I'm confused...are they saying only these unreleased tracks were recorded at Plywood Analog? Because the album (according to the liner notes) was recorded at Plywood Digital, and was the second of three (or four, if you count Arc-Weld) albums he recorded digitally before he realized he hated digital recording.

haha, yeah, i have no idea.

anything relying on Neil's memory is sketchy at this point

Wow... honestly though another albums worth of Ragged Glory is pretty damn exciting

Next NYA post: Sorry, more tapes have been discovered and you're now getting Everybody's Rockin' II.

Gotta a feeling that Neil's trips through the archives are all along these lines:

"Whoa there's so much good stuff we didn't use for Fork In The Road! We should put this out!"

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 17 December 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

there's a video in the archives now with him going through various old memorabilia and you can kinda tell that the people working for him are like "this is going to be our only chance for the next year to get him to pay attention to this shit"

I can verify this is the case from firsthand accounts

should be good! hilarious that 30+ years into the process, Neil is still just making it up. This isn't even listed on the NYA "Timeline" and has never been mentioned as a possible release til a few months ago (ditto the Ragged Glory II thing he teased a little while back).

So...we're never seeing Odeon/Budokan.

I'll take whatever he gives us, to be completely honest, even ones I wasn't all that jazzed about turned out pretty cool.

Dumb question, maybe, but would that electric '76 collection they mention in the Songs For Judy liner notes be the same thing as Odeon/Budokan? Or would that be completely different '76 stuff? Either way, I want more of that stuff soon.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

Odeon / Budokan is from the Spring 1976 tour. The Electric '76 tour would be from the fall shows. (Fairly doubtful that the latter collection is forthcoming any time soon, but who knows?)
Looks like you got a great setlist, Matt! So glad that "Thrasher" is back in the mix consistently.

tylerw, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

Thanks for clarifying Tyler, wasn't sure about the '76 timeline. I hope those both come out! But, like you said, not gonna hold my breath on either one.

anyone heard the Revolution Blues outtakes 4 LP set, which is basically just a few minutes of the song and then three hours of Rusty Kershaw and Stephen Stills struggling over a knife while Neil eggs Rusty on to kill Stephen?

omar little, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 16:56 (five years ago) link

yeah "Thrasher" was a real moment for me

also we literally were just naming obscure songs like oh he's gonna open with this or that and I had just joked he's gonna open with "Last Trip to Tulsa" and then he actually did

two months pass...

There's a video of Neil doing a beautiful version of "Birds" from a CSNY Fillmore East show on the site right now....is that something that's been released before??

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 April 2019 17:57 (five years ago) link

a bunch of video stuff that's new or i never noticed....in the 90s he did some weird "show" where it was model trains and they did funny voices for the little small model train model guys???

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 April 2019 18:13 (five years ago) link

If so, I wonder if he ever ran into Ringo (of Thomas the Tank Engine game) during that period.

“Hey, how’s your make believe train world going?”
“Good, and yours?”

Karl Malone, Thursday, 4 April 2019 18:20 (five years ago) link

haha, haven't seen that ... i think the CSNY videos were on the OG BLURAY.
archives site remains totally frustrating ... whole lotta talk about unreleased stuff, not a lot of actual unreleased stuff.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 April 2019 18:21 (five years ago) link

IIRC, those CSNY Fillmore shows were filmed for a movie that didn't come out, but Neil hijacked the footage for Journey Through The Past and other docs.

does anyone know much about Oceanside/Countryside?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:01 (five years ago) link

here's what I know:

Neil’s Comes A Time LP went through a variety of iterations before it was finally released in 1978. The original was Oceanside-Countryside, recorded in Fort Lauderdale and Nashville in early 1977. “Oceanside-Countryside was a record I felt really good about,” Neil wrote in a recent Times-Contrarian post. “It was quite a personal record, mostly made up of acoustic songs which had no bass or drums.” The LP was done and dusted – but Reprise suggested that Neil add more instrumentation to the mix. Uncharacteristically, he took his label’s advice and recorded the more fleshed out material that ended up dominating the released Comes A Time. But Oceanside-Countryside promises a more intimate listening experience. Neil calls it “a breath of fresh air.”

tylerw, Thursday, 4 April 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

hmmmm interesting...kinda like the hitchhiker vers of comes a time sounds cool....

one thing I ignored until today was the CSNY 1974 set that came out a few years ago...some Neil gems on here

I can't think of any act I like more than Neil Young that I've lost track of more. That awesome streak of Le Noise, Americana and Psychedelic Pill seemed really promising - and that was only six years ago! - but now I don't know what the hell is going on.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2019 02:48 (five years ago) link

the archives stuff is consistently great

as far as studio stuff, the only thing you've missed is Peace Trail which is really quirky and cool

Promise of the Real sucks as a band

Don't Be Denied off CSNY 74 is really great

I really like the Neil stuff on the csny 74 set, but yeah, the rest is pretty skippable. Pretty bloated.

tylerw, Friday, 5 April 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link

man them huffing and puffing through "Long Time Gone" in a football stadium is like almost cliche "death of the 60s" shit...

cool to hear Pushed it Over the End

Revolution Blues is surprisingly tuff, Crosby must've stopped wetting himself about that song

re: Oceanside/Countryside, there was one more step before it became Comes A Time, which is the rejected title (and art) of 'Give To The Wind':

whitehallunity, Friday, 5 April 2019 14:08 (five years ago) link

wow i've never heard of that, thanks!

Comes a Time (which is a good album for sure)...but it's funny, I sometimes wonder in a couple cases if there were times when Neil was running low on cash...not that they are uninspired albums at all, but Comes a Time and Harvest Moon for how contrary he is usually those both seemed like times when he was like..okay we need something people are going to like - not a problem

i like the give to the wind cover a lot better than comes a time
