lol I missed the top ten due to an aborted attempt to sleep the clock around. Great poll nag nag nag!!

so my first b&s record was barman, so the first song i really heard was "dog on wheels," which is kind of like a world gently unfolding, and then "the state i am in" happened right after and i was like "this is the best song i've ever heard in my fucking life" and the rest is history. good no. 1

and i went through several phases of thinking i was too cool for this band or like i had heard everything basically worth hearing and every time i went back the strength of the songs humbled me incredibly

Good morning all, sorry to have missed the top-10 rollout!

"Boy with the Arab Strap" -- so weird to see them being rock stars and doing "everybody get up on stage" at Glastonbury in that clip. I still, all these years later, think of this as music to be listened to by yourself. But what a song. Everything in the top 10 is so good I hear each song and think "how could this not be top 3?"

"Seeing Other People" and "Stars of Track and Field" my #2 and #3. Had the same reaction as rip van wanko, "I can still remember the feeling, something akin to "i have found my new favorite band" Sad, pretty, dirty all at once, I didn't know you could do that in one song. "Seeing Other People," all these years later, still one of the songs I sing to myself most often when riding my bike, walking down the street, etc. Pretty surprised neither of these is #1.

I'll post the full results in the morning (Melbourne time) if there's interest. I need to proceed directly to bed now. :)

The chord changes -- what is it about them?!!?

The bulk of the song is written in a somewhat descending A#m-G#m-F#-B-C#-B six chord progression... EXCEPT the first line of every verse which transposes the relative major of the first 2 chords (also the same chords of the last two of the series. So when you first hear the verse progression it just feels like it never resolves as you keep waiting for A#m-G#m to show up again and instead seems locked into the B-C#-B loop.

As a non-B+S fan, I think "Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying", is the only song of theirs I recognize - though I didn't know it was them for years, I just thought, "Not that annoying song again", so it's possible I might recognize other songs. Re "Mayfly," I love the line "I don't mind the sight of you" so much -- the way he takes a standard phrase ("I can't stand the sight of you") and then reasons, what would be the mild, Belle and Sebastian version of this?

Was surprised to see that 9 other people voted for "I Love My Car", but cheers to you all:

"Marx & Engles" was my #2, and "I Love My Car" my #12. I probably listen to the I'm Waking Up to Us EP more than anything else by this band.

Thanks for this poll. It was nearly 20 years ago upon first hearing "The Stars of Track and Field" that immediately knew I had a new favorite band.

this seems like damning with faint praise, but I really love how Mayfly ties the sequencing together of IYFS. I don't think you can overlook it's pop value in an album that could have come across as fairly bitter. I suppose one of the downsides of a tracks poll is that somewhat slight songs don't hold up that well in the sunlight, but it's hard for me to imagine that album without it.

it's kind of a perfect album track tbh, it pulls you right out of the sadder and more expansive mood of the title track and you don't really notice it happening

I suspect my ballot is slightly heavier on later stuff compared to others.
