Virgil snuck in a good unremarked-upon line in the tabletop ep: “I’ll be back in two gifs,” with a hard g.

Amber solidifies her place as the crew's true Berniebro

warren's pitch of "i'm the good parts of bernie + hillary" is going to drive some people insane

yeah she should take that off her bumper stickers

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Friday, 11 January 2019 16:38 (five years ago) link

Lmao: And what we moved onto was Bernie—our indefatigable, unwavering, incorruptible Bernie! And we very nearly won, despite despicable sabotage from the DNC.

Debate scheduling

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Friday, 11 January 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

No no, it's even better. That sentence includes a link to the Donna Brazile article. Looooooool.

Frederik B, Friday, 11 January 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link

Ya focusing on the dnc's ultimately rather trivial machinations too much absolves all the ordinary schmucks who figured hilary clinton wd be a good presidential candidate lol

Master Humphrey's Cock (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 11 January 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link

she should stick to the advice column tbh

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 11 January 2019 18:30 (five years ago) link

Yeah I'm very much team Bernie as is known but also very much never bought into the "sabotage" narrative. It's not really shocking that an upstart didn't have the backing of party insiders. I think in teh US we don't even really have a good concept of what a political party is in most democracies -- the Democratic party is WAY more up for grabs than most parties.

every time i look at my podcast app and consider listening to chapo the newest episode description is too unappealing for me to bother. last 3 times I've looked it's been an episode discussing aquaman, christmas episode/one of their dumb radio play things, talking about this bernie article with amber.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:31 (five years ago) link

the xmas ep surprised me by being actually funny but they need to stop doing those interminable "tabletop" eps

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:34 (five years ago) link

counterpoint: the latest tabletop two-parter was good not bad, actually, and i say that as someone who couldn’t sit through the previous ones

i don't know who to believe here

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

Counter-counterpoint: the latest one was 2x2.5 hours long and fuck that shit

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 18:48 (five years ago) link

what else am i gonna fill my time with on this interminable march to the grave

I'm definitely noticing a widespread creep lately in podcast length. Lots of folks bumping up against or even crossing the two-hour mark. personally I think one hour should be the cutoff. podcasts that exceed that almost always involve a whole lot of shambling, unfocused bullshit. I know the Chapo guys are doing something aesthetically different from him, but Chris Hayes' podcast never exceeds an hour and he digs in to some pretty cpmplicated shit (e.g. this week's episode on trade).

Mine are 44 mins on average and I plan to keep it that way

what's your podcast? i know i've seen you mention it on here before but I can't recall the name

i like a long podcast myself

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

try Dan Carlin

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

i don't like dan carlin because my BA is in history and i just object to half of the things he says

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

because it's for a layman's audience (or he is just lazy) and he simplifies to an absurd degree

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

heard an episode where he was talking about the frankfurt school and steam was coming out my ears

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

i like a long, rambling podcast because i almost always listen to them in the background or when i'm trying to fall asleep. Chapo & Red Scare are great for naps ime

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:53 (five years ago) link

ha ha I just meant that Carlin always drops 4 hour long podcasts

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:55 (five years ago) link

he's got the length but perhaps not the width

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

Dan Carlin is the worst

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:00 (five years ago) link

I’m finishing up an episode on the mechanics of conspiracy theory that’s just under two hours. I could chop it in half but my release schedule is already highly artitrary so I’m thinking of just posting it whole to let folks enjoy it for a while.

I think this merits a "holy shit"

Update: The red shirt-clad guy is Phil Dershowitz, a biophysics PhD student at Iowa State and a cousin of Alan Dershowitz's. He's a socialist fan of @CHAPOTRAPHOUSE and @PplPolicyProj, and he'll vote for the furthest left candidate in the field. https://t.co/kPEybm0MGZ

also, lol @ The Baffler for having to retract Amber's pro-Bernie tract for being too explicitly partisan

Have p much stopped any regular listening, should probably cancel the patreon at this point. Virgil is too earnest and wonky and makes it feel only a hair away from being just any old political podcast, and the other guys’ schtick feels a bit spent. Also hearing them act dumbfounded by Trump is not rendered more interesting by peppering it with Adam Curtis terms.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 06:31 (five years ago) link

Wait, waht, why would the Baffler feel the need to retract what was a pretty boilerplate left wing op-ed?

I've been enjoying it more as a lefty news digest than anything else, though I've realized I listen for Matt's takes far more than anyone else's. He ended up completely otm on the cov cath shithead with the "shaming era is over" bit

The Baffler, which focuses on left-wing politics and culture, is owned by The Baffler Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it is legally prohibited from endorsing any candidate for public office.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 14:45 (five years ago) link

this looks promising

Sean KB recorded an ep with fellow history nerd, Matt Christman of The Chapo Trap House, who is similarly tyrannized by the weight of dead generations.

The question: Why, of all advanced capitalist countries, is the United States unique in its historical failure to form a bone-fide Labour/Socialist party organically tied to the union movement as an institutionalized political expression of working class interests? The answers may surprise you.
