Pitchfork and many other lists seem mostly uninterested in largely young people genres like kpop and afrobeats, plus genres with young & old like dancehall, reggaeton, Afropop and soca.

as someone who votes in a lot of lists and frequently enjoys kpop and afrobeats tracks -- it's less that I don't enjoy them, more that I don't listen to enough to feel comfortable making a judgment that this is the best of the year and not the 200 I've never heard.

Over-35yo woman Brandi Carlile got a Grammy Nomination and on the NYT Jon Caramanica made a big deal about how out of touch it made the awards look

If you listen to a lot of metal, it’s quite easy to cover the non-Anglophone and over-35 demographics. Women not so much.

the people: grammys totally ignored women last year. bad grammys!
the grammys: [nominates woman whose not-at-all-unpopular breakthrough song is about women and other people who have been unrepresented and unloved]
the people: she is old and you are out of touch. bad grammys!

"surely young people have generally been doing more interesting stuff in popular music than old people?"this sort of ageism (as well as the carlile moaning cited above) does nobody any good
if you disagree that's fine but no need to accuse me of "ageism"
perhaps "interesting" is imprecise but then zeitgeisty or new or fresh or whatever, stuff that would go on an eoy list in a zeitgeisty mag
― niels, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link
that implicates the zeitgeist more than anything

this new Meshell Ndegeocello album came up on a Spotify year end list that's supposed to hip you to stuff you would like that came out in 2018, it's a pretty amazing covers album (though "covers" doesn't do it justice, they really reimagine the songs)

The Brandi Carlisle record is the one that listeners over 35 ask me about. My best friend's wife is a massive fan, and this album's success has felt like vindication.

which of these groups of artists would be bigger:
1) artists that release strong material in their youth, weaker material (or none) when they get old2) artists that release weak material (or none) in their youth, strong material when they get old3) artists that release qualitatively consistent material throughout their career
if you think I'm suggesting old people don't make great music, I find your interpretation of my post disrespectful
I'm just saying it's hardly a surprise that there would be more young people on eoy lists

sorry if you feel disrespected but your initial assertion came off in an uncharitable-toward-older-women (not all artists, specifically *women artists*) way that is not uncommon among the chattering classes across the board

yeah okay, didn't mean that... anyway 3 of my favorite 2018 albums by women born before 1983 are Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton John by Juliana Hatfield, Rebound by Eleanor Friedberger and SOAR by Catrin Finch with Seckou Keita, all highly recommended
xp "Leave It Alone" by Amanda Shires was also... #99 on the NPR tracks list

The Brandi Carlisle album is exactly the kind of thing that deserves multiple Grammy nominations (IMO) — terrific songwriting, remarkable performances (I love her singing), excellent production... all in a very “accessible”/“popular” (in the best possibly sense) style.

yeah when I reviewed it for the 'Fork I got more positive email than anything I've written in years. I didn't think anyone still did that sort of thing, until I realized 35+ men and women are more likely to write emails.
