the specific singles are definitely a surprise -- I think I voted for "No Tears Left to Cry"

12. JIMOTHY LACOSTE, “SUBWAY SYSTEM”

I was wondering when this would happen.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

oh that reminds me, the other big surprise is "5 Dollars" over "Girlfriend" or "Doesn't Matter"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

"sweetener" sucks. on the whole the list is pretty good though

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

“Snow Burn” gets a lotta love for a song with this “??” verse:

In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down
But in Beijing, they're heading out to work
You know the bar down the street don't close for an hour
We should take a walk and look at all the flowers

Is it evening? Late night? Daytime? Why does it seem to change with every line?

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

I like Doja Cat, but "Go To Town" is easily the better track, think it might have a good position on these lists if (a) it hadn't been overshadowed by the Mooo! video and (b) that whole "saying 'faggot' is fine" / "Doja Cat cancelled" thing.

Still do not get 'It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)', it doesn't grab me at all, may try again.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:35 (five years ago) link

great to see cupcakKe high on that p4k list

go to down def better than mooo

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:36 (five years ago) link

doja cat had zero traction critically pre-"mooo" so i doubt it's overshadowing any of her tracks in that sense

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

I like mooo and appreciate what it's done for her career, it's just that go to town is a banger

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

the pitchfork list doesn't reflect a reality i recognize esp at it pertains to pop, rap and R&b but that's been the case for several years now... it's a good year to pick a crazy no 1 tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

i am a little confused by snail mail so high on the p4k list, "pristine" just sounds like fairly generic indie rock to me while "heatwave" is at least pretty good generic indie rock

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

Also, snow doesn't burn.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

xp i think there's even an interview where she said that's what she was going for. great song

ufo, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:47 (five years ago) link

good thing it's called "Slow Burn" then

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:47 (five years ago) link

xpost lmao the Snow Expert Has Logged On

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link

lol autocorrect y’all

I just think her lyrics are generally weak

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link

i love the lyrics to "slow moon's rose"

dub pilates (rushomancy), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

her lyrics have an awkward ESL quality that I enjoy, esp in "High Horse." "Space Cowboy" is the one I'll likely end up throwing points to though

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 10 December 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

xp ?? is that the Peter Blegvad song? not sure where the reference is in this thread

sleeve, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:58 (five years ago) link

High Horse is not the best track on that album (it's decent, but surely not the best) but mostly it's not v representative, Slow Burn is

I believe there was something approximating board consensus that Love Is a Wild Thing is the best of the bunch

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

“Space Cowboy” is my favorite of the bunch; tho when I said that on the Kacey thread, I think literally 5 ppl. jumped in and said, “Nah, that song suxx!” — so, ??

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

Maybe I’m just not meant to be a Kacey Head

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

(Oh wait, it was “Velvet Elvis”)

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

Space Cowboy is my favorite too!

No Smockin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

"high horse" is pretty lame as the song off that ppl have galvanized around... every other song on the record is a classic tho

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

for the "outre" choice I would have expected "Oh, What a World"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link

this is not a personal attack on morrisp, but i'm so glad i'm the kind of listener who would never even notice this, much less care

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link

also, if pressed, i *might* argue that's the best verse on the best song on the best album of 2018, so *shrug*

also also ... i love "Mother" so much

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

No attack taken... (and I’m not usually even the type to get hung up on lyrix, so i dunno)

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link

Mother is a beautiful little song, the vocal melody reminds me of Rapture

niels, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:27 (five years ago) link

Joaquin Oliver, an avowed Frank Ocean fan who loved Blonde so much he’d dyed his own hair to match, was only 17 when he was gunned down in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting this past February. The same day, Ocean released a cover of the melancholy “Moon River,” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was a coincidence;

xp I think that song (“Slow Burn”) feels like an accumulation of banalities that are supposed to strike the listener as little epiphanies, but it just doesn’t work for me personally... it’s no big deal.

underqualified backing vocalist (morrisp), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

(Like talking to someone who’s high when you’re not, and maybe that’s actually the idea, lol)

this is where I'm at with it -- there's this sense, it seems to me, that "In Tennessee, the sun's goin' down / But in Beijing, they're heading out to work" is supposed to elicit a #whoa #wow reaction, which it really doesn't. it's still a pleasant song! it's just strange to rally around, being so unassuming. the unassumingness is what's good about it, too.

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Monday, 10 December 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

xxp definitely no big deal :)

and let's be honest, the primary reason to love Slow Burn is the vibe, the space, the *sound* ... I do love those lines (and all the lines) but there is no song in 2018 more worth living inside than Slow Burn

alpine static, Monday, 10 December 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

"born in a hurry, always late, haven't been early since '88" is a good opening long for a song called "slow burn"

I rate that Anne Garner #1 from the Textura list very highly.

lyrics were written to make no sense

popmatters list far less interesting than it looks

textura seems intriguing tho

imago, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

As usual, Textura has zero overlap with any other publication’s list.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

Anne Garner sounding great so far.

slow burn has great lyrics and i'm not sure what the criticism of the quoted lines is supposed to be ...?
