there's a "that" missing.

You mean that you don't always act 'reasonably'? I didn't mean reasonably as in 'logically'. Or as in 'morally right'. I almost wrote predictably, but that's not quite right either. I might have meant, generally in keeping with the beliefs or principles that you and the other person share.

By the way I think it is perfectly possible that you don't trust yourself. (not you personally obv)

I certainly don't always behave reasonably. My behaviour is not always "generally in keeping with the beliefs or principles" that I hold. Am I just a fuck-up? Am I still allowed to condemn other people for straying from the path?

"a fuck-up", "still allowed" - I don't know. I wasn't making rules. I was speculating. I have been told that I am not very trustworthy, and I'm trying to figure out why not.

Well, Isadora, what have you done? I see deceit in your smile.

I now think that I was trying to define being untrustworthy as 'not living up to other people's expectations' because that would make it their fault as much as mine.

Maybe the real problem is my deceitful smile. I don't know.

eyeball kicks i don't think it's possible for anyone NOT to screw up all the time, or at least once in awhile.

i dont think i trust, hope is a closer description now for what i feel about people and everyday things, a 'hopeful half-expectation' that 'action A will cause reaction B'.
to me, trusting another person implies that i will rely on them to do or be a certain way, and that hasnt worked because people screw up / change their minds / evolve into a different-thinking kind of person than what they were initially.

Trust is over-rated in relationships. You can have a healthy relationship without complete trust. I couldn't trust anyone 100%.

WASHINGTON (AP) — You can take our word for it. Americans don’t trust each other anymore.

We’re not talking about the loss of faith in big institutions such as the government, the church or Wall Street, which fluctuates with events. For four decades, a gut-level ingredient of democracy — trust in the other fellow — has been quietly draining away.

These days, only one-third of Americans say most people can be trusted. Half felt that way in 1972, when the General Social Survey first asked the question.

Forty years later, a record high of nearly two-thirds say “you can’t be too careful” in dealing with people.

An AP-GfK poll conducted last month found that Americans are suspicious of each other in everyday encounters. Less than one-third expressed a lot of trust in clerks who swipe their credit cards, drivers on the road, or people they meet when traveling.

One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
One who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.

I was going to post the above discovery, hidden in a link in this piece about why the US polls were wrong:

Probably due to the 'fear sells' tactic of the mass media.
