isn't the absence of the Aretha doc Amazing Grace an upset? even given their fickle whims?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 12:34 (five years ago) link

hoping the Coup make it in if only for the performance

no Mandy or Hereditary in the score shortlist is criminal

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 13:27 (five years ago) link

no best doc nomination for They Shall Not Grow Old ?
that is insane.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 13:58 (five years ago) link

That is one of the stronger fields of Foreign Language Films in a long time. Cold War, Burning, Roma and Shoplifters should all be nominated, hope The Guilty can get the final one.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:38 (five years ago) link

wait was Transit not Germany's submission? madness.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:41 (five years ago) link

of course they were powerless to resist Teen Choice Awards nominee Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

Transit didn't really have a chance for a nomination, though?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

Technically Poland should have nominated 'Mug' and Mexico should have nominated 'Museo', but... That's not how it works.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:04 (five years ago) link

Petzold was a previous submission for "Barbara" so it's not really an out-there choice

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

anyway none of this matters because it's Roma fever all the time forever for some goddamn reason

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:09 (five years ago) link

Maybe Transit isn’t eligible until next year?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:09 (five years ago) link

They submitted him before for a more populist work, and it didn't get nominated. While von Donnersmarck has won before. I get their reasoning, and it seems to have worked. Petzold will have to console himself with having made a freaking great film.

Also, Roman wins Best Film, Cold War wins Best Foreign Language?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

Nah, I'm sure it's still A Star is Born and Cuaron wins Best Director and Foreign Language.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:16 (five years ago) link

Yeah, the combination of Green Book and Vice underwhelming + the likelihood of Bohemian Rhapsody being in the BP line-up making A Star is Born look better in comparison = that dumb movie winning, marking the worst BP since, what, The Artist?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

Birdman, surely. It can't possibly be worse than Birdman?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link

Vice isn't playing widely yet -- the embargo lifted yesterday -- and it's just getting notices, so don't discount its box office. I forget that The Big Short made over a $100 million.

ASIB >>>>>>> The Artist >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Birdman

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

I can imagine GDT's evangelism getting Roma all the way tbh

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

i think "worst winner since The Shape of Water" is damning enough

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Crash

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

Yeah, what was I thinking. The Artist, Argo, Birdman, The Shape of Water and The King's Speech are all equally as awful as A Star is Born. Which, to be clear, is awful.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:46 (five years ago) link

They just gave it to a good movie so they've filled their quota for the decade

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:48 (five years ago) link

Moonlight is a once-ever-25-years kind of thing.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

The King's Speech and A Star is Born are C movies, mundanities. We have to be like Minos in Inferno, wrapping our tails around our bodies judging which circle in hell to cast these movies.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 17:53 (five years ago) link

Argo wasn't terribly offensive, by virtue of not trying to be terribly important, unlike most of the rest of those

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

the shape of water was good. burn the rest

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link

Argo made the CIA heroic and Ben Affleck into a Serious Director. That's important.

There were only 3 maybe 4 non-franchise hits this whole year. You better believe the Oscars are going to try to jam as many as possible in the top category.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 December 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

Bohemian and Crazy Rich Asians could complete their transformation into the People's Choice Awards.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a really good writer.

affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:58 (five years ago) link

yeah, that's true. Also a sherlock holmes nerd!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

This is true! My dad is also a Holmes fanatic and has gotten to hang with Kareem on several occasions as a result.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

my two or so glancing moments with Kareem have proven him to be friendly but (justifiably so!) not particularly interested in engaging unless you have something he wants to talk to you about. I can only imagine what the full weight of his considerable attention must be like and would be absolutely tickled to hear him go off on some arcane points about Doyle-iana. What did your dad think of his dinner with Lew?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link

Oh, this is a combination of all the things my dad loves: Sherlock Holmes ephemera and new material, plus rubbing shoulders with celebrities. Kareem has written a couple of his own Holmes novels, so he's in deep!

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

oh ulysses that reminds me i agree 100% about SKIN what a piece of shit. people laughed when i saw it too, just at such a ridiculous topper on an already unbelievably grim procession of shorts. So many walkouts during Detainment and Skin. i think the conceit of Skin would actually make a decent pulp horror movie in the same vein as Don't Breathe, but it was horrifying presented out of context and with no warning. and obviously as a comment on racism it is completely dysfunctional and stupid.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

Holy shit, Vallelonga co-wrote Deadfall? That movie is unhinged. Arguably Nic Cage's weirdest performance.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 19:46 (five years ago) link

In 1977 or 1978 my dad led me from the back of an airplane up to the front to meet Kareem. My dad likes to recall that the chapter in the book he had open in his lap was "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar"

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

flappy otm
detainment MIGHT have been worse but only because it was longer.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

Kareem was reading a book while piloting the plane? Yikes.

so is the problem what green book reveals about certain americans or what it does to them? if the former, well it's not like we didn't know any of this. if the latter, my sense is that films play a teeny tiny if any causal role in actually perpetuating any of this stuff.

― affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy)

the latter, and my sense is different! i think we are affected by the perspectives we are exposed to, more than we like to acknowledge.
