DON'T PANIC:

re: Free Palin [Mark R. Levin]

I would LOVE to question Katie Couric about her knowledge of the Constitution, let alone Supreme Court decisions.

and

So, I guess, this is all an around and about way of saying that I'm in the Free Sarah Palin camp. I don't mean throw her out there and hope she swims. She needs to be prepared on the substance. But she also needs to be taught techniques to relax, feel calm and grounded, find her center, listen strategically, and take control. Deep breathing exercises, physical and vocal warm ups, can help. Finding that one person in the audience to connect to, or forgetting the audience altogether and having an intimate chat. She needs to find whatever works. And every bit of coaching she gets should be directed toward helping her exude the charm, charisma, and confidence that has gotten her this far.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 2 October 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Somehow Mark Levin as yoga teacher is not filling me with a sense of calm.

Ross Douthat has the best analysis I've read in days:

For those conservatives who claim to see no problems with Palin's performance, of course, this is precisely what's so outrageous about the anti-Palin backlash: She's being judged, they complain, less on her record and her positions than on her ability to BS her way through "gotcha" questions from hostile interviewers, and she's being found wanting because she isn't as practiced in the art of the on-air dodge as more experienced politicians. (Thus Joe Carter's pro-Palin complaint, for instance, that he "cannot make the leap in logic required to believe that proficiency on television is evidence of capable leadership.")

I think this view is wrong for several reasons: Because Palin's relatively limited record in politics magnifies the importance of her public comments for anyone who's trying to get a handle on who this woman is and whether she's ready for high office; because her performance has been so comprehensively lousy that it has to reflect, to some degree, on her knowledge base and her understanding of policy as well as on her TV chops; and because like it or not, "proficiency on television" is simply a prerequisite for capable leadership in a mass democracy. But there's a sense in which the apologists for her performance are getting something right: In the process of performing very, very badly on national television, Palin is holding up a mirror to the rest of the political world, and revealing how the mix of talking points, bluster, obfuscation and BS that nearly all national politicians traffic in as a matter of course sounds when it's filtered through someone who isn't practiced in it, and isn't ready for the spotlight. Her performances reflect badly on her readiness for the vice presidency, no question - but they reflect badly on our whole compromised, spin-happy political class as well.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 2 October 2008 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, whoop-de-fuck. Sarah Palin as window on our fucked up political process.

Any analysis that makes more out of her than a fish out of water is stretching it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 2 October 2008 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Another example noted by the campaign was voting for defense cuts during the Reagan administration, and voting against the first Gulf war in 1991. (PolitiFact.com points out that he voted with the majority of Senate Democrats on the resolution.)

lolz - I mean the first Gulf War was fucking stupid and voting against it is totally defensible but way to screw up your facts ahead of time guys

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 2 October 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

That's not a bad plan for her, honestly: if her main liability is looking a bit confused and underinformed when pressed on issues, it make sense to take the attack-dog position, because you can't look confused or underinformed when you're lunging at someone. (Also she's allowed to lunge at Biden in ways he's not allowed to lunge at her, so why not.)

if biden isn't solid this could be pretty anti-climactic. if he doesn't veer off course to school her or attack her, but just trusts that the disparity between them will be so apparent that no one will be able to apologize for palin tomorrow, or likewise attack biden for anything, that would be ideal.

rent, Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

if biden isnt solid it will probably still be entertaining and climactic imo

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Well hey ain't that a shocker that the McCain campaign asked that the post-answer give-and-take "talk to him / her" portion of the debate Q&A be reduced from five minutes to two.

I'm kinda hoping she tries to bring cue cards to to podium.

David R., Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

yes "to to" that is correct

David R., Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm just afraid that this will be anti-climactic, really. i was so pumped for obama/mccain and that was pretty devoid of entertainment (which is what the debates are for, really). and now i'm getting excited to see a historic roasting and if it turns into a back-and-forth that isn't OBVIOUSLY lopsided, i will be disappointed. i would like biden to bring the zing, but if he gets goofy, and palin is palin, then the vp debate will seem like it should be soundtracked with benny hill, and they might as well just start running around shooting toy guns at each other.

rent, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Plouffe protests

David Plouffe spoke to reporters just now, my colleague Victoria McGrane reports, previewing the debate.

After repeatedly calling Palin first “an extremely good debater,” then a “great” one, at the end he ramped it up to “Gov. Palin is one of the best debaters in American politics,” at which point the press gaggle interrupted him with its laughter. “No, she is! Her 2006 debate, she knew where she wanted to take every question, and so I think she’ll be relentlessly on message tonight and again I’m sure she’ll have any number of biting and witty one-liners but our focus is on the person sitting at home in Canton, Ohio, tonight, Akron, Ohio tonight, struggling economically. Who is delivering a message about an agenda that is going to most positively impact their lives,” he said.

He also criticized McCain’s comments this morning about Gwen Ifill’s Obama book as “another in a long line of manufactured controversy.”

“They are a campaign that’s filled with distractions, and trying to manufacture news to try to quote-unquote ‘make news cycles.’ We’re very consistent; we’re trying to drive a message, articulate where Barack Obama and Joe Biden would take the country. We think that at the end of the day we’ll be rewarded for that consistency,” he said.

“We think that consistency matters in politics and I think there’s been an erraticness in the McCain campaign over the last 10 days that I think has puzzled voters. So we’ll see what Gov. Palin does tonight," he said.

gabbneb, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

idle speculation: is it possible that Palin's injury - apparently she hurt her hand at McCain's ranch and will be bandaged - is to neutralize criticism of her if she goes after wheelchair-bound Ifill?
