You mean the ilx poster who was brainwashed by Tom Ewing ? He’s a hand wringing sincerity bro like all the new radicals fans pumping up the 1975

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link

I'm not gonna get into hair-splitting arguments about irony bros on the 1975 thread

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

I mean that in the sense that we are all brainwashed by Tom Ewing

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

Saying max is a “irony bro” is a mega misreading of his place in teh discourse

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

fwiw I follow a lot of lronic hipster left ppl on Twitter and all they could talk about when the singles list came out was how they either hated or were profoundly baffled by them

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:55 (five years ago) link

Yes. They like parquet courts

Max is being somewhat (tho I don’t think disingenuously) iconoclastic in his support, and while he’s conversant with irony bros I think he tends to be pretty sincere

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

there was some really funny twitter post last year that I can't find that was like "I wish there was a Pitchfork for indie rock"

A Brief Inquiry Into Hair-Splitting Arguments About Irony Bros.

Would have been a better title.

What idiot called it 'A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships' and not 'I'm Literally Shaking RN'

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

max is like a previous gen irony bro imo. he's graduated from irony and now writes posts titled 'Why Mark Zuckerberg is FaceBook's Biggest Liability'

flopson, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

I find the lyrics to this song moving, emotionally, but also obsequious and pandering and far far away from what I'd point to and say "here, observe these lyrics, which are objectively good."

― flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:24 (three hours ago) Permalink

i don't think it's obsequious. like most of us i'm predisposed to not like songs that are too topical and try to capture the zeitgeist or wtv, but they pulled it off

See, THIS is an ironybro post

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link

There’s probably an implied “(and that’s bad, btw)” already on this album after “the smell of your hair reminds me of her feet.”

Fair enough. Maybe I should give them more credit for that success!

flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

The chorus is cathartic af but I feel like that just adds to the bathos.

Not sure if intentional but probably best captures the zeitgeist in how empty and myopic the title sentiment feels relative to the anxiety of the verses.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

Yes good post agreed

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:21 (five years ago) link

Something about it’s concept + “give yourself a try” which seem very rhetorically clever, ways of standing out by framing things in a way that reflects our time better

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

I think "Give Yourself a Try" does it better by default. Self deprecation and wit are never not relatable.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 22:34 (five years ago) link

I do think the first couplet "We're fucking in a car, shooting heroin / saying controversial things just for the hell of it" is top-tier but I'm a sucker for meta

Tsrodobo otm

Idk there’s this unexamined western millenerian eschatological affect wherein being overwhelmed by apocalyptic feelings becomes its own sort of solipsistic romance rather than an impetus to build and make horizontal connections or fight

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 00:30 (five years ago) link

i mean it seems like thats what the song's about!

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 03:48 (five years ago) link

Yeah. But ... I think that feeling is bad. So that rubs weirdly against my feeling that the song is good. I guess it gets at the question of whether critique is possible via exaggeration/reduction or is it better to posit an alternative, to say nothing of the question as to whether art’s job is critique in the first place

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 04:55 (five years ago) link

i didnt get the impression that was tsrobodo's point exactly

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 05:47 (five years ago) link

maybe im wrong idk but i find it weirdly affirming that my experience of being ineffectual in a society that disempowers the individual is also an experience shared by others

whyyy is it not 12+ minutes

tpp, Thursday, 20 December 2018 14:33 (five years ago) link

It's a cool song, though I like the "How to Draw" half a little more. There's still a lot of songs in the back half of this album I can't really get into tho. Wish I could hear what you all hear in "Inside Your Mind". But others have grown a lot on me: "Sincerity is Scary" and "It's Not Living" are A+. So generous that this band continues to throw bones like "It's Not Living" to fans like me that adore the first album most

Vinnie, Thursday, 20 December 2018 15:18 (five years ago) link

Bon Iver must be lying in a ditch somewhere in the woods, wrapped up in fetus position and bawling his eyes out, because he knows he'll never write a song as gorgeous as 'I Couldn't Be More In Love'.

My brain has inserted a nonexistent Common verse at the end of Sincerity is Scary. 2 decades of Soulquarian conditioning at work.

ufo, Saturday, 12 January 2019 04:23 (five years ago) link

wow that set list is just banger after banger

k3vin k., Saturday, 12 January 2019 04:59 (five years ago) link

also wild to think that the album hype cycle is about to start up again in only a month or two

ufo, Saturday, 12 January 2019 05:03 (five years ago) link

last years album kind of disappointing

Vinnie, Saturday, 12 January 2019 08:50 (five years ago) link

I was browsing in a shop a couple of days ago and they had 'She Way Out' blasting out really loud, and it actually sounded amazing at that volume. It got me revisiting the first album again.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:22 (five years ago) link

and you realized it is awesome

k3vin k., Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:51 (five years ago) link

and I realised that while Healy has become a much better singer since and there's moments on the record that make me wince a bit on the vocal front, the album is packed with bangers.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

I think Healy sings some of these songs better live nowadays. I really hated 'Chocolate' until I heard a recent live version, and the way they start that song off live with just the interlocking guitar licks is a neat touch!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 19 January 2019 22:07 (five years ago) link

'M.O.N.E.Y.' sounds great live tol. At this point, it's only really the closing track that I can't really get into.

I wish 'You' had been on this album.
