spent waaay too much time playing the Spirits mode last night. only unlocked maybe 8-10 characters, but I guess i can grind Classic if I want to push it

I don’t have Isabelle yet but I quick matched against someone who did last night and she is wild. The fishing rod is crazy

I've never really played Smash, but I have a fully adult friend who wants to bring his Switch over and, well, smash.

folks, this game is good

some absolute hero has made a lavish instruction manual:

I kinda wanna get this, but explain me the appeal - is there more to it than streetfighter 2 button-mashing, with better graphics and characters? that's fine, but don't want to over-expect what i'm getting

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 10 December 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

i am a fighting-game agnostic at best but i've been v much enjoying it, not just as a fun game in its own right (which it def is, even in single-player) but an incredibly lavish celebration of a huge range of videogame history

never really got into this series, but curious about dipping back in with this one.

Smash Bros has always been waaaay more button mashy than Street Fighter btw, so be warned if that's a concern. xp

I am so bad at this game. Bf is maining Lucario and I'm faffing about trying to unlock Cloud so I don't feel so bad about losing constantly

there's nothing about SSB that makes this it inherently more of a button-masher. just like any other fighting game you can get away with playing like that against other people that are at that level, but there is a straightforward logic to how each character's set of moves suggests different combos and once you start figuring that out you'll be able to beat people that button mash.

the beautiful thing about SSB that makes it feel more elegant than most other fighters imo is that there is no memorization of commands involved at all, you don't input a string of button presses that then lock the character into an ability. every character responds to the same commands in ways that are fairly predictable, so once you have a feel for how to use each directional basic, special, smash, and air attack on one character you can then translate that into a rough approximation of how to use any other character (not very well, necessarily, but at least beyond button-mashing.) and the other great thing about the simple command system (of directional + A or B,) is that it allows players to quickly string together these abilities in infinitely complex ways, which involves developing an intuitive sense of how the abilities interact with the physics of the game, how far and in which direction an ability moves the enemy and how long it renders them unable to move so you can follow up the previous attack and stay on the offensive. getting a feel for that is really where the depth comes from, with characters flying further after they've taken more damage, and at different rates for different character weights.

yeah, that's v otm

smash bros is unlike street fighter, it created its own separate trunk of the fighting game tree at the very base

ciderpress, Monday, 10 December 2018 16:59 (five years ago) link

so much so that boring people argue to this day about whether it's a "real" fighting game

Smashed brothers are all alike; each unsmashed brother is unsmashed in its own way.

— RYAN RULZ OK (@ryanqnorth) December 10, 2018

Whenever you feel like smashing any brother, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t smashed the brothers you’ve smashed.

incineroar is potent, if hilariously slow. His classic mode is a breeze.

some of these world of light challenges seem to be saying "you don't have the right spirits yet" because they feel impossible.

*spirits or skills, I suppose. Some of the items in that tree are absurd.

yeah look at the power level of the fight in the top right, the 3 star ones are usually around 9000 which is way higher than you early on. you gotta level up/collect better spirits to make them more manageable

ciderpress, Monday, 10 December 2018 21:23 (five years ago) link

this feels a bit like that subzero game MK tried but without the amazing cutscenes

need qui gon jinn in the fighters pass

I wish I could print out that awesome fan-made manual, but 45 color against background blocks of black pages seems like trouble.

how are you all feeling about the online play? like, just the quality of the match, lag?

i haven't played smash since n64, but i'm wary because after reading bennett foddy's thoughts on lag:

https://www.polygon.com/2014/3/11/5491146/why-you-dont-want-an-online-mode-towerfall

Karl Malone, Thursday, 13 December 2018 23:27 (five years ago) link

It’s laggy and kind of all over the place. Nintendo didn’t do a network test for this so it’s likely improvements will come. I haven’t gotten/tried an Ethernet adapter yet, but I might. I haven’t played much online but maybe I’ll make an ilxor arena sometime over the weekend and post about it but I’d want someone to commit in advance to hang out there w me because it’s no fun just sitting there waiting for someone to join a lobby

it's like any other fighting game in that it's as good as the worst internet connection in the game. the only difference here is that it's on a system that most people use on wifi so the average connection quality is worse, and you may be playing with 4 players instead of 2

ciderpress, Friday, 14 December 2018 01:39 (five years ago) link

OK, first family match done! I won, a lot, but not all the time, surely due to playing with the stupid joycon vs. my favored Pro, but also not really knowing what anything does. Tons of fun, of course.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 December 2018 02:24 (five years ago) link

should i get this game

gbx, Monday, 24 December 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

have u played a smash before

do u have “ friends “

there are no good podcasts (||||||||), Monday, 24 December 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link

yeah if you like Super Smash Bros., this is the best version on Nintendo's best console, and you should get it. If you have friends, this is not the most accessible thing to do with your friends on Switch (that's Mario Kart), but it's more accessible than a "real" fighting game.
