As usual, Textura has zero overlap with any other publication’s list.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

Anne Garner sounding great so far.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

slow burn has great lyrics and i'm not sure what the criticism of the quoted lines is supposed to be ...?

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

so the earth is a globe,

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

well, if the sun's going down in Tennessee and the bars are closing in an hour where she is, then she's probably somewhere in Europe. Seems like a detail you might want to mention, Kacey!

President Keyes, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

she has acknowledged that it's a dubious timeline, and that her husband called her on it, but she didn't care.

speaking of which, her husband made a top 20-worthy album this year that i've seen on no lists at all.

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

xp Yep, that's pretty much it... plus, you don't usually "look at flowers" in the dark(?)

I haven't read her interview, funny it came up, all is cool, etc.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

If you can go fishin' in the dark you can look at flowers imo

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

i would think the funky timeline fits the concept ... 'slow burn ... ' the bar closes in two hours ... we hang out all night and then see the flowers ...

so is anyone contributing to Uproxx's list or

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

i want to contribute to a list but i don't want it to be hosted by a record label

i fancied trying to DIY it earlier this year but...

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

sorry, hosted by an outlet that is owned by a record label, is what i meant to write

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

"Slow Burn" sounds like Sufjan Stevens so the p4k list has credibility.

billstevejim, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link

assuming it's in their list, i did not read it yet

Kacey talks about those lyrics *very briefly* at the end of this:

anna wintour finally placed then (twice). glad to have it confirmed it's not just me

12. JIMOTHY LACOSTE, “SUBWAY SYSTEM”

single bed mentality (||||||||), Monday, 10 December 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

it's pretty funny imo

despite all the handwringing about the lyric on "slow burn" the concept is kinda old hat for her.... what i love about the song is the way the instruments are introduced gradually at the beginning and then how the song is peeled open halfway thru by the backing vocals. maybe that meta aspect of it is not so subtle but i do think there's a certain cleverness there that draws a through line back to the core of her appeal pre-golden hour, but just puts a different twist on the idea of "clever"

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

wth is this

'British Turquoise Jeep' is about the closest thing I can think of it, although one of the nerdy background Jeep dudes who never got to make many songs.

always one of the best lists:

Nice to see Vital Idles finally getting a mention (on the Bandcamp list).

The Anne Garner album from Textura list is sounding like the best album of the year for me right now too.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 05:06 (five years ago) link

Hammock sounds interesting too. I had never even heard of them before but their songs on spotify all have millions of plays which is weird for ambient/post rock, they have double the listeners than say, Stars of the Lid.

I love the DJ Healer - Nothing 2 Loose that has been featured on the GvB and Noisey lists

p4k albums list is fine but nothing interesting about it at all

ufo, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 06:04 (five years ago) link

That seems like an overstatement .. id say cupcakke placing over cardi is surprising ... mitski over kacey disappointing

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 06:25 (five years ago) link

It seems weird that a record that came out 10 days ago could place 7th.

triggercut, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 06:47 (five years ago) link

If I pretend Pitchfork’s 11-25 are actually the top 5, I like their list way better.

No. 5: Noname - Room 25
No. 4: Amen Dunes - Freedom
No. 3: Tirzah - Devotion
No. 2: Cupcakke - Ephorize
No. 1: Ariana Grande - Sweetener

Pitchfork’s album and song list for this year were very uninspiring imho, always looked forward to their eoy lists and this time it feels like I’ve seen that list already a dozen times.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:17 (five years ago) link

i actually thought the lists were more interesting than usual this year ... not afraid to take a stand anyway ... at least relative to other pubs, there was some volatility /unpredictability

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:20 (five years ago) link

wrong gangin

based grandpa (noz), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:25 (five years ago) link

i guess biggest surprise on the p4k albums list is lack of janelle who's been a staple everywhere else - i know they didn't BNM it or anything but as usual there's plenty of other things that placed well in EOY that they didn't rate earlier on

the tracks list definitely felt like it had more character to it than the last few years but there's not much about the albums list that stands out except for a few details in the placings. really im just a little disappointed that nothing i havent heard, let alone heard of, snuck into the list really because that's the real joy of eoy lists season and usually theres 1 or 2 even in the p4k list

ufo, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:35 (five years ago) link

I actually find the pitchfork list very agreeable, and I guess that is why I don’t like it. I know it sounds unreasonable but it feels to me that besides some odd, very “pitchfork” choices - like “Snail Mail at #5 - it doesn’t feel as unique as other years.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:35 (five years ago) link

yeah i completely understand what you mean by that - but i've also found the eoy critical consensus this year more agreeable than usual so when a list that's almost as centrist as can be wrt that it's bound to feel bland

ufo, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:43 (five years ago) link

does anyone else read these lists and feel like the generational disconnect between working critics with poptimist ideals and young people who listen to actual popular music is more pronounced than it ever has been

it's like an uncanny valley sensation except instead of creepy eyeballs it's soccer mommy and earl sweatshirt

idk i'm probably guilty of it too and not necessarily mad at the results i'm just saying

based grandpa (noz), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:56 (five years ago) link

like i just typed soccer mommy into youtube and the most popular result is a ski mask the slump god deep cut titled "soccer mom"

based grandpa (noz), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 07:59 (five years ago) link

funny most people riding 1975’s D but no lists have placed the best 1975 (not 1975) song, narcissist

||||||||, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 08:03 (five years ago) link

creepy eyeballs lol

I have no idea what people actually listen to anymore. I had a conversation with a 25 year old today who had no idea who the 1975 was, but who was familiar with Helena Hauff

Dan S, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 08:09 (five years ago) link

If you go clubbing enough in a big enough European city you're bound to have at least had the opportunity to have seen Helena Hauff at some point. She's definitely an artist that exists in social spaces rather than just a niche internet thing.

It's impossible to imagine any British person who doesn't attend holiday camp festivals voluntarily choosing to listen to an artist called 'Soccer Mommy' though. I mean Snail Mail was bad enough you guys.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 08:16 (five years ago) link

Pitchfork list is very boringly Pitchfork and virtually indistinguishable from all the others.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2018 08:21 (five years ago) link

I deeply felt the disconnect after 2017's EOY list season. Same as last year, I'm reading through these and I have no idea how anyone can use them for solid recommendations, which is supposed to be the whole point. Every list is just the same old boring shit.
