yeah that didn't work at all. from my tldr post upthread:

el's solo episode (...) really points up how much the show otherwise relies on jumping from thing to thing. you get bored with a single plot like this because it's obvious how it's going to end. and yeah the Invisibles gang members were bad. her sis was cool but seemed way more interesting in the tease at the beginning of the season. turned out to be pretty one-dimensional(.) the stuff with el and her mother worked better. wish we'd gotten more of her and hopper talking through this experience at the end. "oh and i joined a murderous gang!" el is just less interesting when she's dealing with these other characters. it's in-character that she's reticent and blunt, but that doesn't always make for crackling dialogue scenes.

the one from last season where she goes to the Big City and joins the New Mutants was pretty lol

Oh yeah! I had totally forgotten that was even Stranger Things, in my mind it was one of the Marvel Netflix shows. Well I guess it was.

omg I was convinced that was an episode of Orphan Black from ages ago. Not this.

that was like the opposite of a bottle episode

four weeks pass...

Very good--wouldn't say great--for a season-and-a-half. You've got the dreadful seventh episode after that (sent me scurrying for reviews to confirm that it was as bad as I thought it was), and I don't know about the finale, either, which I watched tonight. The whole climactic fifteen minutes didn't seem much more credible than straight-to-video sci-fi from the '80s...which as always, I guess, was part of the point.

clemenza, Thursday, 10 January 2019 05:15 (five years ago) link

ep 7 def felt like a dry run for a spinoff show but yeah it was just...off. like, it seemed intentionally bad.

can't actually remember how S2 ended. but that Snow Ball scene in the end was pretty nice

frogbs, Thursday, 10 January 2019 14:35 (five years ago) link

I did like that, but then I like virtually every movie prom scene ever. And "Time After Time" was of course perfect. Were they ever cruel to Dustin at first, though.

The worst thing about that seventh episode--lots of competition--was Kali's crew. They were actually more laughably cartoonish than the infamous CHiPS punk episode.

I don’t want to come across as too negative--it’s solid for a season-and-a-half, strange and funny and knowing, provided you can either look past or revel in its unapologetically obvious (and numerous) points of reference. It just goes a little haywire towards the end, lapsing into (as horror/sci-fi films often do) a little metaphysical mumbo-jumbo.

I remember now that Romy and Michele's High School Reunion also makes perfect use of “Time After Time” during its prom scene. It’s probably impossible for “Time After Time” not to be perfect in any context.

Looks like there may be some metaphors at work in this one to balance the pop culture references. Great trailer, though, and novel use of the Who.

I'm in just for the Steve/Dustin antics and Eleven/Max bonding alone!

the die hard shot is a little much, but there's gonna be two or three moments like that every season i suspect

Intriguing--looks like there's a reference to that greatest of '80s movies, The Lady from Shanghai.

I look forward to season four's leap into the future when they replace the younger actors with John Ritter, Harry Anderson, etc.

imo it's like a half-letter-grade lower, or at most the difference between B+ and B-. but if you already thought season 1 was a B-, then that might make it beneath the point of recommending.

Season 2 has one disastrous episode (which you could probably skip altogether without losing much of anything in terms of following the narrative) and lots of mumbo-jumbo towards the end. Otherwise, it's pretty good most of the way.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 March 2019 22:50 (five years ago) link

All of my 10 year old niece's class have seen both series, over and again, and apparently the consensus is S2 is much, much stronger. I'd agree.

I had some worries about diminishing returns when they went back to the "Upside Down" well for S2, and those returns were indeed diminished. This fuller S3 trailer clears up any ambiguity about whether or not they're going to do the same shit a third time (surprise, they do!).

This should've been an anthology show. Fighting the same monster again and again only works if the monster is as cool as the Alien or whatever, not some bloody demon dogs and a weirdo gigantic spider.

Ppl so hungry for 80s Spielberg nostalgia they forgot this show was wildly mediocre from the beginning.

Never got into this myself, perhaps the show has some equivalent of Dick’s Picks I can wade through to see if there something there for me after all.
