Klee's exquisite colour sense and visual musical/poetry or whatever want to call it was there from the early days!

Wait shit I voted Klimt accidentally.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 00:16 (five years ago) link

i barely know anything about either artist but to throw out a basic b take i feel like klee created a new visual world and klimt beautified the world we already live in.

this one is so delightful and mysterious, and seasonally appropriate

there were some artists heavily influenced by Klee in the art brut fashion like Dubuffet, who I quite liked at one time, but they lacked his charm or something.

a very nice klee thread

would love to think that ace pic of him sitting having afternoon tea with Kandinsky in front of a bauhaus type house would be enough to induce a fatal heart attack in Sir Roger Scrotum!

just realized last week there's a framed print of The Kiss in the hallway leading to my bedroom. it's been there for 3 years and I just noticed it was THAT painting. Damn

i used to find Klimt overly gaudy and was against his work

against?

My favorite Klee is the Google Doodle he did today.

yeah, i was repulsed by images like "woman in gold." it seemed to reflect an aesthetic sensibility that was absolutely alien to me. i was suspicious of him and this feeling has been hard to fully shake off.

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 04:57 (five years ago) link

klee on the other hand i always loved. there was always something really warm and personal about his work. it seemed to get at a certain essence of modernism--the joy in experimentation

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 05:00 (five years ago) link

Voted Klee... There a natural mesmerism to them that I've always responded to.

Not into Klimt much, but everyone owes it to themselves to see at least one in person.

It's kind of amazing to realize how much of the design aesthetic of the '50s and '60s comes from Paul Klee--from a thousand jazz album covers to the graphic works of Charles & Ray Eames (below) to the curtains my mom bought in 1960.

(Throw in a dash of Joan Miro to that '50s design stew.)

Klee by a mile, not even close.

I’m expecting klee but who knows! Manet pulled off a surprise landslide.

I went to an exhibition of Klees from the Met today. So much amazing stuff.

"Clarification" probably doesn't come out well in reproduction, but it was incredibly beautiful in full size.

I love the softness of his line compared to the hard edges both of other modernist movements — like cubism — and much of the design of his colleagues at the bauhaus. It’s a more personal kind of modernism.

💫 (Trϵϵship), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 00:18 (five years ago) link

Not that i don’t like that other stuff too

💫 (Trϵϵship), Tuesday, 1 January 2019 00:19 (five years ago) link

"Theatre-Mountain-Construction" had me tripping out a little bit too.

important update #2: there is now a Paul Klee poster hanging in front of my desk. That means that I am literally sitting between two Klimt and Klee posters. ILX: the thread: the life: the experience

the klee poster features his book cover for Kleine Welt:

Karl Malone, Friday, 11 January 2019 20:05 (five years ago) link

you know, re: the overexposed klimt society portraits that everyone is tired of, if you ignore the faces and other anthromorphic bits and just focus on like the clothes and the background textures there are a lot of similarities to klee!

the late great, Friday, 11 January 2019 20:51 (five years ago) link

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/Gustav_Klimt_046.jpg

like enlarge that picture so you can only see the lower half of it and it doesn't look so different from klee!

the late great, Friday, 11 January 2019 20:53 (five years ago) link

oh I think some of his nature studies show he was more than just a stylist and even his more decorative/embellished stuff is actually quite loose and not as intensively overworked as it maybe looks at postcard scale.
