Yah thats total bs if they are throwing out a significant amount of food. I'd complain to facilities and make them do something about it.

kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

I've thought about just passing out the food myself but I'm sort of worried about logistics, and I don't want my own prejudices to bias who gets a share and not.

can vouch for foodrunners being awesome. may be a middleman, but they know what they're doing wrt food hygiene standards and nobody in your company has to worry about an foodborne liability

Our drummer is in this awesome rock opera, which started at Z-Space, did a turn in NYC, and is now playing for two weeks at the ACT:

Thought this revive would be about the Perth DJ cranked out of his gourd running off with someone's toddler in the middle of the day at Jane Werner plaza.

just saw JR's The Chronicles of San Francisco at SF MOMA, it's free on the lower level at the Natoma entrance, it isn't a movie exactly, I'm not sure what to call it but it's fantastic

JR?

‘Video mural’ maybe. it’s pretty impressive. All the moreso in that he’d never made anything animated like that before. Scale is what makes it imo.

the public eating of beans (Sparkle Motion), Sunday, 25 August 2019 00:36 (four years ago) link

xp lol, I don't know his real name, that's what he goes by (he collaborated with Agnes Varda on Faces Places)

also I would really recommend Lisa Reihana's multi-channel video "In Pursuit of Venus (Infected)" currently at the De Young, it's in a similar scale

Dan S, Sunday, 25 August 2019 00:38 (four years ago) link

the Reihana is equally impressive

Dan S, Sunday, 25 August 2019 00:41 (four years ago) link

Ah gotcha

Xp

Οὖτις, Sunday, 25 August 2019 00:42 (four years ago) link

the Reihana video is based on Charvet’s Polynesian wallpaper from 1806, “Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique” and is 13 feet tall and 70 feet long with multiple audio channels. It’s a continuous video scroll and is over 60 minutes long

“a vast digital scroll moves through live-action vignettes placed within an idealized background inspired by the original wallpaper. It asks viewers, “Who tells the story and how do images, past and present, shape our understanding of history?”. a story about colonialism

Dan S, Sunday, 25 August 2019 03:39 (four years ago) link

it is amazing

Dan S, Sunday, 25 August 2019 03:52 (four years ago) link

Oh yeah I saw this piece a couple of years ago. It's outstanding.

Interested in experience/opinions on Santa Rosa. Like, what would it be like to live there.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 26 August 2019 12:44 (four years ago) link

I'm not a Peanuts fan so there's that. Also I don't drink, so the wine thing could be annoying.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 26 August 2019 12:44 (four years ago) link

it's very far north and burned down and is now rebuilding. that's all I can say. I have a friend who lives up there and is carless and is constantly cmplaining that she's missing out on everything that happens in the bay area because there's no easy transportation down here. I know some other people who have a lovely midcentury house with a pool there.

akm, Monday, 26 August 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link

It’s a long way from the City, that’s for sure

the public eating of beans (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 26 August 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link

My parents live north of Santa Rosa, and I’ve spent a lot of time around there. City has some sprawl and the typical empty-downtown-now-getting-breweries-and-roasters.

But the weather is gorgeous outside of the rainy season. Each nearby town has its own character – Sebastopol is only about 10 minutes away. Cannabis culture is starting to boom there.

The alt-weekly (The Bohemian) and the daily paper (Santa Rosa Press Democrat) should give good snapshots. Happy to answer anything specific.

Santa Rosa barely survived those big fires a few years back.

Russian River is a world-class brewery there.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 August 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link

I was up there for a long weekend earlier this month, stayed in a house in between downtown SR & Windsor (north SR?). It's a rustic college town, kinda bedroomy (for some looooong commutes, though Novato is starting to see more industry moving in). Access to the coast and rivers and parks in West Sonoma is amazing. The neighborhoods that perished in the fires (like Coffey Park) are almost all rebuilt. The beer is great (Moonlight, Russian River, Cooperage), the wine is better. The farmers markets are incredible. The pace of life is nice. The traffic is terrible. You can fly out of STS if you have somewhere far to go and don't want to trek down to SFO/OAK by car.

I would visit you if you lived there, quincie! There is a crappy New Zealand bakery that barely eases my homesickness for mince and cheese pies, and good mountain biking trails according to Jordan.

just1n3, Monday, 26 August 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

it's one of the places where bay area "hipsters" move to "retire" -- there are lovely forest-y areas and the Russian River nearby. And you can have a slice of DC with you, as you will be near Bohemian Grove! lol

OWL PARTY W THE LIZARD PEOPLE

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 August 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

This is helpful, thank you! Spouse and I are considering a west coast relocation. Originally we were thinking SF (and Oakland, or at least one of us was down with East Bay). My challenge is that there is now a horse in my life, and I have no idea how to make that work in SF. If Santa Rosa can check boxes on climate, food, walkability to useful stuff, drivability to horse and other stuff—we will check it out. I’m a social worker and don’t worry too much about finding a job; spouse is in IT operations and is more concerned. Heroic commutes are off the table.

Where else in N CA should we consider?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 26 August 2019 18:36 (four years ago) link

Santa Cruz?

Οὖτις, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:40 (four years ago) link

Should note that there IS another transit option between Santa Rosa and the Bay.

https://www.sonomamarintrain.org/

Obv. still building up, but don't ignore it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link

Also looks like the Larkspur extension, which drops you right at the ferry terminal, should be up and running by the end of the year.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

Ooh good to know. We’re about 2 years out I think. But if we are gonna work in the Bay we’d just live in the Bay. But where would pony live arrrrgh damn pony.
