The King's Speech and A Star is Born are C movies, mundanities. We have to be like Minos in Inferno, wrapping our tails around our bodies judging which circle in hell to cast these movies.

Argo wasn't terribly offensive, by virtue of not trying to be terribly important, unlike most of the rest of those

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

the shape of water was good. burn the rest

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link

Argo made the CIA heroic and Ben Affleck into a Serious Director. That's important.

bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

There were only 3 maybe 4 non-franchise hits this whole year. You better believe the Oscars are going to try to jam as many as possible in the top category.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

Bohemian and Crazy Rich Asians could complete their transformation into the People's Choice Awards.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 03:37 (five years ago) link

Or undo their transformation into the Indie Spirit Awards.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:25 (five years ago) link

Apparently they couldn't find anyone else and are now begging Kevin Hart to reconsider?

love craptually (Eric H.), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link

Given this will clearly be the last Oscars ever, what a way to go out.

love craptually (Eric H.), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link

what, is sea level rise affecting California too?

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:34 (five years ago) link

Oscar will be exposed as a serial flasher

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 January 2019 15:43 (five years ago) link

Good idea tbh, if only because it might tighten things up

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

they had 'rotating hosts' one year, don't think it went over that well

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

Apparently they did it all the time in the '70s.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:46 (five years ago) link

i didn't watch til '76, but earlier in the decade, yeah probably.

then Carson did it for awhile when Bob Hope got too old.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:48 (five years ago) link

Maybe the one your thinking of was the Gandhi ceremony that had Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, and Walter Matthau?

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:49 (five years ago) link

sounds like it! i thought Chevy Chase was involved in one. I remember him starting with "Good evening, Hollywood phonies."

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:52 (five years ago) link

Liza as host THIS year would be unimaginably entertaining. Or, just unimaginable.

Chevy did the Last Emperor one.

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

man, Chevy hosted solo in '88! I definitely don't recall that. xp

also, Whoopi Goldberg's ran over FOUR hours. And seemed longer.

Those ceremonies had a talent for length, like Prince.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 19:59 (five years ago) link

The Chevy-Goldie-Paul Hogan one I was thinking of. Def didn't realize Robert Shaw parlayed playing Captain Quint into a co-hosting role.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

That's a crazy ratings drop from 2014 to 2018.

jmm, Wednesday, 9 January 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

One that I think you can find across the board with network TV shows.

Although, maybe not ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_television_ratings

forrest drumpf (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 21:13 (five years ago) link

they really couldn't find a funny hollywood-adjacent person to host the show? very weird.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 9 January 2019 23:54 (five years ago) link

as someone pointed out, Jim Carrey was by far the funniest person on the GGs

too unpredictable though, and more a TV guy now

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 January 2019 01:20 (five years ago) link

after his run as an ensemble player on a TV show c. 1990-93, he did 27 movies, then did one TV lead in 2018. not sure he's fully outweighed the last 25 years by doing a show that 166,000 people watched.

sans lep (sic), Thursday, 10 January 2019 01:38 (five years ago) link

Green Book has gone, in three days, from recrudescent Oscar frontrunner to the movie written by the guy who tweeted at Trump about personally witnessing Muslims dancing in the street on 9/11, directed by the guy fond of flashing his penis to co-workers as a "joke." I'm fully entertained.
