Idk there’s this unexamined western millenerian eschatological affect wherein being overwhelmed by apocalyptic feelings becomes its own sort of solipsistic romance rather than an impetus to build and make horizontal connections or fight

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 00:30 (five years ago) link

i mean it seems like thats what the song's about!

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 03:48 (five years ago) link

Yeah. But ... I think that feeling is bad. So that rubs weirdly against my feeling that the song is good. I guess it gets at the question of whether critique is possible via exaggeration/reduction or is it better to posit an alternative, to say nothing of the question as to whether art’s job is critique in the first place

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 04:55 (five years ago) link

i didnt get the impression that was tsrobodo's point exactly

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 05:47 (five years ago) link

maybe im wrong idk but i find it weirdly affirming that my experience of being ineffectual in a society that disempowers the individual is also an experience shared by others

"how to draw/petrichor" is becoming my favorite on the new album

whyyy is it not 12+ minutes

tpp, Thursday, 20 December 2018 14:33 (five years ago) link

It's a cool song, though I like the "How to Draw" half a little more. There's still a lot of songs in the back half of this album I can't really get into tho. Wish I could hear what you all hear in "Inside Your Mind". But others have grown a lot on me: "Sincerity is Scary" and "It's Not Living" are A+. So generous that this band continues to throw bones like "It's Not Living" to fans like me that adore the first album most

Vinnie, Thursday, 20 December 2018 15:18 (five years ago) link

Bon Iver must be lying in a ditch somewhere in the woods, wrapped up in fetus position and bawling his eyes out, because he knows he'll never write a song as gorgeous as 'I Couldn't Be More In Love'.

My brain has inserted a nonexistent Common verse at the end of Sincerity is Scary. 2 decades of Soulquarian conditioning at work.

this tour's setlist looks great

from videos i've seen the lighting setup looks very very cool too of course

ufo, Saturday, 12 January 2019 04:23 (five years ago) link

wow that set list is just banger after banger

k3vin k., Saturday, 12 January 2019 04:59 (five years ago) link

also wild to think that the album hype cycle is about to start up again in only a month or two

ufo, Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:03 (five years ago) link

last years album kind of disappointing

flopson, Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:44 (five years ago) link

they better deliver

flopson, Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:45 (five years ago) link

wow, yeah, the setlist/videos look great - so great that I just bought tickets to see them on Friday, v excited.

toby, Saturday, 12 January 2019 08:42 (five years ago) link

Damn, setlist looks great. Might have to make a short trip to Singapore or Thailand to catch them

Vinnie, Saturday, 12 January 2019 08:50 (five years ago) link

Unsurprisingly they were completely awesome, can highly recommend this tour.

I was browsing in a shop a couple of days ago and they had 'She Way Out' blasting out really loud, and it actually sounded amazing at that volume. It got me revisiting the first album again.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:22 (five years ago) link

and you realized it is awesome

k3vin k., Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:51 (five years ago) link

and I realised that while Healy has become a much better singer since and there's moments on the record that make me wince a bit on the vocal front, the album is packed with bangers.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

I think Healy sings some of these songs better live nowadays. I really hated 'Chocolate' until I heard a recent live version, and the way they start that song off live with just the interlocking guitar licks is a neat touch!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 22:07 (five years ago) link

'M.O.N.E.Y.' sounds great live tol. At this point, it's only really the closing track that I can't really get into.

I wish 'You' had been on this album.

*too

So excited to see them in April! Their stage setup looks incredible.

"m.o.n.e.y." live was incredible, i wish they still played it

and "head.cars.bending" ofc but i've given up on that

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:37 (five years ago) link

They piss off xgau apparently:

I think they suck, and having streamed the new one at least three times without retaining anything but the internet skit will only consider explaining why for a minimum of a buck a word--as I just said, I don't do pans anymore. Congratulations, however, for not calling them a "rock band." Rock bands still oughta, you know, rock (for better or worse--here's to you, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age). I note as well that you are not from the United Kingdom, the spawning ground of the 1975 delusion. Don't let me stop you--stick to what you believe. But don't kid yourself if you find your faith faltering.

have there been any high-quality youtubes of recent shows? I can't find any right now

k3vin k., Saturday, 26 January 2019 21:37 (five years ago) link

Where is that Christgau quote from? That is hilarious.

I Am Sporadicus (I M Losted), Saturday, 26 January 2019 23:17 (five years ago) link

I hate to admit it it but “love it if we made it” has found it way into my head and I’ve played it non stop this week.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 27 January 2019 07:39 (five years ago) link

Popped into my head this morning too! Clear highpoint of this album cycle imo

imago, Sunday, 27 January 2019 08:52 (five years ago) link

I was just rewatching the video of it from the O2 linked above. Even though I was anticipating it for the whole week before it still completely blew me away live.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtKJXFqEtPM

apparently i missed this from two weeks ago but it's great

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Saturday, 2 February 2019 00:29 (five years ago) link

I posted that upthread two weeks ago! But I guess I used a mobile link and it didn't embed.

But yeah it's great, they (unsurprisingly) use it as the backdrop when they play it live and it works really well.

toby, Saturday, 2 February 2019 11:11 (five years ago) link

My appreciation of that one has only increased - I thought it was a bit formless on first listen, but over time I've realised just how cathartic it is to bellow along to.

The back half of the album ('Inside Your Mind' to 'I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)') has become my favourite part of the album now.
