schedule your envelope-stuffing and photocopying for right after lunch when you can't concentrate on anything more taxing.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:21 (eighteen years ago) link

It's when I do most of my ILX-reading

(apart from lunchtime itself - i'm trying to type around my lunch box right now)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Photocopying means standing up, though. After lunch I like to have several fairly straghtforward deskbound tasks, as anything that remotely taxes me/obliges me to move will just not get done.

In my work I read a lot of psychiatric reports, and low energy in the afternoon is associated with bipolar disorder (the new name for manic depression).

by this assessment, basically everyone in my company and everyone i know is a potential bipolar case.

Correlation <> causation, you know?

I totally get the mid afternoon dip, and I'm bipolar. But is there a causal link? Or even a casual link? I know not.

Coffee and upbeat music on the headphones is my answer.

can't...but I may do a coffee run, come back and listen to The Stooges on Spotify for 15 mins. It doesn't help that what I do involves working in low lit rooms with comfy chairs.
