Comes back to preference for his personal songs over the character ones, I guess. TSIAI just means everything to me and I've never really got a handle on this Jane person.

seeing other people as the highest-ranked sinister track?
― bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link
also I feel like it's one of the few early-ish songs that predicts just how big and bold they'd let themselves get from DCW onwards which would make it a nice capper

idk i think that first verse is as distinct a character study as they did in their whole career.

"Like Dylan In the Movies" was my #1, one where you can hear the VU influence. I switched it to my #1 at the last second from "Marx & Engles" on which...you cannot hear the VU influence

there's something really incredible about the verse chord progression on this one
the top 2 is pretty perfect no matter the order
― ufo, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link
yeah agreed
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:46 (five years ago) link
i also love that it's down to their very first song or their very best single
seeing other people has an amazing piano part, but i left it off my ballot for some reason. maybe cause i had already voted for 7 sinister tracks and i like em all just a little bit more than this one.
― bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link
wow, four points apart !I bet The State I am In has like 900 points.
― Nabozo, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link
These top 3 are all such perfect songs. And I'm perfectly fine with them at the top, though I had them at 8, 11 and 12 on my own list (with State I Am In highest).
― erasingclouds, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link
I only voted for two Sinister tracks and this is one of them. So... well done, people.

i voted for both songs in the top two though they were not very high on my ballot bc i rightly assumed they didn't need me
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link
Pretty interesting that the (presumably) top Sinister song is only #3, after it demolished the album poll
― Vinnie, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link
#1 has a VERY convincing lead. Actually, so does #2 over #3.
― Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link
xp idk even without number 1, sinister put in a pretty dominating performance, with 8 of its 10 songs placing and the lowest coming in at #12
― bros before HOOS (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 December 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link
Yeah, even though the album dominates the top of the ranking there's been a lot of splitting between the songs. 39 votes for Seeing other People and 24 for Me and the Major or 26 for Judy. TSIai was my 9th. Ok I change my prediction to 950 points (is 1000 even possible).
― Nabozo, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link
He'll post Big John Shaft anyway
― Nabozo, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link
i am sort of surprised that there was such a split between "mayfly" and "the boy done wrong again" not placing at all, and all the rest placing extremely high. they're the weakest tracks on sinister, sure, but not by that much.
― ufo, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:56 (five years ago) link
XP: Apparently 1000 is possible, yes.

so my first b&s record was barman, so the first song i really heard was "dog on wheels," which is kind of like a world gently unfolding, and then "the state i am in" happened right after and i was like "this is the best song i've ever heard in my fucking life" and the rest is history. good no. 1

and i went through several phases of thinking i was too cool for this band or like i had heard everything basically worth hearing and every time i went back the strength of the songs humbled me incredibly

Good morning all, sorry to have missed the top-10 rollout!
"Boy with the Arab Strap" -- so weird to see them being rock stars and doing "everybody get up on stage" at Glastonbury in that clip. I still, all these years later, think of this as music to be listened to by yourself. But what a song. Everything in the top 10 is so good I hear each song and think "how could this not be top 3?"
"Seeing Other People" and "Stars of Track and Field" my #2 and #3. Had the same reaction as rip van wanko, "I can still remember the feeling, something akin to "i have found my new favorite band" Sad, pretty, dirty all at once, I didn't know you could do that in one song. "Seeing Other People," all these years later, still one of the songs I sing to myself most often when riding my bike, walking down the street, etc. Pretty surprised neither of these is #1.
