EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE (1978)
BY ALAN BERNSTEIN
Starring: Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Beverly D’Angelo, Ruth Gordon and Manis as Clyde.
Director: James Fargo
Screenplay By: Gail Gilchriest
Throughout these columns, we have tried to promote both the amazing performances given by pets and also to credit the extraordinary trainers who help these talented creatures bring their magic to the screen. That said, it is not at all surprising after seeing the remarkably mediocre Every Which Way But Loose that there is no credit given for any trainer on this film. Rather, Manis the untalented orangutan who stars as Clyde in Clint
Eastwood’s Every Which Way But Loose is simply noted as being “from Bobby Berosini’s Performing Orangutan Show.
A strange and unfunny comedy about a fighter who hates fighting, but can’t seem to ever stop throwing punches (except for when he’s throwing passes at the dull and vacant Sondra Locke), Clyde in one sense fits in with a cast that appears either embarrassed or stoned (an especially sad note is the wonderful Ruth Gordon cast as a profane and ridiculous harpy of a mother). Clyde’s acting rarely hits the most minimal mark --
appearing natural -- and his constant jumping up and down and shaking his arms in the air brings to mind the painful thespian antics of a pneumatic blonde in a slasher movie.
The real star of the movie, Clint Eastwood, is quite possibly the greatest tough guy ever to star in American films. He has brought life and depth to great roles in films such as Dirty Harry, In the Line of Fire and Unforgiven. However, he is strangely unlikable in this awkward road trip movie. Chased across the western states by a posse of miscreants with black widow tatooes, Clint does little more than serve beers to Clyde and
knock out bad guys (including the police) with his bare hands.
For those so desperate to see a movie with an orangutan that they still want to rent Every Which Way But Loose, it is worth nothing that Clyde is heavily featured in the film. But I must tell you this is the first time in writing these columns that I can recall being anxious for the animal scenes to be over. Only a very young and talented Beverly D’Angelo manages to walk off of this set without looking ridiculous. Clearly Clyde’s antics
must have wowed them at the Bobby Berosini Performing Orangutan Show, but in our video selections we have come to expect better from our animal performers. Watch this one at your own risk.
Clyde is played by Manis. All other animals are uncredited.
No Animal Trainers are credited.
No American Humane Associated disclaimer is provided.

y'know, we really should have a thread devoted to Sondra Locke, and how she wound up in all of Clint's 70's movies, to the point of defining an era for him.
