also, if pressed, i *might* argue that's the best verse on the best song on the best album of 2018, so *shrug*

also also ... i love "Mother" so much

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

No attack taken... (and I’m not usually even the type to get hung up on lyrix, so i dunno)

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link

Mother is a beautiful little song, the vocal melody reminds me of Rapture

Joaquin Oliver, an avowed Frank Ocean fan who loved Blonde so much he’d dyed his own hair to match, was only 17 when he was gunned down in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting this past February. The same day, Ocean released a cover of the melancholy “Moon River,” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was a coincidence;

xp I think that song (“Slow Burn”) feels like an accumulation of banalities that are supposed to strike the listener as little epiphanies, but it just doesn’t work for me personally... it’s no big deal.

(Like talking to someone who’s high when you’re not, and maybe that’s actually the idea, lol)

Textura's top picks for 2018

this is where I'm at with it -- there's this sense, it seems to me, that "In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down / But in Beijing, they're heading out to work" is supposed to elicit a #whoa #wow reaction, which it really doesn't. it's still a pleasant song! it's just strange to rally around, being so unassuming. the unassumingness is what's good about it, too.

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

xxp definitely no big deal :)

and let's be honest, the primary reason to love Slow Burn is the vibe, the space, the *sound* ... I do love those lines (and all the lines) but there is no song in 2018 more worth living inside than Slow Burn

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

"born in a hurry, always late, haven't been early since '88" is a good opening long for a song called "slow burn"

popmatters list has a bunch of things i haven't heard of at all that sound interesting

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:53 (five years ago) link

xp to me **opening line, d'oh

I rate that Anne Garner #1 from the Textura list very highly.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

xp ?? is that the Peter Blegvad song? not sure where the reference is in this thread

lyrics were written to make no sense

dub pilates (rushomancy), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:09 (five years ago) link

popmatters list far less interesting than it looks

textura seems intriguing tho

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

As usual, Textura has zero overlap with any other publication’s list.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

Anne Garner sounding great so far.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

slow burn has great lyrics and i'm not sure what the criticism of the quoted lines is supposed to be ...?

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

so the earth is a globe,

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 10 December 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

well, if the sun's going down in Tennessee and the bars are closing in an hour where she is, then she's probably somewhere in Europe. Seems like a detail you might want to mention, Kacey!

President Keyes, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

she has acknowledged that it's a dubious timeline, and that her husband called her on it, but she didn't care.

speaking of which, her husband made a top 20-worthy album this year that i've seen on no lists at all.

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

xp Yep, that's pretty much it... plus, you don't usually "look at flowers" in the dark(?)

I haven't read her interview, funny it came up, all is cool, etc.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

If you can go fishin' in the dark you can look at flowers imo

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

i would think the funky timeline fits the concept ... 'slow burn ... ' the bar closes in two hours ... we hang out all night and then see the flowers ...

so is anyone contributing to Uproxx's list or

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 December 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

i want to contribute to a list but i don't want it to be hosted by a record label

i fancied trying to DIY it earlier this year but...

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

sorry, hosted by an outlet that is owned by a record label, is what i meant to write

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

"Slow Burn" sounds like Sufjan Stevens so the p4k list has credibility.

billstevejim, Monday, 10 December 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link

assuming it's in their list, i did not read it yet

if Sufjan Stevens covered "Carolina On My Mind" maybe

Kacey talks about those lyrics *very briefly* at the end of this:

despite all the handwringing about the lyric on "slow burn" the concept is kinda old hat for her.... what i love about the song is the way the instruments are introduced gradually at the beginning and then how the song is peeled open halfway thru by the backing vocals. maybe that meta aspect of it is not so subtle but i do think there's a certain cleverness there that draws a through line back to the core of her appeal pre-golden hour, but just puts a different twist on the idea of "clever"

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

wth is this

'British Turquoise Jeep' is about the closest thing I can think of it, although one of the nerdy background Jeep dudes who never got to make many songs.

always one of the best lists:

The Anne Garner album from Textura list is sounding like the best album of the year for me right now too.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 11 December 2018 05:06 (five years ago) link

Hammock sounds interesting too. I had never even heard of them before but their songs on spotify all have millions of plays which is weird for ambient/post rock, they have double the listeners than say, Stars of the Lid.

I love the DJ Healer - Nothing 2 Loose that has been featured on the GvB and Noisey lists

That seems like an overstatement .. id say cupcakke placing over cardi is surprising ... mitski over kacey disappointing
