Elza Soares is 81 and she'll be in the higher part of my year list. Come at me.

Over-35yo woman Brandi Carlile got a Grammy Nomination and on the NYT Jon Caramanica made a big deal about how out of touch it made the awards look

President Keyes, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

on the NYT Popcast that is

President Keyes, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

"surely young people have generally been doing more interesting stuff in popular music than old people?"

this sort of ageism (as well as the carlile moaning cited above) does nobody any good

maura, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

Over-40s though...

If you listen to a lot of metal, it’s quite easy to cover the non-Anglophone and over-35 demographics. Women not so much.

DJ Koze too xp to me

this sort of ageism (as well as the carlile moaning cited above) does nobody any good

the people: grammys totally ignored women last year. bad grammys!

the grammys: [nominates woman whose not-at-all-unpopular breakthrough song is about women and other people who have been unrepresented and unloved]

the people: she is old and you are out of touch. bad grammys!

"surely young people have generally been doing more interesting stuff in popular music than old people?"

this sort of ageism (as well as the carlile moaning cited above) does nobody any good

if you disagree that's fine but no need to accuse me of "ageism"

perhaps "interesting" is imprecise but then zeitgeisty or new or fresh or whatever, stuff that would go on an eoy list in a zeitgeisty mag

niels, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

that implicates the zeitgeist more than anything

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

this new Meshell Ndegeocello album came up on a Spotify year end list that's supposed to hip you to stuff you would like that came out in 2018, it's a pretty amazing covers album (though "covers" doesn't do it justice, they really reimagine the songs)

The Brandi Carlisle record is the one that listeners over 35 ask me about. My best friend's wife is a massive fan, and this album's success has felt like vindication.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:48 (five years ago) link

which of these groups of artists would be bigger:

1) artists that release strong material in their youth, weaker material (or none) when they get old
2) artists that release weak material (or none) in their youth, strong material when they get old
3) artists that release qualitatively consistent material throughout their career

if you think I'm suggesting old people don't make great music, I find your interpretation of my post disrespectful

I'm just saying it's hardly a surprise that there would be more young people on eoy lists

niels, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:50 (five years ago) link

otm about the meshell record, which should be on more of these lists

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

Not sure if we posted the American Songwriter list last week. Definitely not afraid of over 35 olds.

https://americansongwriter.com/2018/12/american-songwriters-top-25-albums-of-2018-presented-by-daddario/

President Keyes, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

neils if you have to post two successive clarifications of your original post maybe the problem was the original post?

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:55 (five years ago) link

attn kornruelz, amanda shires is finally on a list ^^^ xp

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:55 (five years ago) link

xp yeah I guess so, just surprised anyone would think I don't like music made by old people, doesn't make any sense to me

niels, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:56 (five years ago) link

sorry if you feel disrespected but your initial assertion came off in an uncharitable-toward-older-women (not all artists, specifically *women artists*) way that is not uncommon among the chattering classes across the board

and katherine otm about the zeitgeist being implicated

xp

maura, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

anyway fcc otm

maura, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link

yeah okay, didn't mean that... anyway 3 of my favorite 2018 albums by women born before 1983 are Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton John by Juliana Hatfield, Rebound by Eleanor Friedberger and SOAR by Catrin Finch with Seckou Keita, all highly recommended

xp "Leave It Alone" by Amanda Shires was also... #99 on the NPR tracks list

niels, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

For a messageboard trying to list all the women over 35 who put out records this year, you sure are finding it easy to avoid mentioning Daphne & Celeste

imago, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 17:04 (five years ago) link

Lj why don't you just say it's good and recommend it without being a prick about it

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 17:14 (five years ago) link

The Brandi Carlisle album is exactly the kind of thing that deserves multiple Grammy nominations (IMO) — terrific songwriting, remarkable performances (I love her singing), excellent production... all in a very “accessible”/“popular” (in the best possibly sense) style.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 17:19 (five years ago) link

yeah when I reviewed it for the 'Fork I got more positive email than anything I've written in years. I didn't think anyone still did that sort of thing, until I realized 35+ men and women are more likely to write emails.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

Amanda Shires made The Atlantic's list too. So did Marianne Faithful and um, Metallica...

PLACE MEG MYERS’ “NUMB” U COWARDS

this is a good album but kind of suffers from no one covering this kind of music anymore unless it's by a designated name like snail mail or whoever

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

The Amanda Shires album is one I can see myself returning to over time; glad it's getting some recognition.
