i was excited when splinter got going and seemed to position itself as explicitly left leaning with the sharpness of old school gawker but man have they run out of steam. fuckin clickonomics.

and it kills me that they've got writers who could be great if they were less concerned about forcing the 'nihilst satire' tone on the whole universe

a thing i always loved about gawker was that it was very political but not about politics

i feel like splinter emerged to say who and what is bad right at the exact moment that saying who and what is bad feels particularly useless

i couldn't finish the whole thing but what was the problem with it exactly? that it's tacky he wrote a story about his brother's suicide for an auto blog and kinda pegged it to the car he drove around? the narrative itself is... fine.

in this story about this writer’s brother there is one (1) picture of them both and five (5) pictures of the car as well as numerous paragraphs about what a smooth, enjoyable ride the volvo provided as he made his emotional pilgrimage around to places in ireland of great personal sentimental valuelook i know we all love seeing ads everywhere for everything all the time now but this one just left a bad taste in my mouth for some reason 🤷♂️

For the world at large, this is the only experience they’ll ever have with him. There’s a weight on me, then, to make it something real.

he's an intern for gawker for cars and needed some car related peg obv to write about his brother - if the writing hadn't felt so sincere i'd hold it more against him but i feel like he did the bare minimum to get published (the "i drove a volvo" line was so perfunctory). i guess i'm just sympathetic :/ he's obv an aspiring writer who misses his brother.
― Mordy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:43 (five years ago) link
to his credit, he doesn't delve into a thought exercise about what his brother would have thought about the car
― mh, Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:46 (five years ago) link
Editors shouldn’t let this happen.

― J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2019 22:50 (five years ago) link
at least it was his own brother, his family ... considering how many writers, artists, etc. appropriate other people's personal tragedies or use them to write tone deaf think pieces ... it may be tacky, but assumedly, it's not hurting anyone.
― sarahell, Friday, 11 January 2019 02:22 (five years ago) link
compared to the NYT magazine feature story last month about Max Harris' veganism and care for animals that kinda handwaved his lack of care for the guests at his event, where 36 people died ... "volvo gave me a car to drive around Ireland and write about my dead brother" seems kinda sweet
